Di-(2-ethylhexyl) Phthalate (DEHP) and Uterine Histological Characteristics

  • Phthalates and those metabolites have long history in industry and suspected to have deficient effects in development and reproduction. These are well-known anti-androgenic chemicals and many studies have examined the effects of these compounds on male reproduction as toxins and endocrine disruptors. Uterus is a key organ for proper embryo development, successful reproduction, and health of eutherian mammals including women. To understand the effects of the phthalate, the horizontal approach with a whole group of phthalate is best but the known phthalates are huge and all is not uncovered. Di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) is the most common product of plasticizers in polymer products and studied many groups. Although, there is limited studies on the effects of phthalates on the female, a few studies have proved the endocrine disrupting characters of DEHP or phthalate mixture in female. An acute and high dose of DEHP has adverse effects on uterine histological characters. Recently, it has been revealed that a chronical low-dose exposing of DEHP works as endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDC). DEHP can induce various cellular responses including the expression regulation of steroid hormone receptors, transcription factors, and paracrine factors. Interestingly, the response of uterus to DEHP is not monotonous and the exposed female has various phenotypes in fertility. These suggest that the exposing of DEHP may causes of histological modification in uterus and of disease in female such as endometriosis, hyperplasia, and myoma in addition to developmental and reproductive toxicity.

간유(肝兪)(BL18) 및 곡지(曲池)(LI11) 산삼약침 처치가 비만쥐의 지질구성, cytokine, 간장기능, 항산화능에 미치는 영향 (Effects of cultivated wild ginseng pharmacopuncture at Gansoo (BL18) and Gokji (LI11) on lipid composition, cytokine level, liver function and antioxidative capacity in diet-induced obese rats)

  • Objevtives & Methods : Effects of cultivated wild ginseng pharmacopuncture at BL18 and LI11 on lipid composition, cytokine level, liver function, anti-oxidative capacity and histological characters were investigated in diet-induced obese rats. Forty male Sprague-Dawley rats weighing about 400g were divided into 4 groups of control, BL18, LI11 and BL18 plus LI11 pharmacopuncture groups and raised for 4 weeks. Results : 1. Plasma ${\beta}$-lipoprotein, free fatty acids level and TNF-${\alpha}$ levels significantly decreased in the pharmacopuncture groups compared to those of no treatment group. Plasma and liver total cholesterol, triglyceride, glucose and thiobarbituric acid reactive substance (TBARS) levels were also significantly lower than those of no treatment group. There was, however, no difference in TBARS level among pharmacopuncture groups. Liver total cholesterol level of BL18 pharmacopuncture group was lower than those of the other two pharmacopuncture groups. In LDL-cholesterol level, BL18 pharmacopuncture and BL18 plus LI11 pharmacopuncture groups only had significantly lower levels than that of no treatment group. 2. There was no significant difference between cultivated wild ginseng pharmacopuncture groups and no treatment group in IL-6, alanine transaminase (ALT), aspartic acid transaminase (AST) levels. 3. Compared with \ those of no treatment group, pharmacopuncture groups had significantly higher levels of HDL-cholesterol, superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) and catalase activities. There was, however, no significant difference among pharmacopuncture groups. 4. Histological characters of heart, kidney and liver of BL18 pharmacopuncture group were similar to those of normal rats. Conclusions : These results indicate that cultivated wild ginseng pharmacopuncture at BL18 and LI11 may suppress adipose tissue mass and lipid peroxidation and activate antioxidant system.

Validity of patient-derived xenograft mouse models for lung cancer based on exome sequencing data

  • Patient-derived xenograft (PDX) mouse models are frequently used to test the drug efficacy in diverse types of cancer. They are known to recapitulate the patient characteristics faithfully, but a systematic survey with a large number of cases is yet missing in lung cancer. Here we report the comparison of genomic characters between mouse and patient tumor tissues in lung cancer based on exome sequencing data. We established PDX mouse models for 132 lung cancer patients and performed whole exome sequencing for trio samples of tumor-normal-xenograft tissues. Then we computed the somatic mutations and copy number variations, which were used to compare the PDX and patient tumor tissues. Genomic and histological conclusions for validity of PDX models agreed in most cases, but we observed eight (~7%) discordant cases. We further examined the changes in mutations and copy number alterations in PDX model production and passage processes, which highlighted the clonal evolution in PDX mouse models. Our study shows that the genomic characterization plays complementary roles to the histological examination in cancer studies utilizing PDX mouse models.

  • 수간(樹幹) 둘레를 철사(鐵絲)로 결체(結締)함에 따라 인위적(人爲的)인 피해(被害)를 받으므로써 형성(形成)된 아까시나무(Robinia pseudoacacia L.) 종양재(腫瘍材)의 조직학적(組織學的) 특성(特性)을 고찰(考察)하고 아울러 정상재(正常材)와의 그 특성(特性) 차이(差異)를 구명(究明)하기 위하여 본(本) 연구(硏究)를 실시(實施)하였다. 종양재(腫瘍材)는 일부(一部) 관공(管孔) 및 대부분(大部分)의 목섬유(木纖維)와 방사조직(放射組織)이 정상배열(正常配列)에서 이탈(離脫)된 불규칙적(不規則的)인 배열(配列)을 이루고 있는 점, 횡단면상(橫斷面上)의 관공(管孔)이 다소 방사방향(放射方向)으로 신당(伸張)되어 있는 점, 선단(先端)이 굴곡(屈曲)된 목섬유(木纖維)가 방사단면상(放射斷面上)의 방사조직(放射組織) 사이에서 가끔 관찰(觀察)되는 점, 방사조직(放射組織)의 폭(幅)과 높이가 더 큰 점, 방사단면상(放射斷面上)의 목섬유(木纖維)가 서로 교착배열(交錯配列)을 이루고 있는 점, 추재부(秋材部)의 복합관공(複合管孔) 출현(出現) 빈도(頻度)가 더 큰 점, 젤라틴목섬유(木纖維)의 발달(發達)이 더 일반적(一般的)인 점 및 농색(濃色)의 검(gum)상물질(狀物質)이 국부적(局部的)으로 목섬유(木纖維), 방사조직(放射組織), 축방향유세포(軸方向柔細胞)의 내강(內腔)에 발달(發達)되어 있는 점에 있어서 정상재(正常材)와의 조직(組織) 특성(特性) 차이(差異)를 나타내었다.

실리콘비삽입물 표면의 석회화: 부위별 석회침착물의 특성 (Calcification on the Surface of Silicone Nasal Implants: Regional Properties of Calcification Deposits)

  • The silicone rubber implants are widely used in plastic surgery because of various advantages; however, calcification in surface of implant(as a chemical resistance) may transform or destroy the high molecular biomaterial when it stays too long within the human body. The purpose of this study is to determine the relationship between calcification and the histological disparities of the tissues surrounding the area adjoining the silicone nasal implant by examining the regional characteristics of calcium deposits in the silicone nasal implant via elemental analyses using EDX(energy-dispersive X-ray analysis) and ultrastructural analyses using SEM(scanning electron microscopy). The subjects of the study were 19 silicone nasal implants removed by revision rhinoplasty, all displaying calcification. According to the tissue characters, the implant surface was divided into 4 zones with the rhinion as the basis. For each zone, elemental and ultrastructural analyses were performed. Elemental analysis revealed that the calcium deposits consisted of Ca and P only. There were no statistically significant disparities among the ratios between Ca and P according to the zones. Ultrastructural analysis showed acellular mineral-like deposits coalesced to create amorphous deposits in all zones; however, in zones 1 and 3(more pressurized zones by periosteum or nasal bone), additional flaky cylinder-shaped calcium deposits were detected. Thus, it seems that the histological disparities in the surrounding tissues do not affect the components and their proportions in the calcification process. However, it can be inferred that the physical environment due to the histological disparities in the surrounding tissues affects the ultrastructures of calcium deposits.

북한강 엷은재첩, Corbicula papyracea (Heude) 의 번식생태 (Reproductive Ecology of the Freshwater Marsh Clam, Corbicula papyracea (Heude) in Bukhan River)

  • 북한강에 서식하고 있는 엷은재첩의 산란생태를 파악하기 위하여, 생식소 발달단계에 따른 생식주기, 군성숙도, 난경의 월별변화를 조사하였다. 각장에 대한 각고, 각폭, 전중, 육중간 의 상대성장식에서 상관계수 ($R^2$) 는 0.921-0.984로 높은 상관관계를 나타내었다. 엷은재첩은 기수재첩 보다는 소형종이었으며, 동시자웅동체로서 체내에서 수정되어 아가미 보육낭에서 부화되어 체외로 방출하는 난태생종이었다. 월별 비만도는 0.14-0.21 범위로 동계인 12월-2월에 낮은 값을 보이다가 2월부터 서서히 높아지기 시작하여 5월에 0.21로 정점을 보였다. 월별 육중량비는 25.9-38.7%로 비만도의 월별 변화와 같은 경향을 나타내었다. 비만도와 육중량비의 정점이 생식세포의 최성숙기와 1-2개월 차이가 있었다. 생식소의 조직상, 비만도 및 생식세포의 월별 변화를 종합하면 북한강산 엷은재첩 생식년주기는 분열증식기(12-2월), 성장기(2-5월), 성숙기(6-8월), 완숙 및 발생기(8-11월), 회복기(11-12월) 로 구분되어 하계산란종이었다. 군성숙 각장은 12.6 mm 였으며, 16 mm 이상의 개체는 모두 성숙하여 아가미에 보육낭을 형성하였다.

Organ Surface Primo Vessel의 감별특성에 대한 문헌고찰 - 김봉한의 논문을 중심으로 (Publication Review about Discriminative Characteristics of Organ Surface Primo Vessel Based on Kim Bonghan's Paper)

  • Objectives : The Primo system is a hypothesis on the new circulation system. It orginates from Bonghan theory. Bonghan theory is about the anatomical substance of acupuncture point and meridian system. It has been regarded as a misunderstanding of the lymphatic system or as a made-up story for the past 40 years. Since 2002, many studies have been published either to support the theory or to refute the old viewpoint. But there are still difficulties about the proper sampling. The purpose of this study is to find out the discriminative criteria of Organ Surface Primo sytem by reviewing the Kim Bonghan's publications. Methods : Abstract of description about the Organ Surface Primo system in 5 publications of Kim Bonghan are weighted by the reverse order of publication. Results and Conclusions : 6 characters of anatomical structure and 11 characters of histological structure are founded as repeated descriptions. We hope that this summarized characteristics would be a good guide to Primo system experiments.

비중격에 발생한 신경섬유종의 내시경적 비내 수술 치험 1예 (A Neurofibroma arising from nasal septum)

  • Neurofibroma is a neurogenic tumor arising from schwann cells or peripheral tissues of nerve sheaths. Neurofibroma rarely occurs as a solitary lesion but mostly occurs as part of neurofibromatosis and reports of neurofibromas developed in the nasal cavity or paranasal sinus are very rare. We report on a case of neurofibroma of the nasal cavity treated by endoscopic surgery. Preoperative computed tomography(CT), and punch biopsy suggested that the tumor was benign neurogenic tumor cofined to right nasal cavity. The tumor was removed with endoscopic surgery completely, and confirmed as neurofibroma by histological and immunohistochemical examination. We discuss the clinical and pathological characters of neurofibroma arising in the nasal septum.

돌마자 Microphysogobio yaluensis(Cypriniformes, Cyprinidae) 후각기관의 구조 및 조직학적 특성 연구 (Structure and Histological Characters of the Olfactory Organ in Korean Endemic Fish, Microphysogobio yaluensis (Cypriniformes, Cyprinidae))

  • 한국 고유종 돌마자 Microphysogobio yaluensis의 후각기관과 서식처 및 생태와의 연관성을 알아보기 위해 실체 현미경과 광학현미경을 이용하여 구조 및 조직학적 특징을 조사하였다. 후각기관은 외부적으로 전비공, 후비공 그리고 비경계판으로 구성되어 있으며, 내부는 22~24개의 후판들과 비선으로 구성되었다. 후판은 감각상피와 비감각상피로 이루어져 있는데, 감각상피는 후감각신경, 지지세포, 기저세포들로 구성되었으며, 비감각상피는 층상상피세포, 비감각섬모세포, 산성과 중성을 갖는 황점액소의 점액세포들로 구성되어 있다. 이러한 후각기관들의 특징들은 돌마자의 높은 후각능력과 의존성 그리고 서식처 환경에 밀접한 관계가 있을 것으로 생각되며 분류학적 연구에도 활용될 수 있을 것으로 생각된다.

송어를 감염원으로한 광절열두조충 인체감염 (Two Human Cases of Diphyllobothrium latum Infection through Eating Raw Freshwater Trout, Salmo gairdneri)

  • 최근 한국에 있어서 광절열두조충 감염예가 가끔 보고되고 있다. 저자등은 1994년 10월 강원도 춘천시 거주 남녀 부부가 함께 담수산 송어회를 먹고 감염된 2예에 대하여 보고하는 바이다. 구충은 하제로서 Magnesium sulfate 15gm, 구충제 Praziquantel 15mg/kg를 투여하였다. 제1예는 인ㅇㅇ, 43세 남자, 69kg의 건강체였으며, 구충하여 얻은 충체의 길이 6.65m, 폭 8-13mm였다. 제2예는 최ㅇㅇ, 39세 여자, 56kg으로 소화불량, 복부 불쾌감을 호소하였고, 구충하여 얻은 충체는 5.50m, 폭 8-13mm이었다. 2예 모두에서 두부는 검출되지 않았다. 구충하여 얻은 충체의 외관상 형태, 자궁의 선회, 자궁분지(uterine loops)의 수, 생식공의 위치와 절단표본상 음경낭과 저정낭의 형태, 질의 위치, 자궁구의 위치등과 충란을 광학현미경으로 관찰 한 형태, 크기 및 SEM으로 관찰한 표피의 작은 점각(pits)의 유무, 분포 등 형태학적인 특징등으로 Diphyllobothrium latum으로 동정하였다. 이번의 인체 감염은 담수산 송어회가 원인이 된 것으로 믿어지는 예이다.
