The purpose of this study was to investigate effects of maladaptive personality (borderline personality, narcissistic personality, and dependent personality) and conflict behavior on marital adjustment(dyadic satisfaction, dyadic consensus, dyadic cohesion, and affectional expression) among married women. Subjects in this study were 725 married women who lived in Cheong-buk, in Gyeonggi province, Korea. Data were analyzed by the methods of frequency, percentage, Cronbach's ${\alpha}$, and factor analysis, Pearson's correlation, and hierarchical regression using SPSS-WIN version 12.0. The results of this study were as follows: 1) the less borderline personality was perceived, the more narcissistic personality was perceived, In addition, a greater perceived amount of destructive conflict behavior of wives was linked to highdyadic satisfaction in the wives'. Wives' destructive conflict- behavior was the most important parameter to predict dyadic satisfaction. 2) The less borderline personality was perceived, the less dependent personality was perceived, while the more narcissistic personality was perceived, the more destructive conflict behavior of husbands was perceived, with the, wives' incidence of dyadic consensus appearing high. Husbands' destructive conflict behavior was the most important parameter to predict a dyadic consensus. 3) The less borderline personality was perceived, the more narcissistic personality was perceived, In addition, more destructive conflict behavior of the husbands was linked to highdyadic cohesion in the wives'. Husbands' destructive conflict behavior was the most important to predict dyadic cohesion relatively. 4) The more destructive conflict behavior of wives was perceived, the higher the wives' affectional expression appeared. The wives' destructive conflict behavior was the most important parameter to predict affectional expression.
This study examined the intergenerational transmission of family violence. The main focus of this study was on the effect of an experience of childhood violence and the witnessing of interparental violence on the future spouse and child violence. Two hundred and forty-two married couples and 50 married couples with indicted husbands and their wives were surveyed. The results showed that Husbands who had experienced childhood violence from their father and witnessed their father's violence towards their mother tended to inflict more physical violence on their wives than those who did not experience such events. Wives who witnessed violence between both parents' tended to receive more physical violence from their husbands than those who did not witness such events. In addition, wives who did not experience childhood violence but at the same time witnessed interparental violence tended to receive more physical violence from their husbands than those who did not witness such events. Husbands who experienced childhood violence from their mother and both parents and husbands who witnessed their father's violence toward their mother tended to be more violent towards their children than those who did not experience such events. Wives who experienced childhood violence from their mother and father and wives who witnessed violence between both parents tended to be more violent towards their children than those who did not experience such events. These results partially support that the transmission of family violence across generations and show the differential effects of gender and the violent parent's gender on family violence.
Pregnant women need to be supported by their husbands and other family members. But little is known about the factors that contribute to perceived support in pregnant women. So this study is designed to identify the factors contributing to perceived support in pregnant women. The subjects for this study were 19 women who had had vaginal deliveries and 11 who had had cesarean sections in one hospital affiliated with a university. Data were collected during July and August 1992 through interview which lasted 20~30 minutes and used open ended questions. Each woman was interviewed once about their pregnancy experience. The data were analyzed by Van Kaam’s phenomenological analysis method and categorized accord-ing to similarity of content. Results of this study are as follows. 1) Mothers felt physically supported by having help with their activities from their husbands or other family members. Psychological stress was relieved by not having to worry about and / or giving a birth to a baby boy ; getting special attention : and hearing encouraging words. 2) Mothers felt not supported when indifference was shown by her husband and / or relatives ; when forced to do an unusual household activities ; or on hearing words stressing her responsibilities. Suggestion for further study are as follows. It is necessary to see if or not the contents of an educational program would increase the perceived support of pregnant women. This could be done by carrying out an experimental research project.
The purpose of the research is to explore the main cause and effect of successful marriage that Korean husbands, who are multicultural families had. To do the research, the experiment has been done with 7 husbands for 2 months. The 7 husbands took depths interview and analyzed the result by grounded theory approach. As a result, the husband experienced 'repentance of marriage' because of 'unready marriage', but 'Raising children', 'Helping housework' and 'recognition from friends and colleague' have affected the husbands to have a successful marriage adaptation. Based on the result, a political and practical proposal has been proposed to the Korean husbands who are multi-cultural family. Here are the examples of the proposal. As a social welfare policy, 'obligation of information offering for prospective spouse', 'following the Labor Standards and parental leave', 'expansion of visiting supervise system' and 'making guidance for husbands and distribute map of Immigration Office, Multicultural Family Support Center and Community Center' have proposed. And as an alternative plan for a practical social welfare policy and continuous social awareness improvement, 'various education program', 'a program with domestic married couple', 'a program with parents-in-law', 'a specific program to increase the housework participation for husbands' and necessity of development and practice of group program for husband have been emphasized.
This study examines the experiences of 17 ex-offenders' wives who received housing support by the Korea Rehabilitation Agency using Strauss and Corbin's grounded theory. In open coding, 143 concepts, 43 subcategories, and 16 categories emerged from the data. In axial coding, the causal condition were 'ambivalence of wives who encounter the husbands' release from prison', 'anxiety about the husbands' release from prison and recidivism', and 'trials and tribulations of everyday life after husbands' release from prison'. Central phenomenon was 'precarious livelihood by concealment of imprisonment'. Strategies were 'compromise with reality' and 'support husbands to reentry to the society'. Consequence was 'thanks to life via adversity' and 'the road less traveled.' In process analysis, main theme was 'process towards family resiliency after get over the stigma and family conflicts', and five phases were derived from the data and in selective coding. Based upon the research outcomes, psychological experiences of ex-offenders' wives and the needs for ex-offenders' families resiliency was discussed.
This study examined the retirement adaptation process for middle-aged and elderly couples. Twelve couples who had experienced retirement were recruited by theoretical sampling. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and analyzed through the grounded theory approach of Strauss and Corbin (1998). This study showed the results of 124 concepts, 41 sub-categories and 17 categories indicated through an open coding process. As a paradigm in axial coding, the causal conditions in the adjustment procedures of elderly couples whose spouses are retired were 'retirement preparation,' 'retirement acceptance,' and 'marital satisfaction.' A central phenomenon was 'crisis and conflicts of twilight couples.' The contextual conditions that correspond to this phenomenon were 'psychological separation from adult children,' 'division of household labor,' and 'economic status.' The action/interaction strategies to control the phenomenon were 'recognition of marital relationships,' 'conflicts coping,' 'resolution methods,' and 'self-reflection.' The intervening conditions that facilitate action/interaction strategies were 'attitudes of husbands,' 'mutual awareness of couple,' 'health status,' and 'support systems.' The consequences were 'readaptation of marital relationships,' and 'unresolved conflicts,' and 'trying alone.' This research classified middle-aged and elderly couples' adaptation into three types such as mutual effort, separation & resignation, and conflicts vestige. The findings provide basic information to develop a retirement adaptation program for the middle-aged and elderly.
This study examined the possible causes of nutritional inadequacy in Vietnamese immigrant women married to Korean husbands. Qualitative in-depth interviews were conducted with a sample of 34 Vietnamese marriage immigrant women and 17 Korean spouses participating in or having experienced Nutrition Plus from four Community Health Centers in Seoul, Korea. The study results showed that the nutritional staus of the Vietnamese marriage immigrant women was affected by the unfamiliar Korean food (cultural factor), low household income (economical factor), difficulty in purchasing Vietnamese food (environmental factor), and low accessibility to nutrition support systems (social factor). The Korean husbands' nutritional status was affected by the unfamiliar Vietnamese food (cultural factor), low household income (economic factor), and irregular working conditions (social factors). Nutritional interventions as a public service to the community needs to be developed and applied. Suggestions are presented regarding the future efforts to better understand and meet the nutrition needs of intermarried couples to respond to their heterogeneous needs and deliver adequate nutrition service to ever increasing intermarried families.
Purpose: This study examined the life experiences of the wives of men who were born with normal vision but gradually developed a visual impairment, with particular focus on their way of facing and coping with their life crisis. Method: A narrative approach was used to not only understand women's experiences within sociocultural contexts, but also reveal the subjective meaning of their personal life stories through their own voices. A purposive sample of three participants having husbands unexpectedly diagnosed with visual impairment during their marriage was recruited. The data were analyzed using the narrative analysis methods suggested by Clandinin and Connelly. Results: The wives took the crisis of their husbands' visual impairment as an economic crisis of the family. They faced a variety of difficulties, including extreme despair, role changes, and economic burdens. On the other hand, they tried to keep the family secure through a range of coping strategies that were motivated by compassion toward the husbands, maternal affection for the children, and a sense of responsibility for their families. Conclusion: This study revealed the need for financial support for temporarily disadvantaged families. In addition, various nursing and counseling programs for the family members will also be needed to help recover the family functions.
Rheumatoid arthritis as one of the chronic illness requiring management in long period of time puts great burden to patients, their family and society. For patients with chronic illnesses, providing a social support is important and the most important source comes from spouses. Therefore we assessed burden of husbands of female rheumatoid arthritic patients and also found out the factors affecting burden. The sample of study was 107 female rheumatoid arthritic patients and their spouses. The tool of assessing spouses' burden was the revised version of subjective and objective parameters developed by Montgomery et al.(1985). The results are as follows: 1. General characteristics of patients and spouses: The mean age of the patients was 48 years. Educational level of patients was high school 41.1%. The mean age of the spouses was 51years. Educational level of spouses was mostly high school(40.2%) and college(29.9%) graduate. The mean marital period was 23.4years. Average income per month was 1,609,000 won. The average duration since diagnosis was 9.4years. As a therapy, 67.3% chose standard drug therapy. Average rating of discomfort by patient was 3.05(range 1-5) and that of severity was 3.48 and that of dependency was 2.58. The husband's rating of their spouses disease severity was 3.68. 2. Husbands' burden: The average burden in subjective items was 21.61(range 6-36) and objective items was 35.24(range 10-60). The average of total burden was 56.59(range 16-96). 3. Husband's total burden correlated with patient's age, educational level of patients, therapy method, patient's level of discomfort, patient's severity, patient's level of dependence, husband's recognition of level of severity in statistical level. Husband's objective burden correlated with patient's age, educational level of patient, patient's level of discomfort, husband's recognition of level of severity. Husband's subjective burden correlated with patient's age, educational level of patients, therapy method, patient's severity, patient's level of dependence, husband's recognition of level of severity. 4. Linear correlation analysis on burden: The husbands' total burden is explained in 37 7% by husband's recognition of level of severity and husband's age. The husbands' objective burden is explained in 31.2% by patient's level of dependence, husband's age, husband's recognition of level of severity. The husbands' subjective burden is explained in 26.7% by husband's recognition of level of severity and patient's age. In conclusion, husbands' level of burden is affected by many factors and therefore nursing strategy for relieving burden of middle aged husbands should be individualized taking these factors into consideration.
This study was conducted to compare the emotional state between the mothers with low-birth-weights and mothers with normal infants, and to analyze the effects of home visiting for the low-birth-weights in one city. Data were collected from 51 mothers with low-birth-weights and 90 mothers with normal infants to compare emotional state, and from 26 mothers with low-birth weights to evaluate the effect of home visiting care. Summaries of results were as follows; 1. In mothers with low-birth-weights, social support form others was significantly lower than those of mothers with normal infants. Although the differences were not significant, mothers with low-birth-weights have more stress and child rearing burden, and less maternal self-esteem than those of mothers with normal infants. 2. Mothers with low-birth-weights, the more burden, postpartum depression, and the less husbands' support they felt. When they had lower maternal self-esteem and lower husbands' support, child rearing burden was higher. Also there was significant negative correlation between maternal self-esteem and postpartum depression. 3. In mothers with low-birth-weights, the score of post-intervention stress, care-giving burden, and postpartum depression were somewhat decreased, and maternal self-esteem was increased than pre-intervention data, although they were not statistically significant. 4. Mothers' satisfaction on the home-visiting care was considered to be high. In summary, mothers with low-birth-weights had lower social support even though they experienced more stress than mothers with normal infants. Therefore, public health nurse in community should pay more attention to them.
