Turbulent characteristics of turbulent pulsating flows were studied experimentally in a square duct. Velocity waveforms, velocity profiles, and turbulent intensity of turbulent pulsating flow were investigated by using a hot-wire anemometer with data acquisition and a processing system in a square duct with a ratio of 1 ($40mm{\times}40mm$) to 4,000mm long. Turbulent components were shown to be larger in decelerating than in accelerating regions and also larger for a large phase of velocity and U'rms distribution of turbulent flow. The effect of velocity amplitude ratio does not exist for specified time [${\theta}(z^{\prime})$], amplitude ratio (${\mid}U^{\prime}_{rms.os.1}{\mid}/{\mid}U_{m.os.1}{\mid}$), and phase difference (${\Delta}U^{\prime}_{rms.os.1}-{\Delta}U_{m.os.1}$) in either turbulent oscillating or cross-sectional mean velocity components. The effect of dimensionless angular frequency for specified time [${\theta}(z^{\prime})$] can be disregarded because the dimensionless angular frequency does not affect the specified time. The velocity distributions of turbulent pulsating flows for various time-averaged Reynolds numbers are in approximate agreement with the velocity distributions for equivalent Reynolds numbers and 1/7th power law of steady flow.
This paper considered the structural mechanism of transitional boundary layer by the experimental approach. In order to measure the turbulence quantity in the boundary layer, we made a wind tunnel with 400${\times}$190${\times}$2500 mm test section and a flat plate with well fabricated leading edge. Hot wire anemometer was used for acquiring the continuous turbulence signal which is processed by special software. The results of experiment show that the region where turbulence spot is dominant moves from near wall to overall layer and thus the anisotropy of velocity fluctuation shows so large value. Also the turbulence energy originally contained in low frequency band comes up to the high frequency band. Finally the turbulence model needs minimum two length scales to consider the pre-transition region.
In this research, dilute colloidal suspension alumina nanofluids were prepared by dispersing alumina nanoparticles in DI water and ethylene glycol as base fluids. Particle size analyzer and TEM test results revealed that the size of the alumina nanofluids(3wt% and 5wt%) with dispersion time 3hrs were 46nm and 60nm respectively. Thermal conductivity of these alumina nanofluids was measured by means of hot wire technique using a LAMBDA system. For water based alumina nanofluids, thermal conductivity enhancement was from 2.29% to 3.06% with 5wt% alumina at temperatures ranging from 15 to $40^{\circ}C$. Whereas in case of ethylene glycol based alumina nanofluids under the same temperature range, thermal conductivity enhancement was from 9.6% to 10% with 5wt% alumina. An enhancement of 37% average convective heat transfer was achieved with 5wt% alumina nanofluids at Re of 1,100.

Wastewoods (logging residues) generated in Korea were used to make lignocellulosic fillers for papermaking. Lignocellulosic fillers could play great roles to increase retention efficiency and thus decrease turbidity of white water in papermaking process. In addition, lignocellulosic fillers could be used to improve physical properties of paper through their high affinity to cellulosic fibers, leading to the less use of chemical additives like retention aids. Wastewoods including Pinus densiflora and Quercus variabilis were chemically and mechanically treated for making fine particles passing through 100 mesh wire. The newly generated fillers showed larger particle size distribution than ground calcium carbonates but similar distribution to talc. In particular, pretreatment by hot water was more effective to generate smaller particle size than by alkali treatment. Lignocellulosic particles mixed with ground calcium carbonates under intense hybridizing condition greatly contributed to surface coverage of organic fillers in addition to filling to lumen and pits.

The carbon laden suspensions in water with no surfactants have poor stability caused by the hydrophobic layer of particles. In this study, the water-based carbon nano colloide(CNC) was successfully produced using electro-chemical one-step method without agent. The properties of CNC were characterized by using various techniques such as particle size analyzer, TEM, FT-IR, turbidity meter, viscometer, and transient hot-wire method. The average size of the suspended in the CNC was 15 nm in diameter. The thermal conductivity of CNC compared with water was increased up to 14% with 4.2wt% concentration. The CNC was stable over 600hr. The enhanced colloidal stability of CNC may be caused by the chemical structures, such as, hydroxide and carboxyl groups formed in outer atomic layer of carbon, which (i) made the carbon nanofparticles hydrophilic and (ii) prevented the aggregation among nanoparticles.
It has been shown that a nanofluid consisting of nanoparticles dispersed in base fluid has much higher effective thermal conductivity than pure fluid. In this study, four kinds of nanofluids such as multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) in water, CuO in water, SiO2in water, and CuO in ethylene glycol, are produced. Their thermal conductivities are measured by a transient hot-wire method. The thermal conductivity of water-based MWCNT nanofluid is shown to be increased by up to 11.3% at a volume fraction of 0.01. The measured thermal conductivities of MWCNT nanofluids are higher than those calculated with Hamilton-Crosser's model due to neglecting solid-liquid interaction at the interface. The results show that the thermal conductivity enhancement of nanofluids depends on the thermal conductivities of both particles and the base fluid. Stability of nanofluids is estimated by UV-vis spectrum analysis. Stability of nanofluid depends on the type of base fluid and the suspended particles. Also it can be improved in addition of a surfactant.

The influence of unsteady wake on the flow and heat transfer characteristics in a four-vane linear cascade was experimentally investigated. The unsteady wake was generated with four rotating rectangular plates located upstream of the cascade. Tested inlet Reynolds number based on chord length was set to 66,000 by controlling free-stream velocity. A hot-wire anemometer system was employed to measure turbulent velocity components. For the convective heat transfer coefficients measurement on turbine blade surface, thermochromic liquid crystal and gold film Intrex were used. It was found that the unsteady wake enhances the turbulent motion in the cascade passage and accordingly promotes the development and transition of boundary layer. It was found that the heat transfer coefficients on the blade surface increase as the plate rotating speed increases. However, the increasing of heat transfer coefficients is not significant in the case that Strouhal number is higher than 0.503.

This paper presents an accelerated life test for burnout of tungsten filament of incandescent lamp. From failure analyses of field samples, it is shown that their root causes are local heating or hot spots in the filament caused by tungsten evaporation and wire sag. Finite element analysis is performed to evaluate the effect of vibration and impact for burnout, but any points of stress concentration or structural weakness are not found in the sample. To estimate the burnout life of lamp, an accelerated life test is planned by using quality function deployment and fractional factorial design, where voltage, vibration, and temperature are selected as accelerating variables. We assumed that Weibull lifetime distribution and a generalized linear model of life-stress relationship hold through goodness of fit test and test for common shape parameter of the distribution. Using accelerated life testing software, we estimated the common shape parameter of Weibull distribution, life-stress relationship, and accelerating factor.

Phase averaged velocity fields in the near wake region behind a square cylinder have been (successfully) obtained using randomly sampled PIV data sets. The Reynolds number based on the flow velocity and the vertex height was 3,900. To identify the phase information, we examined the magnitude of circulation and the center of peak vorticity. The center of vorticity was estimated from lowpass filtered vorticity contours (LES decomposition) adopting a sub-pixel searching algirithm. Due to the sinusoidal nature of firculation which is closely related to the instantaneous vorticity, the location of peak voticity fits well with a sine curve of the circulation magnitude. Conditionally-averaged velocity fields represent the barman vortex shedding phenomenon very well within 5 degrees phase uncertainty. The oscillating nature of the separated shear layer and the separation bubble at the top surface are clearly observed. With the hot-wire measurements of Strouhal frequency, we found thats the convection velocity changes its magnitude very rapidly from 25 to 75 percent of the free stream velocity along the streamwise direction when the flow passes by the recirculation region.

An experimental study is performed to investigate characteristics of near of wakes of circular cylinders with serrated fins using a hot-wire anemometer for various freestream velocities. The main focus of this paper is to investigate a reason why a vortex formation length is increased suddenly. Velocity of the fluid which flow through fins decreases as fin's height and freestream velocity increases and fin pitch decreases, and a thickness of boundary layer increases. The finned tube has a lower velocity gradient when the higher boundary layer grows. This velocity gradient on finned tube makes a weak shear force in the wake and moves to downstream in a state of lower momentum transfer between the freestream and the wake. The phenomenon makes a vortex formation length increased suddenly. The fluctuations of the velocity distributions on the finned tube and (equation omitted) = 1.0 contour line in the vortex formation region decreases when the fin height increases and the pitch decreases.
