The turbulent flow field characteristics of a gun-type gas burner with and without a duct were investigated under the isothermal condition of non-combustion. Vectors and mean velocities were measured by hot-wire anemometer system with an X-type hot-wire probe in this paper. The turbulent flow field with a duct seems to cause a counter-clockwise recirculation flow from downstream to upstream due to the unbalance of static pressure between a main jet flow and a duct wall. Moreover, the recirculation flow seems to expand the main jet flow to the radial and to shorten it to the axial. Therefore, the turbulent flow field with a duct increases a radial momentum but decreases a axial momentum. As a result, an axial mean velocity component with a duct above the downstream range of about X/R=1.5 forms a smaller magnitude than that without a duct in the inner part of a burner, but it shows the opposite trend in the outer part.

Hot-wire anemometers are most commonly used in measuring hood capture velocities due to their accuracy and convenience. But it was questionable that the anemometers being used in the field are accurate enough for the purpose of measurements. To answer this ques tion, a calibration wind tunnel was newly devised and tested. Subsequently, 53 hot-wire anemometers being currently used in the field were tested to evaluate the accuracy of anemometers. The average error was 16.93% while the average errors in the low (0.5~5m/s) and high (5~20m/s) velocity range were 17.40% and 16.45%, respectively. Most of anemometers underestimated the true velocities. It might be due to the contamination of hot-wire, resulting in the slow heat transfer between the sensor and air flow. Astonishingly, 16 of 53 anemometers were out of order due to the malfunctioning of zero adjustment control, power supply, display panel and sensor. It is desirable to calibrate periodically and clean the sensor after using in the dirty environment.

After pure titanium Ingot(G2) with 400mm in diameter was manufactured, the analysis of its ingredients showed that the oxygen content was 0.073wt% and the iron content was 0.03wt%, which made ASTM Gr.2 standardization satisfactory. The processed titanium ingot produced 42mm wire rod, and hot rolling of 18th phase produced 9mm wire rod. The hardness analysis of 15.8mm wire rod, which was processed in hot rolling of 10th phase from the surface to the center, resulted in almost constant value with Hv150~200. The last 9mm wire rod had a different yield strength and elongation percentage depending on the temperature as it was led in to a hot roller. However, tensile strength revealed an approximate value and made ASTM B863 standardization satisfactory.

A modified technique of the transient hot wire method to measure the thermal conductivity of fluid has been described in this paper. The thermal conductivity of fluid can be obtained by acquiring wire temperature as a function of time. Multiplication of the inverse slope of the temperature versus logarithm of time by an instrumental constant gives the thermal conductivity. The constant voltage was applied to Wheatstone bridge circuit. The wire temperature can be measured as a function of time precisely with the aid of the data acquisition system composed of a microprocessor and an analog-digital converter. The thermal conductivity of the electrically conducting fluid has been measured with the insulated hot wire coated by electrically non-conducting material. The effect of the coated insulation layer on the thermal conductivity has been examined, in which it is confirmed that the thermal conductivity of electrically conducting liquid can be determined by the transient coated hot wire method. Thermal conductivities of methanol, carbontetrachrolide, Freon-22 and glycerin have been measured at room temperature in the pressure from 0.1MPa to 35.1MPa. The experiment has been performed to compare the data from the bare and the coated wires, and the results are satisfactory.
In this study, the experimental and numerical investigations of the ignition of methane-air mixtures by a electrically heated wire have been carried out. In order to define the initial condition and make the analysis simple, the following control unit was developed; which heats the wire to the setting temperature in a very short time, and maintains the wire temperature constant until ignition. Experiments with the feedback control have been performed using nickel and platinum wires in normal gravity and microgravity. From experimental results, ignition temperatures in normal gravity are higher than those in microgravity, however, the dependences of ignition temperature on equivalence ratio are not affected by natural convection. Numerical calculations, including catalytic reaction for platinum, have been performed to analyze the experimental results in microgravity. Numerical results show that reactants near platinum wire are consumed by catalytic reaction, therefore, the higher temperature is needed to ignite the mixture with platinum wire.

In this study, a new hot-wire anemometer which has greater sensitivity than that of a constant temperature anemometer (CTA) was proposed. In contrast to CTA, the wire working resistance of the new anemometer increases with flow velocity, that is, the operating mode of the wire becomes variable temperature. The variable temperature anemometer(VTA) was made by substituting a voltage controlled variable resistor such as photoconductive cell or transistor for one of the resistors in the bridge. By positively feeding back the bridge top signal to the input side of these electronic components, the wire overheat ratio could be increased with velocity automatically. Static response analyses of the VTA, constant voltage anemometer (CVA) and CTA were made in detail and calibration experiments were performed to validate the proposed operating principle. The wire operating resistance of the CVA decreases with velocity and this leads to lower sensitivity than that of a CTA. But the sensitivity of the newly proposed VTA is superior to that of a CTA, since the wire overheat ratio increases with velocity. Consequently, it is found that the major factor that is responsible for large sensitivity of a VTA is not the working resistance itself but the change of the wire working resistance with velocity.

A triple hot-wire probe has an essential potentiality for the measure- ment of an instantaneous velocity vector in a three dimensional unsteady flow with large amplitude of velocity fluctuations, the key problems asso- ciated with this instrument are the directional range of applicability and the accuracy. This present paper is concerned with a new method of the techniques of calibration and data processing to estimate the three dimensional flow field using an arbitrary shaped triple hot-wire probe. The method is not based on the assumptions of orthogonality or symmetry and it is especially useful for applications to a hand-made probe where probe geometry is not accurately known. The test application is made to evaluate the effect of cone angles of symmetric non-orthogonal probe.
Dynamic flow characteristics of a counter-flow vortex tube is investigated using hot-wire and piezoelectric transducer (PZT) measurements. The experimental study is conducted over a range of cold air outlet ratios (Y=0.3, 0.5, 0.7, and 1.0) and inlet pressure 0.15 MPa. Temperatures are measured at the cold air outlet and along the vortex tube wall. Hot-wire is located at cold outlet and PZT is installed at inner vortex tube by mounting at throttle valve. The cold outlet temperature results show that the swirl flow of vortex tube is not axisymmetric. The hot-wire and PZT results show that there exist two distinct kinds of frequency, low frequency periodic fluctuations and high frequency periodic fluctuations. It is found that the low frequency fluctuation is consistent with the Helmholtz frequency and the high frequency fluctuation is strongly related with precession oscillation.
Developing turbulent flows in a rotating 90 degree bend with square cross-section were measured by a hot-wire anemometer. The six orientation hot-wire technique was applied to measured the distributions of 3 mean velocities and 6 Reynolds stress components. Effects of Coriolis and centrifugal forces caused by the curvature and rotation of bend on the mean motion and turbulence structures were experimentally investigated Productive addition of Coriolis and centrifugal forces to the outward radial direction in the entrance region of bend increases the secondary flow intensity according to the rotational speeds. However, after 45 degree of bend, centrifugal force due to the rotation of bend may promote the break down of counter rotating vortex pair into multi-cellular pattern, thereby decreasing the production rate of turbulence energy and Reynolds stresses.

A method for measuring three-dimensional turbulent flows by the hot-wire anemometer is introduced. Mojolla's method using the X-type probe is adopted and modified for the slantwire probe without the linearizer. The probe is aligned with specified angles to the given uniform flow and the shear layer to verify the measuring errors due to the three-dimensionality and the turbulence level. Errors in the measurements of mean velocities and Reynolds stresses increase with the degree of three dimensionality in the flow. The incoming flow angle of 20 degree seems to be the limit of reasonable flow measurements. But there still appear large data scatterings in Reynolds shear stresses.
