  • Closed-form analytical expressions and 3-dimensional normalized charts for the homogeneous sensing and surface sensing structures are derived to provide the conditions for the maximum sensitivity of integrated-optic biosensors based on evanescent-wave and stepindex planar optical waveguides. The analysis is made for transverse electric (TE) polarization mode, in both cases where the measurand is homogeneously distributed in the cover (namely, homogeneous sensing), and where it is an ultrathin film on the waveguide-cover interface (namely, surface sensing).

  • The analysis of plankton species distribution in sea or fresh water is very important in preserving marine ecosystem health. Since manual analysis is infeasible, many automatic approaches were proposed. They usually use images from in situ towed underwater imaging sensor or specially designed, lab mounted microscopic imaging system. Normally they assume that only single plankton is present in an image so that, if there is a clumping among multiple plankton of same species (homogeneous clumping) or if there are multiple plankton of different species scattered in an image (heterogeneous interspersion), they have a difficulty in recognition. In this work, we propose a deep learning based method that can detect and recognize individual plankton in images with homogeneous clumping, heterogeneous interspersion, or combination of both.

  • The objective of this study is to develop the theoretical model of the telecommunication system service availability from the user perspective. We assume non-homogeneous Poisson process for the call arrival process and continuous time Markov chain for the system state. The proposed model effectively describes the user model of the user-perceived service reliability by including the time-varying call arrival rate. We also include the operational failure state where the user cannot receive any service even though the system is functioning.

  • The contiguous or adjacent foundations are always coupled through the soil. Hence their behavior is quite different due to the interaction effects between or among the foundations. The interaction effects can be very pronounced if the distance between them is very close.   • Most of seismic reflection prospecting assumes subsurface formation to be homogeneous media. These models are not capable of estimating small scale heterogeneity which is verified by well log data or drilling core. And those synthetic seismograms by homogeneous media are limited to explain various changes at field data. So we developed a inhomogeneous velocity model which can estimate inhomogeneity of background medium to implement numerical modeling from homogeneous medium and inhomogeneous medium on the model. Background medium using three autocorrelation functions in order to generate inhomogeneous velocity media was according to dominant wavelength of background medium and correlation length of random medium. And then we compared shot gathers. The results show that numerical modeling implemented at inhomogeneous medium depicts complex wave propagation of field data.

  • In this paper, we solve the additive ${\rho}-functional$ equations (0.1) $f(x+y)+f(x-y)-2f(x)={\rho}(2f(\frac{x+y}{2})+f(x-y)-2f(x))$, and (0.2) $2f(\frac{x+y}{2})+f(x-y)-2f(x)={\rho}(f(x+y)+f(x-y)-2f(x))$, where ${\rho}$ is a fixed (complex) number with ${\rho}{\neq}1$, Using the direct method, we prove the Hyers-Ulam stability of the additive ${\rho}-functional$ equations (0.1) and (0.2) in ${\beta}-homogeneous$ (complex) F-spaces.

  • For the fabrication of multifunctional biopolymer nanocomposites in the combination of carbon nanotubes (CNTs), recently increasing attention has been paid to an effective homogenization of CNTs within polymer matrices and a fine tuning of the concentration. We developed an efficient method to produce homogeneous CNT-polycaprolactone nanocomposites with various and controllable CNT concentrations using an ionically-modified multi-walled CNT, MWCNT-Cl. The modified MWCNTs could be homogeneously dispersed in tetrahydrofuran (THF). Polycaprolactone (PCL) as a biodegradable and biocompatible polymer was smoothly dissolved in the homogeneous MWCNT-Cl/THF solution without agglomeration of MWCNT-Cl. The physicochemical and mechanical properties of the resultant nanocomposites were examined and the biological usefulness was briefly assessed.

  • The newly synthesized homogeneous chiral Co(III) salen complexes were anchored non-covalently on the acidic sites of mesoporous Al-SBA-15. The Bronsted and Lewis acidic sites are attributed to the immobilization of fluorine functionalized chiral salen complexes on the supports. XRD, BET, TEM, FT-IR and ESCA (XPS) analyses were performed to characterize the property of support, and the structure of new homogeneous and heterogeneous chiral Co salen catalyst. The homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysts could be applied in asymmetric ring opening of epichlorohydrine (ECH) by water. They showed very high enantioselectivity and a good yield up to 99% in the catalytic synthesis of optically active products.

  • To investigate the effect of sample size on coefficient of consolidation of non-homogeneous soil, the result of a large size consolidation test using a huge undisturbed sample with $1200mm(D){\times}2000mm(H)$ in dimension is compared with that of oedometer test using undisturbed small sample. In addition, test results are compared with those of same test using remold sample. Experimental results show that, due to the lump of sand/silt was mixed in sample, the coefficient of consolidation of undisturbed samples have a difference for each tests. Whereas, the difference of coefficient of consolidation between remolded large and small samples is not found. Because sample size affects the test results, sample must be carefully selected for non-homogeneous soil.

  • In this paper, a homogeneous dual composite right/left-handed (D-CRLH) transmission line (TL) is proposed by using a defected ground structure (DGS) on the ground plane. In order to satisfy a homogeneity condition of metamaterial, a subwavelength unit cell is designed by way of a spiral DGS and a meander stub. From a dispersion diagram, it is expected that the frequency bands for the left-handed (LH) property is 3.5 - 4.4 GHz. At 3.8 GHz in the LH band, backward propagating phenomenon is observed from full-wave analysis. The experimental results show that the proposed TL has a stop-band in 1.75 - 3.6 GHz.
