Honeycomb sandwich composite structures have been widely used in aircraft and military industry because of light weight and high stiffness. Accurate mechanical properties of honeycomb materials are needed for analysis of sandwich composites. In this study, theoretical formula for elastic modulus of honeycomb materials was established considering bending and axial deformations of their walls. Finite-element analysis results were compared with theoretical ones of the longitudinal and transverse moduli of honeycomb materials. Consequently, the mechanical properties of honeycomb materials could be analytically predicted.

In this paper, research on the manufacturing technology of hexagonal structure core is investigated. Also the optimal forming process of the honeycomb core is developed and the rolling process is analyzed using finite element code, $DEFORM^{TM}$-3D. The standard honeycomb has a uniform hexagonal structure defined by the material, cell size, cell wall thickness and bulk density. Honeycomb core products can be made from any thin, flat material. The most common cell configuration is the hexagon but there are many other shapes for special applications. Because of the precision shape and the thin thickness, the honeycomb core is not easy to manufacture in the metal forming process. Through this study it was confirmed that after the rolling process, the section of honeycomb close to the standard shape can be obtained. This result is reflected to the manufacturing process design for the honeycomb core.
The effect of the core cell shape on shock absorption characteristics of biomimetically inspired honeycomb structures has been numerically investigated. The finite element models of honeycomb test specimen composed of five core cells of identical mass have been constructed, and numerical simulations have been run on PAMCRASH. The dimensions of the sides of core cells as well as the angle between the sides have been shown to influence the shock absorption characteristics of the honeycomb structure. The specimen with regular hexagonal core cell shape is found to show the best shock absorbing capacity, and specimen with rectangle-like core cell are found to provide good shock absorbing characteristics.

The mechanical properties of aluminum honeycomb on the direction of axial crushing under quasistatic loading test was investigated. The crushing process was simulated numerically by full-scale finite element models. Simulations reproduce the experimental results both qualitatively as well as quantitatively. From the investigation, we suggested the constitutive model of energy absorbing honeycomb structure for large scale impact analysis. Real impact test of the WB(Moving Deformable Barrier) was carried and compared with finite element simulation. Constitutive model used in the numerical simulation had a good correlation with experiment. By suggesting the optimizing method fur honeycomb cell configuration design, relationship between cell configuration and crush strength is studied.

The vibration characteristic of tire is heavily related to the noise and comfort on driving. Therefore, in this paper, we investigate modal charateristic of non-pneumatic tires with Honeycomb spokes. The modal analysis of non-pneumatic tire is investigated for geometric of non-pneumatic tire(NPT) which is designed according to the cell angle of honeycomb cell. Investigation of natural frequencies and mode shapes of non-pneumatic tire are compared regular type NPT with auxetic type NPT. The analysis is based on the finite element method and used ABAQUS program which is able to analyze of non-linear. The material of NPT is used for the Ogden energy model which is model of hyperelastic material. As a result, natural frequencies and mode shapes of non-pneumatic tires with honeycomb spokes are affected by the angle of honeycomb cell.
In this study, we fabricated honeycomb type Mixed-Gas Fuel Cell (MGFC) which has advantages of stacking to the axial direction and increasing volume power density. Honeycomb-shaped anode with four channels was prepared by dry pressing method. Two alternative channels were coated with electrolyte and cathode slurry in order to make cathodic reaction sites and the others were filled with partial oxidation (POX) catalyst to increase fuel conversion. Furthermore we employed the sol-gel technique which can increase cell performance and decrease carbon coking.
The aim of this paper is to perform the experiment and the numerical simulation for investigating the heat transfer in a regenerator system with ceramic honeycomb and to suggest a useful correlation for optimization of the regenerator system. For achieving this, the effects of some parameters were investigated, e. g., switching time, cell size and length of honeycomb on the mean temperature efficiency. The measured temperatures by R-type thermocouples were compared with the predictions by means of the commercial package, STAR-CD. A useful correlation for thermal efficiency was newly proposed as a function of the normalized switching time, defined in terms of switching time, cell size and length of honeycomb. The results showed that the thermal efficiency is above 90% and the normalized heat exchange rate is higher than 80% when the normalized switching time is less than 1000.
Additive manufacturing is an emerging method to manufacture objects with complex shapes and intricate geometry, such as cellular structures. The cellular structures can widely be used in lightweight application as it provides a high strength-to-load ratio. Under the various testing condition, each topology shows different mechanical properties. This study investigates the structural response of various types of cellular structures in compression loading, both experimentally and numerically. For that purpose, honeycomb, modified honeycomb, and spiral-type topology were selected to investigate. Besides, structural properties change by changing the cell size for each topology is also investigated. The specimens were subjected to a compression test by a universal testing machine to determine the absorbed energy and other mechanical properties. An implicit numerical study was also conducted to determine cellular structure's mechanical characteristics. The experimental and numerical results show that the honeycomb structure absorbs the maximum energy compared to the other structures. The experimentally and numerically calculated absorbed energy for the 4.8 mm honeycomb structure was 32.2J and 30.63J, respectively. The results also show that the increase of cell size for a particular cellular structure reduces the energy-absorbing ability of that structure.
The bending strength characteristics and local deformation behaviors of honeycomb sandwich composites were investigated using three-point bending experiment and finite element simulation with a real model of honeycomb core. Two kinds of cell sizes of honeycomb core, two kinds of skin layer thicknesses, perfect bonding specimen as well as initial delamination specimen were used for analysis of stress and deformation behaviors of honeycomb sandwich beams. Various failure modes such as skin layer yielding, interfacial delamination, core shear deformation and local buckling were considered. Its simulation results were very comparable to the experimental ones. Consequently, cell size of honeycomb core and skin layer thickness had dominant effects on the bending strength and deformation behaviors of honeycomb sandwich composites. Specimens of large core cell size and thin skin layer showed that bending strength decreased by $30\~68\%$.
The objective of this study is to evaluate effects of honeycomb cell size for compressive behaviors of square sandwich composite tubes with woven fabric carbon/epoxy skin and Al honeycomb core. In order to achieve these goals, four different kinds of tubes were fabricated and compressed to 200mm~250mm under quasi-static load of 10mm/min. The Al honeycombs with cell size of 6.35mm and 9.53mm were used. The relationship of mean compressive load and cell size was evaluated. In addition, the effect of peel strength and equivalent elastic modulus in ribbon direction for the mean compressive load was investigated.
