Homogeneous charge compression ignition(HCCI) combustion is an advanced technique for reducing the hazardous nitrogen oxide(NOx) and particulate matter(PM) in a diesel engine. NOx could be reduced by achieving lean homogeneous mixture resulting in combustion temperature. PM could be also reduced by eliminating fuel-rich zones which exist in conventional diesel combustion. However previous researches have reported that power-output of HCCI engine is limited by the high intensive knock and misfiring. In an attempt to extend the upper load limit for HCCI operation, supercharging in combination with Exhaust Gas Recirculation(EGR) has been applied: supercharging to increase the power density and EGR to control the combustion phase. The test was performed in a single cylinder engine operated at 1200 rpm. Boost pressures of 1.1 and 1.2 bar were applied. High EGR rates up to 45% were supplied. Most of fuel was injected at early timing to make homogeneous mixture. Small amount of fuel injection was followed near TDC to assist ignition. Results showed increasing boost pressure resulted in much higher power-output. Optimal EGR rate influenced by longer ignition delay and charge dilution simultaneously was observed.
Gasoline Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition (HCCI) combustion is a new combustion concept. Unlike the conventional internal combustion engine, the premixed fuel mixture with high residual gas rate is auto-ignited and burned without flame propagation. There are several operating factors which affect HCCI combustion such as start of combustion (SOC), residual gas fraction, engine rpm, etc. Among these factors SOC is a critical factor in the combustion because it affects exhaust gas emissions, engine power, fuel economy and combustion characteristics. Therefore SOC of gasoline HCCI should be controlled precisely, and SOC detection should be preceded SOC control. This paper presents a control oriented SOC detection method using 50 percent normalized difference pressure. Normalized difference pressure is defined as the normalized value of difference pressure and difference pressure is difference between the in-cylinder firing pressure and the motoring pressure. These methods were verified through the HCCI combustion experiments. The SOC detection method using difference pressure provides a fast and precise SOC detection.
The combustion characteristics of a liquefied petroleum gas-di-methyl ether (LPG-DME) compression ignition engine was investigated under homogeneous charge and stratified charge conditions. LPG was used as the main fuel and injected into the combustion chamber directly. DME was used as an ignition promoter and injected into the intake port. Different LPG injection timings were tested to verify the combustion characteristics of the LPG-DME compression ignition engine. The combustion was divided into three region which are homogeneous charge, stratified charge, and diffusion flame region according to the injection timing of LPG. The hydrocarbon emission of stratified charge combustion was lower than that of homogeneous charge combustion. However, the carbon monoxide and nitrogen oxide emission of stratified charge combustion were slightly higher than those of the homogeneous charge region. The indicated mean effective pressure was reduced at stratified charge region, while it was almost same level as the homogeneous charge combustion region at diffusion combustion region. The start of combustion timing of the stratified charge combustion and diffusion combustion region were advanced compared to the homogeneous charge combustion. It attributed to the higher cetane number and mixture temperature distribution which locally stratified. However, the knock intensity was varied as the homogeneity of charge was increased.
Diesel-Fueled HCCI(Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition) Engine is an advanced combustion process explained as a premixed charge of diesel fuel and air is admitted into the cylinder and compression ignited. It has possibility to reduce NOx by spontaneous auto-ignition at multiple points that allows very lean combustion resulting in low combustion temperatures. Also PM could be reduced by the premixed combustion and no fuel-rich zones. But HCCI couldn't be realized because of the difficulties in vaporizing the diesel, control of combustion phase directly. To solve these problems, new fuel injection strategy, explained as the pilot fuel injection to promote ignition near TDC following the main fuel injection at the extremely advanced timing, is applied during the compression ratio is varied from 18.9:1 to 27.7:1 This is not a pilot fuel to promote the ignition but also the direct control method of the combustion phase. Experimental result shows the pilot fuel injection promote the ignition and the compression ignition of the HCCI engine is achieved as compression ratio becomes higher. Also there is an optimal pilot fuel injection timing for the HCCI combustion. NOx is reduced more than 90% compared to DI-Diesel case but PM and THC emission needs more investigation.
HCCI (Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition) combustion has a great advantage in reducing NOx (Nitrogen Oxides) and PM (Particulate Matter) by lowering the combustion temperature due to spontaneous ignitions at multiple sites in a very lean combustible mixture. However, it is difficult to make a diesel-fuelled HCCI possible because of a poor vaporability of the fuel. To resolve this problem, the two-stage injection strategy was introduced to promote the ignition of the extremely early injected fuel. The compression ratio and air-fuel ratio were found to affect not only the ignition, but also control the combustion phase without a need for the intake-heating or EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation). The ignition timing could be controlled even at a higher compression ratio with increased IMEP (Indicated Mean Effective Pressure). The NOx (Nitrogen Oxides) emission level could be reduced by more than 90 % compared with that in a conventional DI (Direct Injection) diesel combustion mode, but the increase of PM and HC (Hydrocarbon) emissions due to over-penetration of spray still needs to be resolved.
Recently, there has been an interest in premixed diesel engines as it has the potential of achieving a more homogeneous and leaner mixture close to TDC compared to conventional diesel engines. Early studies are shown that in a HCCI(Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition) engine, the fuel injection timing and injection angle affects the mixture formations. Thus the purpose of this study was to investigate relationship of combustion and mixture formations according to injection timing and injection angle in a common rail direct injection type HCCI engine using a early injection method called the PCCI(Premixed Charge Compression Ignition). From this study, we found that the fuel. injection timing and injection angle affect the mixture formations and in turn affects combustion in the PCCI engine.
The aim of this paper is controlling ignition timing and load in homogeneous charge compression ignition (HCCI) combustion with low cetane number fuel, hydrogen. Homogeneous charge compression ignition (HCCI) combustion is an advanced combustion technology that achieves higher thermal efficiency and lower $NO_x$ emissions than that of conventional combustion system. Dimethyl ether (DME), which has been researched widely as the most attractive alternative fuel of diesel, is attractive for HCCI combustion because of the easy evaporation. In this study, the single cylinder DME engine operated with a direct injection system has been used to investigate combustion processes and emissions of DME HCCI with a premixed hydrogen supply. The experiment was carried out under various engine speed and fraction rates of hydrogen. As a result, the increase of fraction rates of hydrogen retard the DME ignition timing and eliminated the knocking during high engine speed condition. IMEP was increased with increase of fraction rates of hydrogen by 30%. 40% of the fraction rates of hydrogen resulted in misfiring. The $NO_x$ emission was reduced by increasing the fraction rates of hydrogen, but HC emission was increased.
HCCI(Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition) combustion is an advanced combustion process explained as a homogeneously premixed charge of a fuel where air is admitted into the cylinder and compression ignited. It has possibility to reduce NOx by spontaneous auto-ignition at multiple points that allows very lean combustion resulting in low combustion temperatures. Particulate matters (PM) could be also reduced by the homogeneous combustion and no fuel-rich zones. Injection timing is extremely advanced to achieve homogeneous charge where a diesel fuel could not be vaporized sufficiently due to low pressure and low temperature condition. Also the over-penetration could be a severe problem. The small injection angle and multi-hole injectors were applied to solve these problems. Dimethyl ether (DME) as an altenative fuel was also applied to relive the bad vaporization problem associated with early injection of diesel fuel. Neat DME has a very high cetane rating and high vapor pressure. Contained oxygen reduces soot during the combustion. Experimental result shows DME can be easily operated in an HCCI engine. PM shows almost zero value and NOx is reduced more than 90% compared to direct-injection diesel engine operating mode but problem of early ignition needs more investigation.
Effect of heterogeneity of combustion chamber has been thought as one of the way to avoid dramatically generating heat in HCCI Combustion. The purpose of this research is to investigate the effect of heterogeneity, especially thermal stratification and fuel strength stratification on HCCI Combustion fueled with DME and n-Butane. Thermal stratification is formed in Combustion Chamber of Rapid Compression Machine with 3 Kinds of pre-mixture has different properties. The stratified charge mixture is adiabatic compressed and on that process, in cylinder gas pressure and two-dimensional chemiluminescence images are measured and analyzed.
This paper investigates the steady-state combustion characteristics of the Homogeneous charge compression ignition(HCCI) engine with variable valve timing(VVT) and dimethyl ether(DME) direct injection, to find out its benefits in exhaust gas emissions. HCCI combustion is an attractive way to lower carbon dioxide($CO_2$), nitrogen oxides(NOx) emission and to allow higher fuel conversion efficiency. However, HCCI engine has inherent problem of narrow operating range at high load due to high in-cylinder peak pressure and consequent noise. To overcome this problem, the control of combustion start and heat release rate is required. It is difficult to control the start of combustion because HCCI combustion phase is closely linked to chemical reaction during a compression stroke. The combination of VVT and DME direct injection was chosen as the most promising strategy to control the HCCI combustion phase in this study. Regular gasoline was injected at intake port as main fuel, while small amount of DME was also injected directly into the cylinder as an ignition promoter for the control of ignition timing. Different intake valve timings were tested for combustion phase control. Regular gasoline was tested for HCCI operation and emission characteristics with various engine conditions. With HCCI operation, ignition delay and rapid burning angle were successfully controlled by the amount of internal EGR that was determined with VVT. For best IMEP and low HC emission, DME should be injected during early compression stroke. IMEP was mainly affected by the DME injection timing, and quantities of fuel DME and gasoline. HC emission was mainly affected by both the amount of gasoline and the DME injection timing. NOx emission was lower than conventional SI engine at gasoline lean region. However, NOx emission was similar to that in the conventional SI engine at gasoline rich region. CO emission was affected by the amount of gasoline and DME.
