In the Mobile IP, the movement of Mobile Host(MH) causes packets to be transmitted through a long route. A Correspond Node(CN) first communicate with a Home Agent(HA) when a Mobile Host moved from one subnet to another subnet. The HH-MIP algorithm reduces an inefficient transmission of packets by regarding a Foreign Agent(FA) near a mobile host as a Temporary Home Agent(THA). However, The algorithm costs the unnecessary signaling by measuring the distance of route between a FA and a THA for handover in the case that a Mobile host comes from a THA which a current FA never communicated. To solve this problem, we propose a scheme called Hierarchical Home Agent Handover in Mobile IP(HHH-MIP) algorithm. Our HHH-MIP algorithm only searches tables in a router by using the hierarchical structure between a FA and a THA. The simulation results show that the HHH-MIP algorithm reduces the additional signaling cost.

This paper proposes a handover algorithm for the mobile host in order to reduce the number of unnecessary retransmissions during handover. In our proposal, the home agent buffers user data after receiving the registration request message form the foreign agent and then transmits them again after a predefined time. We also analyze the packet disordering probability between two user data under an assumption that the home agent generates all user data. One of two user data is the one which has been generated just before the home agent receives the registration request message and the other is generated just after that. Simulation results show that our proposal provides efficient handover for a mobile host by reducing the packet disordering probalility.

This paper proposes a new handover scheme to minimize handover delay and signaling costs, using the fact that a new packet forwarding path could be same or similar to the old one in Mobile IPv4. In the proposed scheme a foreign agent estimates the correlation between the new and old routing paths by using routing costs after receiving a registration request message from a mobile node. If the new packet forwarding path could be same or similar to the old one, the mobile node can receive packets from its old foreign agent without registering its new location with its home agent or correspondent node. The performance analysis shows that the proposed scheme can efficiently reduce handover delay and signaling costs.
In Mobile IPv6, a handover latency is an important issue. To reduce the handover latency, mipshop working group in IETF has studied the fast handover(FMIPv6) which creates and verifies a new care-of address(NCoA) in advance before a layer 2 handover resulting in reduced handover latency. Even in FMIPv6, the NCoA must be registered in a home agent(HA). This registration still creates a significant amount of delay. To reduce registration latency, we propose a tentative and early binding update(TEBU) scheme that the NCoA is registered in the HA in advance during the layer 2 handover based on FMIPv6. We use cost analysis for the performance evaluation. As a result, we found that the TEBU scheme guarantees lower handover latency than FMIPv6 as much as approximately 21%.

When Mobile IPv6 is deployed in commercial network, a mobile node needs AAA services for an authentication, authorization and accounting. AAA and Mobile IPv6 are protocols which are operated independently. Then schemes which merge these protocols have been emerged. These schemes can enable a mobile node to establish a security association between the mobile node and a home agent and to perform a binding update for the home agent using AAA authentication request. But these schemes introduce many signal messages and long handover latency during the handover, since Route Optimization mode for Mobile Ipv6 is performed using Return Routability procedure. To solve this problem, we propose a scheme for Route Optimization mode that the home agent performs the binding update for a correspondent node via the AAA infrastructure between the home agent and the correspondent node instead of Return Routability procedure. For performance evaluation, we analyze signal message transmission costs and handover latencies during handover. We show performance improvement of the proposed scheme which reduces handover latency as 61% compared with the existing scheme.

Recently, the mobility of users and mobile communication technologies have developed rapidly. The users in this state also want to connect their devices and to receive services anywhere, anytime. Hierarchical Mobile IPv6 (HMIPv6) has been proposed by the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) to compensate for such problems as handover latency and signaling overhead when employing Mobile IPv6 (MIPv6). HMIPv6 supports micro-mobility within a domain and introduces a new entity, namely Mobility Anchor Point (MAP) as a local home agent. However, HMIPv6 has been found to cause longer handover latency when the inter-domain handover occurs. This is because a Mobile Node (MN) has to generate two addresses and register them to Home Agent (HA) a MAP, respectively. In order to solve such problems, we propose a scheme that an MN generates one address and registers it to HA for supporting fast handover during the inter-domain handover process. In the proposed scheme, the load of MAP and MAP domain is reduced because the number of MNs which are managed by MAP is decreased and the MAP does not perform proxy Neighbor Discovery Protocol (NDP) to intercept packets destined to MNs. We evaluate the performance of proposed scheme in comparison to HMIPv6 through the simulation and numerical analysis.

In this paper, we propose a new datagram delivery strategy at the home agent to improve the end-to-end performance by reducing retransmission overheads during handover. Changed routing might be able to cause packet disordering and this in turn could cause unnecessary retransmission at the fixed host and finally results in performance degradation. In our proposal, the home agent begins to buffer received datagrams instead of transmitting them after receiving a registration request message from the foreign agent and then transmits them again after for a certain time. Simulation results show that our proposal may successfully solve this problem at little cost.
As a mobility support for IP have studied, Internet Engineering Task Force(IETF) standardized the Mobile IPv6(MIPv6) protocol. When a mobile node moves between subnets, MIPv6 maintains connectivity to network and supports seamless communication, and these processes are called a Handover. Whenever the mobile node moves between subnets, the Handover is performed. The mobile node can not communicate during the Handover. This period is Galled Handover latency. To reduce this latency, mipshop working group standardizes Fast Handovers for Mobile IPv6(FMIPv6), but latency which the mobile node registers its new care-of address to a home agent and a correspondent node is still long. To solve this problem, we propose a scheme that the mobile node registers the new care-of address to the home agent and initiates Return Routability procedure in advance during layer 2 handover, based on FMIPv6 and IEEE 802.11. We analyze MIPv6, FMIPv6 and the proposed scheme in term of packet transmission cost during the Handover. Compared to MIPv6 the proposed scheme gains 79% improvement, while it gains 31% improvement compared to FMIPv6.

Hierarchical Mobile IPv6 (HMIPv6) has been proposed by Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) to compensate for such problems as handover latency and signaling overhead in employing Mobile IPv6 (MIPv6). HMIPv6 supports micro-mobility within a domain and introduces a new entity, namely mobility anchor point (MAP) as a local home agent. However, HMIPv6 causes load concentration at a particular MAP and longer handover latency when inter-domain handover occurs. In order to solve such problems, this paper establishes a virtual domain (VD) of a higher layer MAP and proposes a MAP changing algorithm in which the routing path changes between mobile node (MN) and correspondent node(CN) according to the mobile position and the direction of the MN before inter-domain handover occurs. The proposed algorithm not only enables complete handover binding-update of the on-link care of address (LCoA) only when inter-domain handover occurs, but concentrated load of a particular MAP is distributed as well. This is because the MNs registered with higher layer MAP and lower layer MAP coexist in the VD. We simulate the performance of the proposed algorithm and compare with HMIPv6.

This paper proposes a seamless handover scheme for high-speed trains using dual mobile routers to minimize service disruption time and packet loss during handovers. In the proposed scheme, each of the dual mobile routers is located at each end of the moving network for space diversity. One of the two mobile routers can continuously receive packets from its home agent, while the other is undergoing a handover, but they act as one logical mobile router. Analytical and simulation results showed that the proposed scheme could provide no service disruption or packet losses during handovers.
