  • Numerical analysis of vertical solidification process allowing solid-liquid density change is performed by a hybrid method between a winite volume method (FVM) and a finite element method (FEM). The investigation focuses on the influence of solid-liquid density change and cooling rates on the motion of solid-liquid interface, solidified mass fraction, temperatures and thermal stresses in the solid region. Due to the density change of pure aluminium, solid-liquid interface moves more slowly but the solidified mass fraction is larger. The cooling rate of the wall is shown to have a significant influence on the phase change heat transfer and thermal stresses, while the density change has a small influence on the motion of the interface, solidified mass fraction, temperature distributions and thermal stresses. As the cooling rate increases, the thermal stresses become higher at the early stage of a solidification process, but it has small influence on the final stresses as the steady state is reached.

  • The article presents the methodology for finding material damping capacity at higher frequency and at relatively lower amplitudes. The Lamb wave dispersion theory and loss less finite element model is used to find the damping capacity of composite materials. The research has been focused on high frequency applications materials. The method was implemented on carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) and glass fiber reinforced polymer (GFRP) plates. The Lamb waves were generated using ultrasonic pulse generator setup. The hybrid method has been explored in this article and the results have been compared with bandwidth methods available in the literature.

Boundary integral equation method is used to formulato the scattering process in the exterior of the scatterer and finite element method in the interior of the scatterer. And hybrid ray-mode method is used to provide the Green's function in the waveguide. The proposed algorithm is applied algarithm is applied to a sample problem with arbitrary scatterer in a waveguide. The results are compared with those of static analysis.

  • The paper presents an effective analytical method for SSI systems which can have separation or sliding at the soil-structure interface. The method is based on a hybrid approach which combines a linear SSI code KIESSI-2D in frequency domain with a commercial finite element package ANSYS to obtain nonlinear dynamic responses in time domain. The method is applied to a 2-D underground box structure which experiences separation and sliding at the soil-structure interface. Material nonlinearity of the concrete structure is also included in the analysis. Effects of the interface conditions are examined and some critical factors affecting the seismic performance of underground structures are identified.

  • To calculate the fluid-structure interaction(FSI) problem rationally, it should be the basic technology to analyse each domain of fluid and structure accurately. In this paper, a new FSI analysis algorithm was introduced using the 3D solid finite element for structural analysis and CFD code based on the HCIB method for viscous flow analysis. The fluid and structural domain were analysed successively and alternatively in time domain. The structural domain was analysed by the Newmark-b direct time integration scheme using the pressure field calculated by the CFD code. The results for example calculation were compared with other research and it was shown that those coincided each other. So we can conclude that the developed algorithm can be applied to the general FSI problems.

  • An efficient hybrid method is proposed to analyze discontinuities in a rectangular waveguide. Only with a small number of meshes around a discontinuity, the typical finite element method is shown to give an exact solution through several iterative updates of the boundary conditions. To show the validity of the proposed method, a simple circular aperture in a rectangular waveguide is analyzed and its result is compared with FEBIM.

  • This study investigates the vibro-acoustic characteristics of an automotive brake drum given free boundaries using the hybrid approach combining numerically obtained structural properties with analytical solution for acoustic radiation. Structural vibrations of the drum are investigated with the finite element method, and modal displacements on the outer surfaces of the drum are idealized as simple mathematical expressions. Based on the expressions, modal sound radiations of the drum are calculated using the Rayleigh integral method. Structural and acoustic responses of the drum for a harmonic excitation are obtained from above results using the modal expansion technique. The results are confirmed with numerical analyses using the boundary element method. Based on these results, it can be concluded that the vibro-acoustic characteristics of a brake drum can be accurately investigated with the process used in this study. Also, many noise and vibration problems in drum brake can be addressed using the procedure proposed in this study.

  • Offshore wind turbines are supported by various foundations, each with its considerations in design and construction. Gravity, monopile, and suction bucket foundations encounter geotechnical issues, while jacket and tripod foundations face fatigue problems. Considering this, a gravity foundation based on a steel skirt was developed, and a monopile foundation was analyzed for Pile-Soil Interaction using the p-y curve and 3D finite element method (3D FEM). In addition, for suction bucket foundations, the effects of lateral and vertical loads were analyzed using 3D FEM and centrifuge tests. Fatigue analysis for jacket and tripod foundations was conducted using a hotspot stress approach. Some hybrid foundations and shape optimization techniques that change the shape to complement the problems of each foundation described above were assessed. Hybrid foundations could increase lateral resistance compared to existing foundations because of the combined appendages, and optimization techniques could reduce costs by maximizing the efficiency of the structure or by reducing costs and weight. This paper presents the characteristics and research directions of the foundation through various studies on the foundation. In addition, the optimal design method is presented by explaining the problems of the foundation and suggesting ways to supplement them.

  • The frequency of lightning is increased due to improbable weather condition and global wanning. This phenomenon increases economical damage as well as human damage. Advanced countries like europe and north america have applied the facility standard of lightning by accumulating a store of quantitative data about lightning research. Lightning facility is composed of the lightning accepting part for induction lightning, ground connected electrode which conducts lightning current. The lightning accepting part is composed of normal rod, horizontal conductor, ESE lightning rod. Moreover, lightning accepting part is taken to use by the method of protection. This paper suggests HEC(Hybrid ESE-Conductor) method which mixes horizontal conductor and ESE lightning rod. This is also discovered by experiment that the starting point of corona discharge current is low, so it is efficient for lightning protection comparing with other methods. Moreover, distribution of electric field is analyzed qualitatively by finite element method. It also results in the relation of the starting point of corona discharge current. Corona discharge current makes minute current about some ${\mu}A$ between the electrodes by the strength of electric field. Also it occurs insulation destruction of gas, and it is developed to the shape of streamer by increase of the strength of electric field. We can find that the initial occurrence of streamer and contact probability of lightning can have advantage after researching the starting point of corona discharge current and discharge current of lightning striking point. This research demonstrates that the suggested HEC method is economically competitive as a lightning protection facility, and it takes a capably perfect role.
