  • The present surveys were conducted in attempts to investigate the health situation of horses in Korea through mass-screening the samples serologically, bacteriologically and clinically. A total of 575 horses were sampled randomly, comprising 126 from the Korean Horse Affairs Association, 288 from the Korean Equestrian Federation and 161 from the Jeju ponies. Each of the samples taken was tested for diagnoses of 18 horse diseases including African horse sickness. Summarised below are the results obtained from this surveys. 1. From results of the serological survey it is evident that Korea is currently free from African horse sickness, dourine, glanders, vesicular stomatits, equine piroplasmosis, equine viral arteritis, Venezuelan encephalomyelitis and contagious equine metritis. Constant vigilence with strengthened quarantine measures is thus vital for maintaining freedom of any those diseases in Korea. 2. No clinical case was observed with any of signs or symptoms of infectious lymphangitis, anthrax and infestations with ringworm, mange or scab. However, continuous follow-up is required for establishing the evidence of no occurrence of the diseases in Korea. 3. One case of seropositive to equine infectious anemia may fully justify systematic and regular testings for the whole population of horse in Korea. 4. It is manifested that equine rhinopneumonitis, Japanese encephalitis and Getah virus infection are well established in Korea, together with the presence of equine infectious abortion(Salmonella abortus equi). This strongly entails preventive precautions before entry into Korea for the horses participating in the 1986 Asian Games and the 1988 Seoul Olympics.

  • The joint disease including osteoarthris (OA) and rheumatoid arthritis (RA) are common in the horse. Many studies have been performed to develop biochemical markers reflecting the abnormalities of cartilage and synovial membrane. However, no specific, sensitive and clinically well established assay systems have been yet available to characterize the severity of joint diseases. Indeed, radiography is still doctor's best choice of assessing joint damage in OA/RA. This review focuses on biochemical molecules such as proteoglycan, collagen, matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs), lectin and cytokine to assess their potential value for not only predicting stage of joint disease but also monitoring treatment efficacy.

  • A 10-year-old Thoroughbred mare was referred to the Jeju National University Equine Hospital with roaring, dyspnea, and weight loss. On endoscopic examination, the horse was diagnosed with right arytenoid chondritis. Surgical treatment was selected due to the failure of a previous medical treatment. Permanent tracheostomy was performed in a standing position. The horse was restrained and tied in a proper position in the stock. The cranial parts of the 2nd to 5th tracheal cartilages were resected, as were the associated skin, mucosa, muscle, and cartilages. After the stoma was formed, external mucosa and skin were sutured using a simple interrupted method. The horse was hospitalized for 22 days receiving postoperative care including antibiotics, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, dressing as required, and was pregnant six months after the surgery. A permanent tracheostomy is thought to be effective in horses with diseases causing upper respiratory tract obstruction.

  • Objective: The ecosystem of an animal farm is composed of various elements, such as animals, farmers, plants, feed, soil, and microorganisms. A domesticated animal's health is largely connected with the reservoir of bacteria and viruses in animal farms. Although a few studies have focused on exploring the gut microbiome of animals, communities of microbiota and viruses in feedlots have not been thoroughly investigated. Methods: Here, we collected feces and dust samples (4 groups: cattle feces, C_F; horse feces, H_F; cattle dust, C_D; and horse dust, H_D) from cattle and horse farms sharing the same housing and investigated their microbiome/virome communities by Illumina sequencing. Results: Dust groups (C_D and H_D) showed higher microbial diversity than feces groups (C_F and H_F) regardless of animal species. From the microbial community analysis, all the samples from the four groups have major phyla such as Proteobacteria (min 37.1% to max 42.8%), Firmicutes (19.1% to 24.9%), Bacteroidetes (10.6% to 22.1%), and Actinobacteria (6.1% to 20.5%). The abundance of Streptococcus, which commonly recognized as equine pathogens, was significantly higher in the horse group (H_D and H_F). Over 99% among the classified virome reads were classified as Caudovirales, a group of tailed bacteriophages, in all four groups. Foot-and-mouth disease virus and equine adenovirus, which cause deadly diseases in cattle and horse, respectively, were not detected. Conclusion: Our results will provide baseline information to understand different gut and environmental microbial ecology between two livestock species.

  • Recently, domestic animal disease caused tremendous damage to farmhouses and the damage stretched in nationwide with the spread of epidemic disease. To prevent animal diseases from happening again, the system development to easily measure the temperature of sick animals and identify of them is needed, thereby quickly treat them, reducing losses of farmhouses. However, a lack of related equipment and human resource hampered its effort to minimize its losses. This study tries to develop diagnosis system as part of measures to curb these domestic animal diseases. This paper present the 센서 node based on IEEE 802.15.4 which can be attached to the animal body for real-time temperature measurement. We design and implement tiny chip-type that can be attached to the body of animals. Then, we use available power only when measuring temperatures in a long term-basis. In this paper, the 센서 node was applied to horse's neck. We measure the horse's body temperature between $32.2^{\circ}C{\sim}33.7^{\circ}C$ and analyze phenomenon data for 4 months.

  • An 11-year-old thoroughbred post-partum broodmare presented with the symptoms of colic. The physical and clinical examinations indicated a large colon displacement or volvulus. Immediate surgical intervention was performed, and a strangulating large colon volvulus (LCV) was defined as a volvulus of >540° in the counterclockwise direction. After correcting and assessing the gut viability, approximately 80% of the entire large colon was resected and anastomosed using an end-to-end technique. With supportive care after surgery, the horse regained its appetite and vitality without significant clinical complications and was discharged on postoperative day 9. This report presents the first surgical correction using a large colon resection and anastomosis (LCRA) and the critical care for a strangulating LCV in a horse in Korea. This case enhances the current knowledge of clinical LCV and the related considerations for treatment.

  • The COVID-19 pandemic continues to be a major health problem worldwide. Timely diagnosis of co-infections mimicking COVID-19, such as malaria, might be challenging particularly in non-endemic areas. We report the first case of COVID-19 and Plasmodium ovale malaria co-infection from our region aiming to highligt the importance of travel history and prophylaxis in malaria management in the context of pandemic. The galloping sound can sometimes be a harbinger of zebra besides the horse.
