This study gives an account of the state of baby-boomer households in regard to assets and liabilities utilizing the 2006 Household Asset Survey and the 2011 Survey of Household Finances. Using the data gathered from each year, this study examined the proportion of households who had each type of asset and liability, and the amount of them. This study also compared the amount of assets and liabilities of baby-boomer households with those of non baby-boomer households in 2006 and 2011 respectively. Finally, this study examined the amount of change and composition ratio of assets and liabilities of baby-boomer households between 2006 and 2011. Selected financial ratios were also presented for both years. Major findings are as follows. The average asset amount for baby-boomer households was approximately 296 million in 2006 and 392 million in 2011. Of total assets, 78% and 76.5% were real assets in 2006 and 2011 respectively. The average financial assets of 2006 baby-boomer households were approximately 66 thousand and the average amount of debt was 42 thousand. For 2011 baby-boomer households, the average amount of financial assets was 92 thousand and the average amount of debt was 73 thousand. Results from the 2011 survey showed that baby-boomer households had a significantly higher proportion of total assets, total debt, and net worth than non baby-boomer households. The proportion of savings, saving insurance, stocks, and mutual funds were significantly higher for baby-boomer households than non baby-boomer households in 2011. In regard to financial ratios, the emergency fund index and debt burden index were appropriate to the guidelines of asset quality, although the propensity to investment indexes were not.
This study aimed to identify and compare variables affecting life satisfaction of older women by focusing on household types and poverty levels. The study used data from the Korea Longitudinal Study of Aging administered by the Korea Labor Institute in 2006. The data for 1,017 older women ages over 65 including 427 single households and 590 couple households was analyzed. First, interaction effects of household types and poverty levels on life satisfaction were statistically significant. For the non-poverty households of older women, there was no explicit difference between single households and couple households in life satisfaction, but for the poverty households, single households were lower in life satisfaction than couple households. Second, as a result of reviewing four groups of older women (poverty-single household, poverty-couple household, non-poverty-single household, and non-poverty-couple household), besides religion, it was found that there were significant differences in age, education level, number of children, health level, residence area, and status of economic activity. Third, when analyzing variables affecting life satisfaction, common predictors for the four groups were health level and ownership of house. Older women who perceived to be healthier and owned their own homes were higher in life satisfaction. For poverty-single households, older women with over middle school graduation were also higher in life satisfaction, but for poverty-couple households, older women with over middle school graduation and more children were higher.
This study explored low-income households' experiences and perception of home energy cost burdens and determinants of the perceived home energy cost burdens. Between March and July 2014, a questionnaire survey was administered in Cheongju, South Korea. Among the 434 useable responses collected, responses from 218 households with monthly income less than 2,500,000 Korean Won (KRW) were compared with those of 216 households with higher incomes. The main findings are as follows. In the past three years, more than 10 percent of low-income households had had their electricity cut off; 5.7 percent had had their city gas cut off. To pay for their home energy expenses, nearly 70 percent of the low-income households had had to limit their heating, cooling or spending for other necessities; 38.3 percent had to borrow money. Low-income households reported more problems paying for home energy than higher-income households did. Households with more negative evaluation of rainwater leak, no one staying at home all day, monthly income less than 1,500,000 KRW and householders in their 40s and 50s tended to perceive a heavier home energy cost burden. Finally, the most popular support programs were fuel assistance and discounts on energy bills.
The purpose of this study is to examine the factors affecting the housing satisfaction of elderly households in comparison with non-elderly households, and to present policy implications in terms of housing welfare policies. For this purpose, this study used ordered logit model analysis using '2019 Housing survey data'. As a result of the analysis, in the case of individual/housing characteristics, the analysis results of the non-elderly household model and the elderly household model were similar. However, in the case of regional characteristics, non-elderly households living in the metropolitan area showed higher housing satisfaction than non-elderly households living in the non-metropolitan area, whereas the elderly households living in the metropolitan area had lower housing satisfaction than the elderly households living in the non-metropolitan area. In addition, the satisfaction variable of neighborhood/environmental characteristics that had the greatest impact on the housing satisfaction of non-elderly households was found to be crime prevention status satisfaction, and the satisfaction variable of neighborhood/environmental characteristics that had the greatest impact on the housing satisfaction of elderly households was air pollution satisfaction. The results of the analysis can be used as various reference materials when establishing housing welfare policies for elderly households.

The purpose of this study is to examine the changes of housing characteristics between dwellings occupied by two and more households and one household occupying dwellings over 10 years using the Population and Housing Censuses in 1985, 1990, and 1995. One dwelling for each household, referred to the ratio of the number of dwellings to the number of households, has been one of the most important housing goals in Korea. The results indicated that the ratio of dwellings occupied by one household as well as that of households occupying one dwelling by oneself have been increased since 1985. However, the number of dwellings occupied by two and more households have been decreased but the number of households who share one dwelling with other households have never been decreased. One dwelling for each household has been mainly increased by the multifamily attached dwellers in urban residences. Single-family dettached dwellings in the urban area are the most often shared with other households. Housing policymakers should consider not only the rapidly increasing single households but also renters shared one dwelling with others mostly homeowners of single-family dettached dwellings.
