  • Due to the nature of semi-submergible drilling rig, various equipments are arranged in a limited space, and therefore the many types of outfitting holes passing through the hull structure are densely arranged and that is required the detailed structural strength evaluation in terms of ULS and FLS by class or client. Particularly, semi-submergible drilling rig has a variety of global load which affects the structure strength around holes compared to general commercial ship, and its response of stress is also complicated, so it is difficult to carry out the prediction design of structural strength evaluation and reinforcement. In this regard, this paper presents a case study on the evaluation of structural strength for the various holes and large openings of semi-submergible drilling rig conducted by our company, as well as an established hole verification procedure.

  • In order to inspect burr geometry and hole quality in micro-drilling processes, a cost-effective method using an image processing and shape from focus (SFF) methods on the machine tool is proposed. A CCD camera with a zoom lens and a novel illumination unit is used in this paper. Since the on-machine vision unit is incorporated with the CNC function of the machine tool, direct measurement and condition monitoring of micro-drilling processes are conducted between drilling processes on the machine tool. Stainless steel and hardened tool steel are used as specimens, as well as twist drills made of carbide are used in experiments. Validity of the developed system is confirmed through experiments.

  • Glass fiber epoxy composite material is widely used in the structures of aircrafts, robots and other machines because of their high specific strength, high specific stiffness and high damping. In order for the composite materials to be used in the aircraft structures or machine elements, accurate surfaces for bearing mounting or joint must be provided, which require precise machining. In this paper, the machinability of the glass fiber epoxy composite material was experimentally investigated. The results can be summarized as follows : 1. The entrance of hole is very good manufacturing existing, but exit come to occur sever surface exfoliation. 2. The cutting force in drilling of the glass fiber epoxy composite material is decreased as the drilling speed increased. 3. If the glass fiber epoxy composite material is drilling by the standard twist drill, then the hole recommand cutting condition is spindle speed 400∼600rpm, feed 40∼50mm/min.

  • Burr formed in drilling are classified into three types. no burr, burrs with cap, teared burr. To control burr size in drilling. the second type burrs with cap are to be formed because it is small and uniform. It is necessary to understand the mechanism of cap formation to derive the burr formation into second type burr with cap. In several materials, second type burrs are formed in drilling by changing cutting conditions. It is observed that cap is formed as a result of the plastic deformation along the outside of exit hole. According to the tension behavior of the material in concentrated region between hole and drill outside edge, the geometry of burr with cap is determined.

  • The micro-extruding die is a die for manufacturing of fine-wire by extruding process. The fine-wire made from the micro-extruding can be effectively applied to fields of semiconductor parts and medical parts etc. It is predicted that the demand of fine-wire in industry is more and more increasing. In this study $\phi50\mu m$ micro-drill which is coated with diamond is used for drilling of super micro-hole sizes. For the machining of taper parts of entrance and exit, drill having $\phi50\mu\textrm{mm}$ inclination angle $20^{\circ}$and angle $30^{\circ}$ is used. This is useful for anti tool-breakage and excessive too-wear in drilling process. After micro-drilling, the polishing process by diamond abrasive and polishing wood s carried out for increasing surface roughness.

  • Multi-layer printed circuit board(PCB) is being used widely for the product with relatively complex circuits such as TV, VTR and FAX. With the rapid enlargement of electronic and IT industry, the hole machining technology on multi-layer PCB is increasingly required to improve. Thus, the micro drilling with ultrasonic vibration can be a good method for hole machining. Unlike conventional drilling, ultrasonic vibration applied drilling introduces less wear and fracture of not only tool but also internal surface of workpiece due to little cutting resistance, thus, machinability can be improved. The experiment is conducted through the comparison between the results of conventional drilling and ultrasonic micro drilling as well as among each results by the variation according to not only feed rate of drill but also amplitude and frequency of ultrasonic vibration. The multi-layer PCB consists of 6 layers and ${\Phi}$0.3 diameter drill was used. As a result, it was found that the state of internal surfaces of holes on multiple layer PCBs is improved by the application of ultrasonic vibration.

  • The first stage rotating blade of industrial gas turbine is one of the components that is normally run in exposed state at the highest temperature of the combustion gas stream. For this reason superior materials and advanced cooling technology are required to allow higher heat resisting characteristics of the component. The 1st stage blade of a selected commercial gas turbine blade made of directionally solidified Ni-based superalloy has a row of cooling holes on its trailing edge. In most cases, minor cracks have been found at some of the root cooling holes after one cycle operation (24,000 hrs) or even shorter operation time because of the high temperature gradient and the frequently alternating thermal stress. In the repair process, unfortunately, it is usually very difficult to get rid of the damage due to the fact that cracks are initiated at the root cooling hole and propagated deep into the hole. In this study, the feasibility of removing the sidewall cracks in the hole by utilizing EDM drilling has been investigated. Also the criteria of surface integrity for EDM drilling were established to achieve high quality repair as well as machining accuracy.

  • Residual stresses in structural materials are stresses that exist in the objective without the application of any service or other external loads. Manufacturing processes are the most common causes of residual stress. To examine the effect and the distribution of residual stress due to press forming and welding in the production of a 600MPa-class steel tube, a residual stress evaluation test was performed. The measurement used the Hole-Drilling Strain Gauge Method and evaluated the distribution of residual stress, which measured a total of 59 places near the welding line.

  • An experimental study was carried out to study the solid-liquid mixture upward flow in a vertical and inclined annulus with rotating inner cylinder. Lift forces acting on a fluidized particle plays a central role in many importance applications, such as the removal of drill cuttings in horizontal drill holes, sand transport in fractured reservoirs, sediment transport and cleaning of particles from surfaces, etc. Field measurements have revealed that the pressure drop over a borehole during drilling of a slim oil well or a well with a long reach can depend significantly on the rotation speed of the drill pipe. An accurate prediction of the annular frictional pressure drop is therefore important for conditions where the annular clearance is small. Effect of annulus inclination and drill pipe rotation on the carrying capacity of drilling fluid, particle rising velocity, and pressure drop in the slim hole annulus have been measured for fully developed flows of water and of aqueous solutions.
