The osteoporosis is a disease characterized by lower bone mineral content, deterioration of bone tissue and a reduction in the protein and mineral matrix of the bone. The bone becomes more porous leading to increased bone fragility and risk of fracture, particularly of the hip, spine and wrist. Osteoporosis can result in disfigurement, lowered self·esteem, reduction or loss of mobility, and decreased independence. Adequate calcium intake through milk and milk products in childhood and adolescence is a decisive marker for obtaining a maximum bone mass (peak adult bone mass) and f3r the prevention of osteoporosis. Calcium is one of the most critical nutrients associated with the osteoporosis. Dietary calcium is of great significance for healthy skeletal growth and development. The bone mineral content and bone mineral density of young adults is directly related to the calcium intake through milk and dairy products. Milk and milk products are the important sources of calcium as the richness and bioavailability of this nutrient is very high as compared to other food products. If enough calcium is not supplemented through diet, calcium from the bone will be depleted to maintain the blood plasma calcium level. The article focuses on the various issues related to osteoporosis manifestation and the role of dietary calcium especially calcium derived from dairy products.

Twenty-nine cases of unicameral bone cyst developed in long bone of children have been treated and followed up for 4.5 years in average form Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, Guro Hospital, Korea University, College of Medicine since September, 1983, Treatment for those lesions differed to form largely two groups, one of which consised of insillation of Methyl-prednisolone for non-weight bearing bones(12 humeri) and the other of curettage and autogenous bone graft for weight-bearing bones(7 femur). Methl-prednisolone group required repetition of instillation for 3.5 time in average spanning over 4 years until cloudy obliteration occurs. Curettage and bone graft had healed in 3 year 6 months' time in average. There were neither recurrence nor pathologic fractures of the lesions with the latter group. Immobilization period was virtually non with Methyl-prednisolone group and 4-6 weeks by hip spica with curettage and bone graft group. As conclusions, It seems confirmed that treatment strategy of unicameral bone cyst consisted of Methyl-prednisolone instillation for humerus lesions and early curettage and bone graft for femur lesions is applicable as guideline having solid ground in clinical experiences.
The direction of the applied load and displacement rate on the femur during falls may be an important factors in the etiology of hip fractures. Nonetheless, previous studies did not consider these two factors simultaneously for falling condition. Therefore, in the present study, an impact test system is developed to simulate the falling condition and the influence of impact angle on the deformation pattern changes of proximal femur is investigated. The results showed that a slight variation in impact angle quite affects deformation pattern of the proximal femur. Along with bone mineral density and trabaecular morphology, the impact angle can be another important factor affecting the structural capacity of the proximal femur.
Purpose: Heterotopic ossification in pressure sore patients is reported to rarely develop, but once it occurs, it frequently causes joint stiffness and mobilization restriction. The aim of this article is to report our experience of atypical bone growing at femur neck fracture site with chronic, extensive pressure sore in patient with paraplegia secondary to spinal injury. Methods: A 28-year-old male patient presented with atypical bone growth at femur neck fracture site with pressure sore. He had undergone atypical growth bone removal and separation of united iliac bone and femur, and then pressure sore was covered by advanced rotation flap. Results: The patient mobilized hip joint and rode in a wheelchair. Complications such as dehiscence, infection, hematoma and flap necrosis did not occur. Conclusion: We experienced successful correction of atypical bone growth removal and recovery of pressure sore. We report our experience of atypical bone growth of fracture site and the related literature was reviewed.
In this study, four algorithms (Soft, Standard, Detail, Bone) were used for general CT scan (Before MAR) images and MAR (After MAR) images for patients with metal implants inserted into the hip joint. was applied to compare and analyze Noise, SNR, and CNR to find out the optimal algorithm for quantitative evaluation. As the analysis method, Image J program, which can calculate image analysis and area and pixel values on the image reconstructed with four algorithms, was used. In order to obtain Noise, SNR, and CNR, the HU mean value and HU SD value were obtained by designating the bone (ischium) closest to the metal implant in the image for the measurement site, and the background noise was the surrounding muscle. The region of interest (ROI) was equally designated as 15 × 15 mm in consideration of the size of the bone, and the values of SNR and CNR were calculated according to the given equation. As a result, for noise, After MAR and Soft algorithms showed the lowest noise, and SNR and CNR showed the highest for Before MAR and Soft algorithms. Therefore, the soft algorithm is judged to be the most appropriate algorithm for metal implant hip joint CT.

The lesions around hip joint including bone, joint and soft tissue can cause the pain. For diagnosis of these lesions, physical examination and simple X-ray were accomplished primarily. Some special cases, CT or MRI was a useful tool. However ultrasonography could provide non-invasive and dynamic images for the lesions of tendon and bursa, and it could be a useful tool for follow up after hip surgery. Due to the deep location of hip joint, ultrasonography is not easy for physician to examine and its application was impossible in some obese patients. This article deals with the normal and pathologic ultrasonographic findings of the hip joint and various applications using ultrasonography.
The bone mineral density(vertebrae Ll-4, femoral neck, Ward's triangle and trochanter) of 160 healthy adult women aged 29-45 was measured and general characteristics, anthropomentric measurements, and dietary intake were also studied to determine the main factors affecting the bone mineral density(BMD) of adult women. The nutrient intake of the subjects was adequate to RDA level except energy, Ca, Fe, and vit A. The BMD of vertebrae L24 showed significant positive association with nutrient intake such as animal protein, P, Ca(animal) and Fe(animal). The BMD of the femoral neck correlated significantly with anthropometric measurements such as height, weight, waist circumference, hip circumference, body fat and body mass index. The BMD of both sites(vertebrae L24 and femoral neck) were significantly related to vertebrae L24 was daily Ca intake and that of femoral neck was daily energy expenditure. In conclusion, adequate nutrient intake, especially protein, P, Ca and Fe as well as increases in physical activity were suggested to prevent the loss of bone mineral density in adult women.
An extremely unusual case of epidermoid cyst showing diffuse parakeratosis and aggressive clinical behavior is presented. A destructive bone lesion with surrounding ill-defined soft tissue lesion was found by computed tomography in a 63 year-old man complaining of painful swelling of the right buttock. He had a history of surgical excision twice for epidermoid cysts of soft tissue of the right hip during recent one year On aspiration cytology, the aspirate was highly cellular and mostly composed of desquamated nucleated squamous cells. Operation finding revealed that the iliac bone was Irregularly destroyed and filled with gray-white cheesy material and necrotic bone bedris. Adjacent gluteus muscle showed scattered gray-white lesions. The curettage specimen showed bone necrosis and desquamated squamous cells filling the marrow spaces. The lesion within muscle revealed epidermoid cyst with diffuse parakeratosis.
This study is concerned with the shape optimization of stem for the artificial hip prosthesis with unbonded cement mantle. The artificial hip prosthesis with unbonded cement mantle allows a stem to slip on cement mantle because of polished stem surface. Unbonded cement mantle type has several advantages compared with bonded cement mantle type, for example, small micro motion, preventing stress shielding and so on. In this study, 2-dimensional axisymmetric model was developed with considering characteristics of unbonded cement mantle. Moreover, optimal shape of stem was obtained by using feasible direction method. The objective of this optimization is maximizing supported vertical loading. The slip motion and stresses of stem, cement mantle and bone is used for constraints. The optimal shape which obtained by this study has slope of 0.15 in proximal part and maintains the width about 5mm in distal part In addition, simplified 3-dimensional analysis which applying optimal shape is carried out. The result of 3-dimensional analysis showed that optimal shape has some advantages for cement mantle stress. However, more realistic 3-dimensional analysis which including bending effect, complex geometries etc. is needed in further research.

Purpose: This study aimed to identify the incidence and risks for pressure ulcer among older patients with hip fracture. Methods: The subject were 215 older patients suffering from hip fracture who were admitted for surgical operation from January 1, 2012 to April 30, 2016 in a university-affiliated hospital. The incidence of pressure ulcer was collected retrospectively through medical record review and the risk factors were analyzed using Cox's proportional hazard model. Results: Out of the total, 32 patients (14.9%) developed pressure ulcer with the average occurrence period being 4.72 (${\pm}3.81$) days. Stage II pressure ulcer was the most common at 72.0%. Risk factors included ambulation status before injury (p= .039), spinal anesthesia (p= .029), and stay at intensive care unit after operation (p= .009). Conclusion: Despite pressure ulcer prevention efforts, the incidence remained relatively high. Considering the identified risk factors, more efforts is needed for early detection and prevention of pressure ulcers in such patients.
