Forward slip is an important parameter often used in rolling-speed control models for tandem hot strip rolling mills. In a hot strip mill, on-line measurement of strip speed is inherently very difficult. Therefore, for the set-up of the finishing mill, a forward slip model is used to calculate the strip speed from roll circumferential velocity at each mill stand. Due to its complexity, most previous researches have used semi-empirical methods in determining values for the forward slip. Although these investigations may be useful in process design and control, they do not have a theoretical basis. In the present study, a better forward slip model has been developed, which provides for a better set-up and more precise control of the mill. Factors such as neutral point, friction coefficient, width spread, shape of deformation zone in the roll bite are incorporated into the model. Implementation of the new forward slip model for the control of a 7-stand hot strip tandem rolling mill shows significant improvement in roll speed set-up accuracy.
In hot strip rolling, sound prediction of the temperature of the strip is vital for achieving the desired finishing mill draft temperature (FDT). In this paper, a precision on-line model for the prediction of temperature distributions along the thickness of the strip in the finishing mill is presented. The model consists of an analytic model for the prediction of temperature distributions in the inter-stand zone, and a semi-analytic model for the prediction of temperature distributions in the bite zone in which thermal boundary conditions as well as heat generation due to deformation are predicted by finite element-based, approximate models. The prediction accuracy of the proposed model is examined through comparison with predictions from a finite element process model.
A novel flatness sensing system which is called the Flatness Sensing Inter-stand Looper(FlatSIL) system is suggested and a self-tuning PI control system using the FlatSIL is designed for improving the flatness of hot strip in finishing mill processes. The FlatSIL system measures the tension along the direction of the strip width by using segmented rolls, and the tension profile is approximated through the tension of each segmented roll. The flatness control system is operated by using the tension profile. The proposed flatness control system as far as the tension profile-measuring device works for the full strip length during the strip rolling in finishing mills. The generalized minimum variance self-tuning (GMV S-T) PI control method is applied to control the flatness of hot strip which has a design parameter as weighting factor for updating the PI gains. Optimizing the design parameter in the GMV S-T PI controller, the Robbins-Monro algorithm is used. It is shown by the computer simulation and experiment that the proposed GMV S-T PI flatness control system has better performance than the fixed PI flatness control system.
In this study, in order to achieve the uniformity of mechanical properties and microstructures of a hot-rolled coil in the transversal direction, the edge mask device is newly device is newly developed and installed at the upper laminar-flow cooling head in the run out table, which controls the transversal temperature of strip with enco panel and bar edge heater. The device that is transversally movable prevents the temperature drop of strip edge by blocking the cooling water into the strip edge. So, the pattern of edge mask set-up condition of the device was derived by analyzing the characteristics of strip temperature and mechanical properties according to the on-line application of edge mask.
In this paper, we study design of a ILQ(Inverse Linear Quadratic optimal control) looper control system for hot strip mills. The looper which is placed between stands plays an important role in controlling strip width by regulating strip tension variation generated from the velocity difference of main work rolls. A Looper servo controller is designed by ILQ control theory which is an inverse problem of LQ(Linear Quadratic optimal control) control. The mathematical model for looper system is obtained by Taylor´s linearization of nonlinear differential equations. Then we designed linear controller for linearization model by using the ILQ control algorithm. Thereafter this controller is applied to the nonlinear model for model identification. As a result, we show the controller´s robustness for the model error, external disturbance and sensor noise.
This paper studies on the design of a looper control system for hot strip mill finisher using ILQ(Inverse Linear Quadratic optimal control) control method. The loopers are placed between each rolling stands and looper control plays an important role in regulating strip tension. The strip tension is controlled by raising and lowering the looper and by changing the speed of main work rolls. Firstly, it is shown from a nonlinear dynamic simulation that the strip tension is more influenced by difference of rolling speed than that of the looper angle. Secondly, a servo controller of the looper is designed using ILQ control method of which the characteristics and algorithms are simply introduced. Finally, the performances of the ILQ servo controller are compared with those of the LQI servo controller from computer simulation. In result, it is shown that the proposed ILQ servo controller has the better performances and robustness far parameter perturbations and disturbances than those of LQI controller.
In hot roiling process, new rolling mills have been apapted to strip rolling but we can usually experience the problem of snaking of strip. This phenomenon was arisen by nonsymmetric rolling and on-centering and cambering of a strip and other mill conditions. Three dimensional analysis for strip rolling predicted the influence of nonsymmetric rolling, off-centering and pair crossing system This study evaluated the fundamental characteristics of snaking of a strip to optimize the operating condition for trouble free rolling.
This paper proposes a cooling stop temperature control(CSTC) concept which aims at obtaining the uniform temperature and quality of the material along the longitudinal and lateral direction of the strip. The CSTC is designed using the experimental CCT(Continuous Cooling Transformation), TTT(Time Temperature Transformation) curves and the temperature control model by the heat transfer governing equation, and the temperature control simulator. The cooling pattern and the rolling speed can be solved by the CSTC. It is shown through the field test of the hot strip mill of POSCO that the phase transformation ratio of the high carbon steel is considerably improved by the proposed temperature control.
In recent years, the quality requirements from the customers of hot rolled steel strip have been steadily increasing in diversity and strictness. To meet these quality requirements as well as to improve productivity, steel mills have been doing their efforts for developing high performance Automatic Gauge Control (AGC) system. However, it is very time consuming and also needs a lot of money to develop the new technologies of AGC in actual mill. So, there has been a demand for developing the Dynamic Hot Rolling Simulator since late 80's. It is a kind of software packages and can analyze the dynamic behaviors of hot finishing rolling process without laborious experiments in actual mill. It can also be used as a designing tool of Automatic Gauge Controller. In this work, the Dynamic Hot Rolling Simulator which is applicable to 6 sands hot strip mill rolling was developed. The MATLAB with SIMLINK was used as a software developer for making the main part of simulator because it is very powerful tool for modeling, integrating, controller design, and simulation. In this paper, the structures and the mathematical models of the simulator were briefly described and the results of simulation on the transient phenomena of hot rolling process with actual mill data were also presented.
