  • The internally confined hollow-concrete filled tube (ICH-CFT) column has two tubes on the both sides (hollow part and outer part) of the concrete. The inner tube and the outer tube perform great seismic abilities, ductility and absorption of energy due to the steel tubes and the hollow part. So, the study of this column type for the practical use is needed. In this study, the qualitative analysis about seismic capacities depending on parameters is performed for the practical design of the ICH-CFT column. The parameters are diameter of column, hollow ratio and thickness of tubes with the same resistance of the moment. Also, the economical evaluation of ductility and comparison with CFT column make this study to be of practical use. Especially, a change of seismic performance depends on the hollow ratio and the thickness of the outer tube, and the economical hollow ratios according to the thickness of the outer tube in the ICH-CFT column are suggested.

  • A hybrid double skin concrete filled (HDSCF) circular steel tube column is proposed in this study. The yield strength of the outer steel tube is larger than 690MPa and the inner tube has less strength. In order to achieve efficiency with the high strength outer tube, a feasibility study on reducing the thickness of the tube below the specified design codes for CFTs was conducted based on an experimental approach. The experiment also took variables such as thickness of the inner tube, hollow ratio, and strength of concrete into consideration to investigate the behavior of the HDSCF column. In order to estimate the applicability of design equations for CFTs to the HDSCF column, test results from CFT and HDSCF columns with design codes were compared. It was found that the axial compressive performance of the proposed HDSCF column is equivalent to that of the conventional CFT member irrespective of design variables. Furthermore, the design equation for a circular CFT given by EC4 is applicable to estimate the ultimate strength of the HDSCF circular steel tube column.

  • Hollow prestressed concrete-filled steel tube (HCFT) piles, which combines PHC piles inside thin-wall steel tubes, were developed to increase the flexural strength of the pile with respect to the lateral load. Since P-M curves are needed for evaluating the structural safety of piles when applying HCFT piles to fields, equations for plotting P-M curves of HCFT piles in limit states were proposed. When the yield strength is applied to the steel tube and PC steel bar of HCFT piles, the proposed equations significantly underestimated the flexural strength of HCFT piles. Unlike the flexural strength test results, the proposed equations also provide greater flexural strengths for 12 mm thick steel pipe piles with the same diameter than for HCFT piles. However, when the ultimate strengths are used instead of the yield strengths for the steel tube and PC steel bar, the proposed equations provide the flexural strengths very close to the flexural strength test results.

  • Interaction between the external thin-walled steel tube and the internal concrete core significantly increases the bending resistance of composite beams and beam-columns in comparison with the steel or concrete members. There is presented a developed method for design of hollow and solid concrete-filled steel tubular beams based on test data, which gives better agreement with test results than EC4 because its limitation to take an increase in strength of concrete caused by confinement contradicts the recommendation of 6.7.2(4) that full composite action up to failure may be assumed between steel and concrete components of the member. Good agreement between the results of carried out experimental, numerical and theoretical investigations allows recommending the proposed method to use in design practice.

  • A mortar-filled rectangular hollow structural section (RHS) can increase a structural section property as well as a compressive buckling capacity of a RHS member. In this study, the tensile performance of newly developed mortar-filled RHS members was experimentally evaluated with various connection details. The major test parameters were the type of end connections, the thickness of cap plates and shear plates, the use of stud bolts, and penetrating bars. The test results showed that the welded T-end connection experienced a brittle weld fracture at the welded connection, whereas the tensile performance of the T-end connection was improved by additional stud bolts inserted into the mortar within the RHS tube. For the end connection using shear plates and penetrating stud bolts, ductile behavior of the RHS tube was achieved after yielding. The penetrating bars increased load carrying capacity of the RHS. Based on the analysis of the load transfer mechanism, the current design code and test results were compared to evaluate the tensile capacity of the RHS tube according to the connection details. Design considerations for the connections of the mortar-filled RHS tubes were also recommended.

  • In this study, Hollow Concrete Filled FRP Tube Pile(HCFFT Pile) was proposed as a model to utilize the advantages of composite piles and solve the problem of corrosion, which is a disadvantage of CFT piles, and a numerical analysis model was developed to analyze their behavior. The strain compatibility method was applied considering the damage plastic behavior of concrete, the yield plastic behavior of steel, and the elastic behavior of FRP. The flexural strength calculation equation of HCFFT piles was proposed considering the change of the FRP tube section according to the distance from the neutral axis. The flexural strength calculation equation, numerical analysis results, and experimental results were compared and analyzed to verify their adequacy. The results of this study can be used as basic data for the optimal design of various HCFFT piles using FRP.

  • Concrete filled steel tube column has a large load carrying capacity through its steel and concrete interaction which makes it useful in construction. However, it has not been used often in a practical construction field. This is partly due to the non-destructive inspection method for concrete filling which has yet to be established. Furthermore, there are the lack of test data and a practical method in evaluating the ultimate load carrying capacity of concrete filled steel tube column. This paper will attempt to predict the ultimate strength of short concrete filled square tubular steel columns through conducting several tests. To accumulate the new test data on concrete filled steel tube columns, a total of 42 specimens of steel tubular columns were monotonically tested under concentric axial force, having the slenderness ratio(${\lambda}=10,\;15,\;20$), width-thickness ratio(d/t=25.0, 33.3) and concrete strengths($F_{c}=210,\;240,\;270kg/cm^{2}$). The hollow sections and concrete filled steel columns were compared to check the lateral confinded effects by steel tube. Through these test results, we propose a coefficient k=3.64 for the strength evaluation formula(10) of concrte filled tubular steel short columns.

  • To fully understand shear mechanisms and composite effects of circular concrete-filled steel tube (CFST) columns, systematic numerical investigations were conducted in this paper by improved finite element models. The triaxial plastic-damage constitutive model of the concrete and the interactions between the concrete and steel tube were considered. Afterwards, the critical and upper bound shear span ratios of the circular CFST column under lateral shear loading were determined. The composite effects between the two materials were analyzed by comparing the shear resistance with plain concrete column and hollow steel tube. In addition, a method that predicts the shear bearing capacity of a circular CFST column was proposed. The confining effects on the concrete core and the restraining effects on the steel tube were considered in this method. The proposed formula can predict more accurate results than the methods in different codes and references.

  • The grid structures with welded hollow spherical joint (WHSJ) have gained increasing popularity for use in industrial buildings with suspended cranes, and usually welded with steel tube (ST). The fatigue performance of steel tube-welded hollow spherical joint (ST-WHSJ) is however not yet well characterized, and there is little research on fatigue life prediction methods of ST-WHSJ. In this study, based on previous fatigue tests, three series of specimen fatigue data with different design parameters and stress ratios were compared, and two fatigue failure modes were revealed: failure at the weld toe of the ST and the WHSJ respectively. Then, S-N curves of nominal stress were uniformed. Furthermore, a finite element model (FEM) was validated by static test, and was introduced to assess fatigue behavior with the hot spot stress method (HSSM) and the effective notch stress method (ENSM). Both methods could provide conservative predictions, and these two methods had similar results. However, ENSM, especially when using von Mises stress, had a better fit for the series with a non- positive stress ratio. After including the welding residual stress and mean stress, analyses with the local stress method (LSM) and the critical distance method (CDM, including point method and line method) were carried out. It could be seen that the point method of CDM led to more accurate predictions than LSM, and was recommended for series with positive stress ratios.
