  • Alnus japonica Steud (A. japonica) have long been used in the traditional medicine for gastric disorder, hepatitis and fatty liver in Korea. Antiulcer effects of A. japonica hot water extract (AJ ext) were evaluated by in vitro antibacterial activity against H. pylori, by the inhibitory action against the in vitro gastric $H^+/K^+$-ATPase and using rat models of gastric mucosal damage and gastric ulcer induced by HCl-ethanol, indomethacin, and restraint and water-immersion stress. For the determination of antibacterial activity of AJ ext against H. pylori, the activity of urease which released from H. pylori was measured in culture. AJ ext showed weak antibacterial activity against H. pylori with the growth inhibitions of 37% and 61% by adding final concentrations of 500 and $1000{\mu}g/ml$ culture, respectively at 24 h. To observe the inhibitory activity of AJ ext against the $H^+/K^+$-ATPase in hog gastric membrane vesicle, $IC_{50}$ value of AJ ext was $806.3{\mu}g/ml$. Pretreatment of AJ ext (200, 500 mg/kg, p.o.) prevented in a dose-dependent manner the acute gastritis in HCl-ethanol model and the formation of gastric ulcer in indomethacin model and restraint and water-immersion stress model. These results suggest that the AJ ext can be used for prevention and treatment of gastric mucosal damage and ulcers induced by various stress.

  • This study describes a stable and simple method for the measurement of cholesteryl ester transfer protein(CETP) activities using reconstituted HDL and LDL as substrates. Apolipoproteins (apo) A-I and -B were purified from hog plasma by a new strategy without ultracentrifugation and delipidation. a simple two-step column chromatography was administered. In the first step of phenyl-sepharose CL-4B column chro-matography, hydrophobic plasma proteins were isolated. The most hydrophobic proteins bound to the column appeared to be A-I and apo-B. Contaminat proteins were efficiently eliminated from the sample by washing the column with 0.3M NaCI containing buffer after loading the plasma on the column. Two pure proteins showing each single band on SDS-PSGE of apo A-I and apo-B were individually obtained by a subsequent gel filtration column chromatography(Sephadex G-200). This two-step purification was simple and inexpensive compared to the ultracentrifugation and/or delipidation method that are most commonly used. Reconstituted hight-density lipoproteins(HDL) and low-density lipoproteins(LDL) were prepared using the purified apo A-I and-B, respectively. When these artificially prepared HDL and LDL were used in the assays for CETP as the cholesteryl ester(CE) donor and acceptor respectively, the specific transfer of CE increased up to two fold compared to that used the native HSL and LDL.

  • A vanishing point is a point on an image to which parallel lines projected from a real space gather. A vanishing point in a road space provides important spatial information. It is possible to improve the position of an extracted lane or generate a depth map image using a vanishing point in the road space. In this paper, we propose a method of detecting vanishing points on images taken from a vehicle's point of view using Deep Neural Network (DNN) and Histogram of Oriented Gradient (HoG). The proposed algorithm is divided into a HoG feature extraction step, in which the edge direction is extracted by dividing an image into blocks, a DNN learning step, and a test step. In the learning stage, learning is performed using 2,300 road images taken from a vehicle's point of views. In the test phase, the efficiency of the proposed algorithm using the Normalized Euclidean Distance (NormDist) method is measured.

  • This study was conducted to evaluate the characteristics of exothermic heat and compost generated from decomposition of organic wastes composts were piled up with various sources of raw materials of rice straw, rice husk, human and animal wastes. The duration of generated exothermic heat during compositing process was longer in mixture piles of rice straw/rice husk ratio of 1:1 compared to rice straw alone. Temperature in compost piles added with phosphate as fused superphosphate fertilizer was rapidly increased at the earlier stage of composting and gradually decreased in 30 days compared to the check. pH of compost showed 5.5 at initial piling, however, its peak appeared 8.8 in 10 days with rapidly increasing temperature of compost and maintained around 8.3 after one month. Compost of mixture of rice straw and chicken droppings maintained temperature ranges of 30 to $65^{\circ}C$ for 39 days, compost of rice straw, rice husk and chicken droppings for 69 days, piles of rice straw, rice husk and hog manure for 56 days, mixture of rice straw, rice husk and cow manure for 66 days and compost of rice straw, rice husk and human wastes for 21 days.

  • Recently, manure emissions associated with the numerical increment of the domestic hog-breeding have increased, but it has been banned from ocean dumping by the United Nations Convention in 2012. To find out the site for spraying in large quantity of liquid manure fertilizer, we selected one grass plantation, which has the largest amount of grass production, in Jangsung, South Korea. We spread not only chemical fertilizer but also liquid manure fertilizer on the zoysiagrass plantation and researched the effect on the grass growth and development, soil chemical property, and seepage water of dike. As the test results, spread by compounding chemical fertilizer and liquid manure fertilizer and it is possible to substitute for some chemical fertilizer in terms of nutrients accumulation and the grass growth and development. Additionally, it gives less effects to soil chemical property and is efficacious to effective microorganism growth of soil. Therefore, adding liquid manure fertilizer will lead to reduce almost all the amount of chemical fertilizer usage. It is also expected to help for livestock manure management and to influence reducing the production cost of the grass plantation. However, to spread liquid manure fertilizer contaminates water system. For this reason, monitoring continuously, we need to find out improvement plans of the fertilization method in order to increase the usage of liquid manure fertilizer.

  • Dietary intake of whole grains reduces the incidence of chronic diseases such as obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and cancer. In an earlier study, we showed that Panicum miliaceum L. extract (PME) exhibited the highest anti-lipogenic activity in 3T3-L1 cells among extracts of nine different cereal grains tested. In this study, we hypothesized that PME in the diet would lead to weight loss and augmentation of hyperlipidemia by regulating fatty acid metabolism. PME was fed to ob/ob mice at 0%, 0.5%, or 1% (w/w) for 4 weeks. After the experimental period, body weight changes, blood serum and lipid profiles, hepatic fatty acid metabolism-related gene expression, and white adipose tissue (WAT) fatty acid composition were determined. We found that the 1% PME diet, but not the 0.5%, effectively decreased body weight, liver weight, and blood triglyceride and total cholesterol levels (P < 0.05) compared to obese ob/ob mice on a normal diet. Hepatic lipogenic-related gene ($PPAR{\alpha}$, L-FABP, FAS, and SCD1) expression decreased, whereas lipolysis-related gene (CPT1) expression increased in animals fed the 1% PME diet (P < 0.05). Long chain fatty acid content and the ratio of C18:1/C18:0 fatty acids decreased significantly in adipose tissue of animals fed the 1% PME diet (P < 0.05). Serum inflammatory mediators also decreased significantly in animals fed the 1% PME diet compared to those of the ob/ob control group (P < 0.05). These results suggest that PME is useful in the chemoprevention or treatment of obesity and obesity-related disorders.

  • Nine monoclonal antibodies directed against infectious bovine rhinotracheitis virus (IBRV) were prepared by using cell hybridization technique, and the biological properties of the antibodies were investigated by means of immunofluorescence, serum neutralization, and electrophoretic analysis. Eight of 9 monoclonal antibodies reacted specifically with the antigenic constituents of IBRV, infectious laryngotracheitis virus, Marek's disease virus, turkey herpesvirus, hog cholera virus, porcine parvovirus and transmissible gastroenteritis virus. However, the remaining one, 26-2 clone, was found to be cross-reactive with pseudorabies virus. Two monoclonal antibodies, 7-C-2 and 12-A-2, which had neutralizing activity, were reactive with the molecular weights of 72 kilo daltons (72K) and 125K of IBRV proteins electrophoretically separated, respectively. The monoclonal antibody, 3-H-3, which is corresponding to 94K of IBRV proteins, revealed no neutralizing activity. The cross-reactive monoclonal antibody, 26-2, was proved by electrophoretical analysis to be reactive with 100K of IBRV proteins and 40K of pseudorabies virus.

  • The seeding sources and concentration of ammonia on anaerobic digestion were investigated by batch culture bioreactors. The sources of seeding on anaerobic digestion were from swine wastewater collection pit of a hog raising farm and from anaerobic digestion sludge of a municipal sewage treatment plant. The inhibition of ammonia on anaerobic microorganisms was initiated at ammonia concentration of $1,500\;mgNH_4-N/L$ and it's effect was increased by increased by increasing ammonia concentration up to $3,500\;mgNH_4-N/L$ regardless the sources of seeding as evidenced by decreases in COD removal efficiencies and biogas yields. The inhibition occurred to not only methanogens but also acidogens since the concentration of volatile fatty acids was maintained at 50 mg/L The COD removal efficiency and biogas yield were Maintained constantly while increasing ammonia concentration up to $3,500\;mgNH_4-N/L$ when swine wastewater collection pit was used as a seeding; however, those were decreased while increasing ammonia concentration when anaerobic digestion sludge was used as a seeding. The results indicate that the seeding acclimated to high concentrations of ammonia for long time was easy in adaptation to high ammonia concentration and less subjective to ammonia inhibitory effects.

  • Three viral strains, causing CPE in porcine alveolar macrophage cell, were isolated from aborted fetus, serum from young pig showing blue-ear sign and lung of suspected pig, respectively. The differential diagnostic results showed no characteristics of Aujeszky's disease virus(ADV), hog cholera virus (HCV), Japanese encephalitis virus(JEV), porcine parvovirus(PPV) and encephalomyocarditis virus (EMCV). However, positive reactions were demonstrated by IFA using monospecific porcine antibodies against Lelystad virus. When the paired sera of experimentally inoculated swine with one of isolate, KPRRSV-l were tested by IPMA, the result indicated that the isolate was related to United States isolate than European LV.
