  • This study discovers the dynamic nature of an interactional hierarchy as well as an institutional hierarchy in the use of Korean honorifics. Data was collected from the conversations of two Korean female interlocutors. The interlocutors met for the first time in the U.S. and often changed their use of honorifics. The paper examines the method in which the two interlocutors negotiate hierarchies during interaction and how the negotiation is reflected in their use of honorific shifts. The paper also investigates honorific shifts in terms of self-representation to suggest that there is another hierarchy at work other than the institutional hierarchy. An examination of the data shows that the shifts occurred not randomly but strategically. The findings suggest that 1) interlocutors may negotiate interactional hierarchy during their conversation, often in the same sentence, 2) interactional hierarchy often cross the boundary of the institutional hierarchy to obtain interactional goals, in this case, intimacy, and 3) the utterance contents may play a significant role in the interlocutors' honorific shifts.

  • The Russian language uses more words that imply collectivism than Western Indo-European languages. In Korean, the first-person plural pronouns are used more often than in Western languages. In this respect, Russian seems to stand closer to the latter, although typologically it belongs to the Indo-European family. The predominance of 'we' over 'I,' which took place in the history of the Russian language, had something to do with the Russian commune and the ecclesiastical and spiritual concept of 'sobornost' (equation omitted). A similarity between the Russian and the Korean nations lies in a collective way of life as compared to Western nations. The Russian concepts of (equation omitted) and (equation omitted) ('commune') have direct analogues in the Korean language. In all societies a commune involves a certain sense of collectivity, or spiritual unity of the people - 'sobornost' (equation omitted). Korean collectivity is more familial and moral in character, whereas Russian 'sobornost' is more spiritual. This has its direct reflection in Korean and Russian languages. One can say that a sort of a family version of Russian 'sobornost' takes place in Korean society.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine Korean young children's acquisition of honorific expressions. The participants of the present study were 297 young children (ages 3-5 years) from Kyunggi province. The results of the study showed that young children acquire honorific markers in the order of hearer-honorific expressions, subject-honorific expressions, and then object-honorific expressions. Five-year old children acquired at least 75% of the hearer-honorific expressions. The result can be explained by the fact that most of them were used in greetings. Even though more than 90% of five-year old children acquired the subject-honorific marker si, the acquisition rates of subjecthonorific nouns and subject-honorific verbs were less than 10%. Finally, the acquisition rates of objecthonorific expressions were less than 20%, with the exception of the object-honorific noun ce. The results of the study suggest that educational programs should be developed in order to facilitate the acquisition of honorific markers in young children.

  • Internalized Confucian cultural scripts trigger meta-pragmatic thinking in Korean communication. Commonly shared cultural knowledge acts as a powerful constraint upon the behavioral patterns of each participant and this knowledge can be strategically manipulated to avoid confrontations. The strategic use of address reference terms utilizes cultural values as a face-redress mechanism to achieve situation-specific goals. This paper offers a view of Korean address reference terms that rests on four revisions of politeness theory (Brown & Levinson, 1978, 1987). First, the notion of discernment - or 'wakimae' - as a culture-specific mechanism is reanalyzed. Secondly, culture-specific values as another R (ranking of imposition) variable are introduced. Thirdly, a reevaluation of the notion of positive face (respect) is discussed. Finally, the address reference terms in combination with other honorifics by the speaker that can be strategically applied either to threaten or to enhance the face of the hearer is observed. Because Confucianism is embedded in Korean cultural identity, teaching cultural values integrated and their roles in situation-dependent politeness is required in order to understand interactional nature of politeness occurring from particular discourse contexts.

  • The purpose of this study is to prove the students' understanding of audiovisual translation and the class effect by using the lesson plan that can efficiently teach the audiovisual translation class, which is one of the major elective courses at S University. After taking the course, a questionnaire was surveyed and the results were analyzed. The response and satisfaction with the content of the class was positive and very high, and it was confirmed that the background knowledge of the movie was especially helpful for translation practice. The effect of the class was focused on translating subtitles, and only the abbreviated part of the response to the questionnaire was expressed in a table, and the rest was expressed descriptively. Specifically, the response rate for abbreviations, pronouns, titles suitable for personal relationships, putting subjects and predicates close together were the most positive, followed by natural expressions, sign writing, handling of honorifics and informal words, attaching subject and predicates closer, translating them in reverse, and converting units.

  • Conversational AI which allows users to interact with satisfaction is a long-standing research topic. To develop conversational AI, it is necessary to build training data that reflects real conversations between people, but current Korean datasets are not in question-answer format or use honorifics, making it difficult for users to feel closeness. In this paper, we propose a conversation dataset (KOMUChat) consisting of 30,767 question-answer sentence pairs collected from online communities. The question-answer pairs were collected from post titles and first comments of love and relationship counsel boards used by men and women. In addition, we removed abuse records through automatic and manual cleansing to build high quality dataset. To verify the validity of KOMUChat, we compared and analyzed the result of generative language model learning KOMUChat and benchmark dataset. The results showed that our dataset outperformed the benchmark dataset in terms of answer appropriateness, user satisfaction, and fulfillment of conversational AI goals. The dataset is the largest open-source single turn text data presented so far and it has the significance of building a more friendly Korean dataset by reflecting the text styles of the online community.
