  • Lysozyme-dextran hybrids were prepared by incubated storage at $60^{\circ}C$ and 80% relative humidity for 16 days. The emulsifying properties of the hybrids were about 14 times higher than those of native lysozyme and were about 3 times higher than those of commercial emulsifiers. Lytic activity of the hybrids remained about 83% that of native lysozyme when mesured against Micrococcus lysodeikticus as a substrate. The excellent emulsifying properties of the hybrids were maintained even at pH 3 and were further improved at pH 10. The emulsifying properties of the hybrids were greatly improved by preheating the hybrids at $100^{\circ}C$. In addition the lysozyme-dextran hybrids showed an antimicrobial effect on Gram-negative bacteria.

  • Boil-off loss ratio is one of the most important economic traits to be considered during the course of silkworm breeding. The boil-off loss ratio varies among the breeds and seasons. The present study was undertaken with 5 oval and 5 peanut breeds and twenty five hybrids involving these parents to select the promising hybrids with desired boil-off loss ratio. Accordingly, studies were undertaken to estimate the heterosis and heterobeltiosis. It was observed that majority of the hybrids revealed negative heterosis for boil-off loss ratio which is desirable. Based on the heterosis and heterobeltiosis, among all the hybrids, the hybrid APBRO5 ${\times}$ APBRD5 exhibited highest negative heterosis for boil-off loss ratio and also exhibited highest EI value (64.5) for the quantitative and qualitative traits. Based on the hybrids performance, boil-off loss ratio, heterosis and heterobeltiosis and evaluation index, the hybrids viz. APBRO5 ${\times}$ APBRD5, APBRO1 ${\times}$ APBRD1 and APBRO3 ${\times}$ APBRD4 were identified for commercial exploitation.

  • The use of commercial silkworm hybrids resistant to important silkworm diseases is economical and better option particularly in tropical areas. This necessitated the evolution of productive bivoltine silkworm breeds non-susceptible to $BmDNV_1$. Non-susceptibility to $BmDNV_1$, infection was found to be controlled by a single recessive gene, nsd-l or a dominant gene, Nid-l. A major dominant/recessive gene confers resistance to $BmDNV_1$, from potent donor parents have been transferred to 10 productive but susceptible bivoltine silkworm strains through conventional breeding methods. By utilizing these breeds prepared 25 hybrids $(5{\times}5)$ and hybrid evaluation was carried out to identify most promising hybrids resistant to $BmDNV_1$. All these hybrids are inoculated with $BmDNV_1$ inoculum along with productive control hybrid $CSR2{\times}CSR4$ and reared under standard rearing procedure. Based on inoculated rearing and test reeling results, two most promising hybrids $(CSR18DR{\times}CSR29DR\;and\;CSR21DR{\times}CSR50DR)$ were selected for commercial exploitation. The selected hybrids have shown a survival rate of >85% with productive traits, where as control hybrid have shown 11.1% survival with inferior cocoon traits. The methodologies adopted were discussed.

  • An experiment was initiated to evaluate hybrid vigour in twelve F$_1$ hybrids and seven three-way crosses of multivoltine ${\times}$ bivoltine silkworm between newly evolved multivoltine breed BL67 with productive bivoltine CSR breeds and hybrids. Analysis of variances computed for different characters among F$_1$hybrids and three-way crosses showed highly significant differences among them indicating presence of both additive and non-additive gene actions for the expression of these characters. Among twelve F$_1$ hybrids, two F$_1$ hybrids viz., BL67${\times}$CSR$_4$and BL67${\times}$CSR$_{5}$ have expressed significant heterosis for nine characters and two hybrids viz., BL67${\times}$NB$_4$D$_2$and PM${\times}$NB$_4$D$_2$ for eight characters whereas out of nine three-way crosses, three hybrids viz., BL67${\times}$ (CSR$_3$${\times}$CSR$_{6}$), BL67${\times}$(CSR$_{16}$${\times}$CRS$_{17}$) and BL67${\times}$(CSR$_{18}$ ${\times}$CSR$_{19}$) expressed significant heterosis for eight characters. In the present study, it is observed that the cocoons of two hybrids viz., BL67${\times}$CSR$_4$and BL67${\times}$CSR$_{19}$ were found to be uniform as these hybrids showed lowest CV% (5.35 and 5.38) among twelve F$_1$ hybrids and seven three way crosses between multivoltine ${\times}$ bivoltine hybrids. Four F$_1$ hybrids viz., BL67${\times}$CSR$_4$, BL67${\times}$CSR$_{5}$, BL67${\times}$ (CSR$_3$${\times}$CSR$_{6}$), BL67${\times}$(CSR$_{16}$${\times}$CRS$_{17}$) and BL67${\times}$(CSR$_{18}$ ${\times}$CSR$_{19}$) showed superiority in expressing hybrid vigour and are considered as best heterotic hybrids for commercial exploitation.ion.ation.ion.ation.ion.

  • This experiment was carried out to compare the agronomic characteristics, forage yield and quality of sorghum ${\times}$ sudangrass hybrid at two locations (Sungju and Cheonan) in 2009. The experiment was a randomized complete block design with three replications. The eight recommended hybrids used in this experiment were 'Sordan 79', 'SX17', 'Honey chew', 'Honey grazer', 'G7', 'Jumbo', 'Green star' and 'GT56' hybrids. The heading of four hybrids were headed at both region, Sungju and Cheonan. There are no big differences in general agronomic characteristics among hybrids, but brix scale of heading and BMR (brown mid rib) types were higher than those of other hybrids. Dry matter (DM) and plant height of heading type hybrids were higher than those of headless types. The fresh, DM and TDN (total digestible nutrients) yields of heading type hybrids were also higher than those of headless types, and BMR types were lower than others. The crude protein and crude ash contents of headless hybrids were higher than those of heading hybrids, while its non-fiber carbohydrate (NFC) content showed the opposite results. The acid detergent fiber (ADF) and NFC contents of BMR types were lower than others. The results of this experiment indicates that heading hybrids were more higher than headless hybrids in the agronomics and forage yield of sorghum ${\times}$ sudangrass. However heading types were lower headless types in quality of sorghum ${\times}$ sudangrass. And BMR hybrids were also high quality of sorghum ${\times}$ sudangrass hybrid because of higher brix content and lower ADF content among tested hybrids.

  • Nanocomposites with polypropylene/clay/wood flour were prepared by melt blending and injection molding. Thermal, mechanical and morphological properties were characterized. The addition of ballmilled clay, compatibilizer and wood flour significantly improved the thermal stability of the hybrids. The tensile modulus and strength of most hybrids was highly increased with the increased loading of clay, maleated polypropylene (MAPP) and wood flour (WF), compared to the PP/WF hybrids. The tensile modulus and strength of most hybrids were highly increased with the increased loading of ballmilled clay, MAPP and wood flour, compared to the hybrids with PP/WF. The transmission electron microscopy (TEM) photomicrographs illustrated the intercalated and partially exfoliated structures of the hybrids with ballmilled clay, MAPP and wood flour.

  • This study was carried out to identify the characteristics of 37 corn hybrids, which composed with 18 yellow colored kernel, 9 purple colored kernel, 8 white colored kernel. Days to silking of three colored waxy corn hybrids ranged from 61 to 73 days after sowing as midium-late ecotype. Ear length of hybrids ranged from 10.3 to 22.7 cm, and among them a total 22 waxy corn hybrids including CNU038 showed over 20 cm in ear length. The fresh weight per ear ranged from 58 to 289 g as the 32.9% of large coefficient of variance. In there results, we found yellow colored waxy corn hybrids showed relatively longer in ear length and heavier in fresh weight per ear compare to other colored waxy corn hybrids. In correlation relationships, plant height, ear height, stem diameter, ear length and ear weight showed positive correlation between themselves, while tip filling ratio did negative correlation with silking stage, plant height, ear length, ear weight and kernel thickness. Also, 100 kernel weight did positive correlation between traits related to ear and kernel.

  • In this study, the embryonic development and hatchability of eggs fertilized by the reciprocal hybrids of kelp grouper (Epinephelus bruneus) and red-spotted grouper (E. akaara) were evaluated with the goal of establishing a novel hybrid with enhanced growth and viability during the farming period in the temperate waters of Korea. The fertilization rates were lower for hybrids than for maternal purebreds and were significantly higher in the red-spotted grouper ♀ × kelp grouper ♂ hybrid (RGKG, 89.61 ± 1.58%) than in the kelp grouper ♀ × red-spotted grouper ♂ hybrid (KGRG, 74.82 ± 4.23%, p < 0.05). Unlike the fertilization rates, the hatching rates of fertilized eggs were similar between hybrids and maternal purebreds and did not differ significantly between KGRG and RGKG (72.74 ± 3.60% vs. 75.23 ± 2.20%, respectively, p > 0.05). The embryonic development of the hybrids was similar to that of maternal purebreds; however, irregular cleavage and asymmetric blastoderm were noticeable in the developing eggs of KGRG hybrids. The deformity rates of newly hatched larvae were higher in hybrids than in maternal purebreds and were significantly higher in KGRG than in RGKG (17.47 ± 1.28% vs. 7.11 ± 0.54%, respectively, p < 0.05). These results demonstrate the potential to produce viable larvae from these two hybrids. Although the production efficiency of KGRG was lower than that of RGKG, the fertilization, hatching, and deformity rates make both hybrids useful for further comparative studies regarding economic aspects.

  • In the spring silkworm rearing period of year 1998, some nutritional aspects were studied in the Agricultural Research Station of the Komotini town in Greece, to investigate the feeding behaviour of some Bulgarian silkworm hybrids, suitable for spring rearing, during the fourth and fifth instal under the local climatic conditions. The silkworms were fed by locally cultivated Japanese Kinriu mulberry (Morus alba L.) variety leaves. Eight Bulgarian hybrids had been used, namely Vratza-53xVratza-52, Ukraine-20xVratza-53, Super 1xHessa 2, Merefa 2xVratza 35, as well as their reciprocal crosses. The studies showed out a remarkably higher feed intake and feed utilization by the hybrids Hessa 2xSuper-1, Merefa 2xVratza 35 and Vratza-52xVratza-53. The same hybrids showed an efficient food utilization by means of daily growths cocoon shell ratio and raw silk output. In terms of food to silk conversion efficiency Hessa 2xSuper-1 hybrid gave the best results. Larval stage duration for fourth and fifth instar was not affected by feed intake and utilization. All hybrids showed a good adaptation to the local environment and their feeding performance was equal to the international existing standards. All calculated parameters were found to be around the mean values of other up to date presented results and thus considered as acceptable for the needs of the local production.
