  • Ascorbic acid is very well known as one of various ntioxidants and is used very popular in man. Melatonin. an endogenous compound secreted by the pineal gland in human brain has been reported to act as an antioxidant nowadays. The present study was performed to obtain the differences of the radioprotective function of ascorbic acid and combination with melatonin according to the administration dose a day on radiation induced DNA damage in mouse spleen and blood. • We surveyed the coastal structure damage created by typhoon ‘Maemi’, which heavily struck the Korean peninsula on September 12, 2003. The survey revealed that high tides and strong winds induced by the typhoon were the main causes of the coastal damage, especially in the Busan areas. Though some experimental real-time coastal monitoring stations captured the typhoon movements at the critical time, more systematic and complete system should be implemented to save human lives and property from huge typhoon disasters.

  • In this work, the effects of surfactant and solvents, such as benzyl alcohol and n-propyl alcohol, on the human hair dyeing with acid dye was investigated including the amount of dyes in hair according to dyeing time, temperature, and pH. And the damage of dyed hair was assessed by water retention, protein release, and SEM images of the dyed hairs. By adding benzyl alcohol in acid dyeing, the dyeing rate was increased and the dyeing equilibrium was established at early stage. The water retention of the dyed hair was increased and the protein release of the dyed hair was decreased. Therefore the hair was damaged less during the dyeing.

  • Objective : In this paper, we investigated the anti-oxidative capacities and protective effects of water extract of palmul-tang (PMT) against Ultraviolet B(UVB)-induced oxidative damage in human keratinocytes(HaCaT). Method : To evaluate the anti-oxidative activities of PMT, we measured scavenging activities on 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl(DPPH) radical, hydroxyl radical, hydrogen peroxide, superoxide anion, lipid peroxidation and reducing power of PMT. To give an oxidative stress to HaCaT cells, UVB was irradiated with $40mJ/cm^2$ to HaCaT cells. To detect the protective effects of PMT against UVB, we measured cell viability, apoptotic bodies and reactive oxygen species(ROS) generation. Results : PMT showed the anti-oxidative activities by scavenging DPPH radical, hydroxyl radical, hydrogen peroxide, superoxide anion, lipid peroxidation. Also PMT showed high reducing values. The UVB-induced oxidative conditions led to the cell apoptosis. However, treatment with PMT reduced oxidative stress conditions, including inhibition of cell apoptosis and expression of ROS. Conclusion : PMT had anti-oxidative activities and exhibited protective effects against UVB on HaCaT cells. PMT would be useful for the development of cosmetics treating UVB-induced skin aging.

  • As buildings have been constructed higher and more complicated recently, the activities of the residents occurred in those multiplex buildings have also become more various. As a result, possibility and the size of the damage from the disaster like a fire are getting larger. So, many studies for preventing the damage in refuge situation are being conducted. In this study, a new process for finding the optimum refuge path is presented, which is different from existing methods. This new method operates by using the human movement detection system in the building for real time. And the process also shows the new way which can shorten the number of calculation for deciding the optimum refuge path. That new way is to make variables such as the velocity of smoke and person movement into a constant. Finally it will be applied to a multiplex building.
