  • This study explores how the patriarchal system instigates violence through the use of a lottery in "The Lottery" by Shirley Jackson and a reaping in The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins. To maintain its validity, the patriarchal system makes people internalize the principle of homicide in everyday life. One of the effective ways to sustain the patriarchal system is to develop the gender concept clearly. In "The Lottery," traditional gender segregation results in the construction of a homogeneous community supported by patriarchal concepts. On the other hand, The Hunger Games shows how Katniss Everdeen, the main character, experiences the different gender roles and norms according to the specific surroundings like her hometown (the 12th district), Capitol (the capital of Panem), and finally the Hunger Games stadium, where she has to kill others to survive. In the end, Katniss both becomes a political entity through playing gender performance supported by Judith Butler.

The data was collected through observation from 27th June to 7th July 2008 in Jian, Jilin Province China. The children's play and lifestyles were observed, and data pertaining to the culture of the people were collected by a teacher and staff. We also visited the residents for housing information. The results are given below. 1. They dressed in Korean clothes on festive days and the boys put on a hood. They had eating habits which included cooking for themselves or buying semi-manufactured goods but did not use, instant food. The housing habits involved a combination of cooking and heating by Korean floor heating system(Ondol). They utilized outdoor space to grow vegetables. Those with a fulltime job(teacher) preferred to live in an apartment but an apartment was too expensive. Public utility charges and traffic expenses were cheap. 2. The main festive days are the lunar New Year's Day and Chuseok. The children returned home and enjoyed the festive day with their parents. The language used are Korean language and Chinese. Some Korean words and phrases in Jian Joseonjok have different meanings as compared to how they are used in Korea. A capping ceremony did not to celebrate becoming an adult from an adolescent. Couples performed a wedding ceremony at a wedding hall attended by their parents and invited relatives from both families. The relatives gave the couple a wedding gift. They did not go on a wedding trip as it was not affordable but instead spent their wedding night at a hotel in this culture. When someone dies, they bury the body after cremation. They perform a memorial service for three years on the birthday of the departed. They have a banquet on the 60th birthdays with their relatives and neighbours and are typically presented with a carp for longevity. 3. • Objectives : Polymorphisms of genes from glutathione Stransferases (GSTs) and N-acetyltransferase 2 (NAT2) have been associated with increased susceptibility to various cancers. Previous results showed that East Asians such as Koreans, Japanese and Chinese have a much higher frequency of the GSTM1 and GSTT1 null genotypes and NAT2 rapid acetylator type. Therefore, we investigated the association between the polymorphic types of GSTs (GSTM1, GSTT1, GSTP1) and NAT2 and the incidence of gastric cancer which is one of the most prevalent cancers among the East Asians. Methods : It was performed in a case-control study consisting of 238 healthy subjects and 108 cancer patients (54 distal and 54 proximal carcinomas). We also evaluated the association between GSTs and NAT2 and the risk factors for gastric cancer such as alcohol consumption, smoking, H. pylori infection, family history of gastric cancer, and tumor location. Results : In our study, the percentage of cases whose hometown was rural was higher than those of controls (odds ratio (OR) =2.88; 95% CI=1.72-4.76), and the frequency of the lower socio-economic status increased significantly in patients (OR=2.53; 95% CI=1.59-4.02). There was no significant difference in the GST polymorphic types between the cases and controls. However, NAT2 rapid or intermediate acetylator types were frequently detected in the cases with family history of gastric cancer (OR=1.92; 95% CI=1.79-26.0). Conclusions : These results suggest that the hometown and socio-economic status are important environmental factors for gastric carcinogenesis, and NAT2 polymorphic types could be associated with familial gastric carcinoma.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the characteristics of speech intelligibility of spontaneous speech and the vowel space parameters in patients with Parkinson's disease. Ten PD patients (M=5, F=5) and a corresponding control group of ten normal adults participated in this study. Firstly, subjects were asked to tell a story about their hometown and youth in order to analyze speech intelligibility. Secondly, the subjects were also asked to repeat four vowels (/a/, /i/, /u/, /e/) five times in order to compare their vowel spaces. The results were as follows: (1) the speech intelligibility of the PD group was lower than that of the control group. (2) Four parameters including vowel area, vowel articulatory index, formant centralization ratio, F2i/F1u ratio were significantly different in each group. For instance, vowel area and F2 ratio were wider and higher, respectively. As a result, a decrease in speech intelligibility of patients with PD is likely to show different types of errors from the normal group. The results of this research are meaningful in a sense that they could provide the objective standard of speech intelligibility and vowel space parameters.

  • We studied the relations between variables related to fan's preference in a area of pro-baseball which is the most popular one among pro-sports. The dependent variables are pro-baseball team fan's preference to both the team and the products of the company which has a pro-baseball team, while the independent variables are sex, age, and hometown of fans. Eight hypotheses are constructed with those variables. For testing them a questionnaire was used, whose reliability was checked using Kronbach Alpha. Subjects were 314 college students in a local city. For statistical analysis nonparametric tests like Mann Whitney test, Kruskal-Wallis test, etc were used. Useful and significant results among variables were obtained. Since these results have important implications about management of pro-sports teams and fans and fans Preference to products in a view of sports marketing management, more researches should be done continuously in the future in this area.

  • The purpose of this research was to find out the housing history of Sakhalin returnees since leaving hometown under the Japanese ruling period. Face to face interview had been done with 20 returnees in the community center during October to December, 2008. Personal life as well as housing histories were differed by the reason to move into Sakhalin, which still influenced the returnee' life in Ansan. The housing they had lived changed from barracks like a training camp, to Japanese small wooden cottage/row house, and then Russian brick house/apartment. Housing alteration and addition were common to renew the old house. The boundary of residing area was mostly limited to the first residing location throughout one's life without a long distance move. Housing satisfaction was very high in Gohyangmaeul because of the improvement of housing facilities and residence itself as well as convenience of housing management compared to the residence in Sakhalin. Economic and emotional aspect of life satisfaction were also high through about 8 years of living in. Forced movers still require the compensation on hand no matter the amount.

  • The paper explores the return migration choice of graduates, which takes place during the transition from higher education to the labor market. Graduate students, after a short time in temporary migration to cities for studying, have to make a decision of returning back home or staying in migration in urban areas for working. Drawing on the mechanism identified in the literature on internal migration, this empirical research tests the effects of two factors: place attractiveness and social supports factors on graduates' decision to return migration to hometown. A binary logit regression analysis was conducted with data from 502 surveyed graduates in Hanoi, Vietnam. The analysis of the motives reported by graduates indicates that return migration decisions cannot be reduced to a single dimension. Perceived attractiveness of a region such as quality of living environment, job opportunities, and social context of individuals positively impact on student' decision to return migration after graduation. The research results imply that, in a collectivistic country like Vietnam, students' choice of future career is strongly influenced by their social context, and choosing a place to work is not simply a matter of earning a higher salary or enjoying better working conditions, but is also related to family issues.
