This study was conducted to investigate the leaf growth and flowering characteristics of 85 Hosta cultivars. The 85 cultivars were grown in a pot in Useful Plant Resources Center in Yangpyeong, Korea. H. 'Abiqua Blue Crinkles', H. 'Abiqua Drinking Gourd', H. 'Dancing in the Rain', H. 'Elegance', H. 'Inniswood', and H. 'Venus' were classified as a large size group (> 50 cm), while 27 cultivars including H. 'Abby', H. 'Birchwood Parky's Gold', H. 'Blue Cadet', and H. 'Blue Edge' were classified as a small size group (< 20 cm). The others were classified as a medium size groups. 79% of Hosta cultivars had leaf variegation. Leaf variegation type was divided into 5 types (standard, marginata, mediovarigata, albomaculata, striata). Among them 31 cultivars including H. 'Abby', H. 'Abiqua Moonbeam', and H. 'Atlantis' has a variegation type of marginata in the leaf. 36 cultivars including H. 'Abby', H. 'Abiqua Drinking Gourd', and H.'Abiqua Moonbeam' bloomed in late May and 9 cultivars including H. 'Black Hills', H. 'Boeun', and H. 'Fragrant Bouquet' started to flower on late August. Most flowers were below 3.0 cm in length, while H. 'Avocado' was longest on 10.0 cm. Most flowers have a lavender color group (63.5%), and 14 cultivars of Hosta showed white color group (16.5%). 12 cultivars including H. 'Blue Mouse Ears', H. 'Captain Kirk', and H. 'Fragrant Bouquet' had the fragrance in their flowers. H. 'Cherry Berry' and H. 'Revolution' had a colorful stalk, red and yellow, respectively.
Cherwon Castle is located in Pungcheonwon, Cherwon, in the center of the Korean Peninsula. Currently, it is split across the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) between the two Koreas. It attracts attention as a symbol of inter-Korean reconciliation and as cultural heritage that serves as data in making important policy decisions on the DMZ. Despite its importance, however, there has not been sufficient investigation and research done on Cherwon Castle. This is due to the difficulty involved in investigation and research and is caused by the site's inaccessibility. As a solution, the current investigative methods in satellite and aerial archeology can be applied to interpret and analyze the structure of Cherwon Castle and the features of its inner space zoning. Cherwon Castle was built on the five flat hills that begin in the northern mountainous hills and stretch to the southwest. The inner and outer walls were built mainly on the hilly ridges, and the palace wall was built surrounding a flat site that was created on the middle hill. For each wall, the sites of the old gates, which were erected in various directions , have been identified. They seem to have been built to fit the direction of buildings in the castle and the features of the terrain. The castle was built in a diamond shape. The old sites of the palace and related buildings and landforms related to water drainage were identified. It was verified that the roads and the gates were built to run from east to west in the palace. In the spaces of the palace and the inner castle, flat sites were created to fit different landforms, and building sites were arranged there. Moreover, the contour of a reservoir that is believed to be the old site of a pond has been found; it lies on the vertical extension of the center line that connects the palace and the inner castle. Between the inner castle and the outer castle, few vestiges of old buildings were found, although many flat sites were discovered. Structurally, Cherwon Castle is rotated about nine degrees to the northeast, forming a planar rectangle. The planar structure derives from the castle design that mimics the hilly landform, and the bending of the southwestern wall also attests to the intention of the architects to avoid the wetland. For now, it is impossible to clearly describe the functions and characters of the building sites inside the castle. However, it is believed that the inner castle was marked out for space for the palace and government offices, while the space between the outer and inner castle was reserved as the living space for ordinary people. The presence of the hilly landform diminishes the possibility that a bangri (grid) zoning system existed. For some of the landforms, orderly zoning cannot be ruled out, as flat areas are commonly seen. As surveys have yet to be conducted on the different castles, the time when the walls were built and how they were constructed cannot be known. Still, the claim to that the castle construction and the structuring of inner spaces were inspired by the surrounding landforms is quite compelling.
Low-density transplanting is a cultivation technology that reduces labor and production costs. In this study, the growth and yield of several varieties with different tillering characteristics were analyzed in order to establish an appropriate planting density for low-density transplanting. Varieties with Low-Tillering (LT), Medium-Tillering (MT), and High-Tillering (HT) were planted at a density of 37-80 hills/3.3 m2. As the planting density decreased, the number of tillers per hill increased, but the number of tillers per square meter of hill decreased, especially for the LT variety. Decreasing density extended the tillering stage, which was longest in the LT variety. As the planting density decreased, SPAD(Soil plant analysis development, chlorophyll meter) values just before heading increased while canopy light interception decreased. Such changes were much greater in the LT variety than in the MT and HT varieties. The heading date tended to be delayed by 0-2 days as the planting density decreased, and there was no difference in the length of the period from first heading to full heading. As the number of spikelets per panicle increased, the number of spikelets per square meter did not differ according to the planting density. Decreasing planting density did not affect the grain weight; nevertheless, the yield ultimately decreased because of the decreasing ripening rate. The optimal planting density for stable low-density transplanting cultivation was determined to be over 50 hills/3.3 m2. In addition, these results suggest that LT varieties should be avoided, since these showed large decreases in growth and yield with decreasing planting density.
Up to now, the studies for a pond of ancient palace of Korea are mainly achieved in a landscape architectural field. In fact, we can't grasp the general aspects but we are only heard about the fragmentary ruins and remains by the people who are in charge of an archaeological excavation. In this thesis, therefore, I attempt to grasp the relational categories of the ponds of an ancient palace of Korea, and find out the ideological backgrounds of the ponds of a palace construction through classify them excavated so far. The ancient ponds of Korea are divided to the class of square ponds(I) and curved ponds(II) according a shapes of planes. The class of square ponds(I) are subdivided to the form IA of the class of square ponds and form IB of the class of square ponds by whether it has an island, artificial hill and ornamental stone or not. And the class of the curved ponds(II) are divided to the form IIC that is only composed of curves in shore and the form IID that is composed of curves and straight lines. According the size, it is divided to a small size that is below the maximal diameter, 20m, and a large size that is more than 45m, after all, the ponds of the ancient palaces are devided to IAa, IAb, IBa, II Ca, IICb, IIDa. The square ponds and the curved ponds are co-exist from the initial stage when a pond of a place was found in our country and are succeeded or changed after Silla unified the three Kingdoms. In other words, we can infer a continuity from the earlier stage from the fact that there is a flat figure ground mainly constituted by the ponds of a palace mixed up of a straight line and a curved line in United Silla Kingdom while it succeeds the ponds of a palace that has a square form of Goguryo in Balhai. Different from the successional relation of the flat figure grounds, in an aspect of the elements of the construction, the site of the arbor at the top of the island and the bridge facilities in a field of a palace those are not exist in three Kingdoms period are appeared in United Silla Kingdom. The point that this aspect is simultaneously appeared in a neighboring country, or Japan, allows us to infer that there may be some motivations cause the changes in a construction of the ponds of a palace of Korea, China and Japan from the latter half of the 7th century to the first half of the 8th century. The ideological backgrounds of the ponds of a palace construction are divided roughly into Taoism and Buddhism. We can recognize that the ponds of a palace made up of the islands, the artificial hills and the garden rocks reflect Taiosm, considering the records of the ponds a palace of Korea and China are all use the term, Taoism, or the concrete statement represents that the islands, the artificial hills and the garden rocks are used in the description of the ponds of a palace of Korea. Both two are, therefore, obviously differentiated from the ponds of a palace that doesn't include them. We can conclude that the ponds of a palace that doesn't include them are colored by Buddhism since they are overtly distinguished from the class of curved ponds that reflect Taoism at the same period and they are identical with the site of an ancient temples in an aspect of their type and construction.

If there is no choice but to be urbanized, we should examine how human interference has had influences on the area to keep the river environment safe and stable. This study is aimed at finding improvement by examining the effect of human interference in Gapcheon river in Daejeon, which is developing fast. Distinctive features of human interference in Gapcheon river are followings. First, middle and upper reaches of Gapcheon river are being maintained and restored focusing on flood control but are scheduled to develop city and channel. Second, the rear area of middle and lower reaches of Gapcheon river is already developed into an urban district and solidified into artificial stream for leisure activities installing the artificial structure for fun. Third, lower reaches of Gapcheon river are in an unstable condition because of straightening waterway and developing rear area of river. Up to now, geographical features and bio-diversity of Gapcheon river has been ruined by the artificial management of river centered for technical engineering. From now on, followings should be considered for management of urban river. First, it is focused on maintaining eco system by itself than usage for human. Second, natural features of rear area of river should be taken into consideration and should be preserved before developing urban city and hills, back marsh, channel deposit and swamp to directly have an influence on river.

This study carried out a phytosociological research by Z.-M. school's method describing vegetation structure and management solution about nutmeg tree's(Torreya nucifera ) forests. The nutmeg tree's forests have developed intervale and hills in warm-temperate evergreen broad-leaved forests zone. The nutmeg tree's forests composed 50 familly, 80 genus, 88 species divided two syntaxa(typical sub-community, Arachniodes aristata sub-community) by species composition and correspond to habitat condition. The nutmeg tree's forests show a uniform forest's structure which composed 3~4 layer of sub-tree and shrub. And it was worthy of special mention which characterized diagnostic species of Camellietea japonicae in the warm-temperate evergreen broad-leaved forests. In case of forests floor, were a high rate in order of Ophiopogon japonicus, Polystichum tripteron, Arisaema ringens. And Oplismenus undulatifolius which represent mantle communities as well. This indicates that the nutmeg tree's forests are exposed by humman effects sustainedly. The nutmeg tree's young trees appeared a high rate at half shade and shade. The vigorous tree species have to spacing cutting instead of the heavy thinning that consist in with a shout of declining astructur and function of the forest ecosystem for maintaining a nutmeg tree's forests. And we suggest for the density regulation of the sub-tree and shrub. In conclusion, need to the continuous monitoring about the vegetation structure and management solution for the sustainable nutmeg tree's forests.

A number of the Bronze Age dwelling sites have been found and excavated in the Yoodoocheon, Onyangcheon and Baekseokdong basins. Two basins are located near Asan and Onyan in the Chungnam Province of South Korea. Baekseokdong is located in Cheonan, Chungnam. 207 dwelling sites are concentrated around the area of $1.3km^2$ in the Baekseokdong. 177 dwelling sites are sparse and distributed over the area of $1.3km^2$ in the Yongdoocheon and Onyangcheon basins. Most of the Bronze Age dwelling sites in those areas located on the hill. The hills have similar geomorphological environments except for slight differences in geological faces. This study analyzes geomorphological environments of the high-density residential zone of the Bronze Age in the Yoodoocheon and the Onyangcheon basins, and then compares them with the results in Baekseokdong. Study results show that high-density residential zone consists mainly of specific micro-landforms such as the Crest slope, the Crest flat and the Upper side slope, and southeast-facing aspect. A lot of Gentle slope lands were distributed in terms of terrain slope but it is far from specific geomorphological environments. This is not weighted in specific value. Our results show that the geomorphological characteristic derived from this study is major considerations to develop dwelling sites in the Bronze Age. This can be useful to discover the possible dwelling sites over other Chungnam hill regions.
This study was conducted to find out the basic informations related to the rice cultivation using the infant seedlings. Infant seedlings with different nursery Periods were compared for the growth and grain yield of rice at the National Crop Experiment Station in 1997. The highest sound seedling ratio of 93.9% was observed in 8-day old seedling, followed by 88.9% of 12-day, 82.0% of 16-day, and 80.8% of 20-day, The endosperm remained 52.5% in the 8-day old seedling at transplanting and decreasingly with increasing nursery period. Missing hills at transplanting were more in 16-day and 20-day old seedling than in 8-day and 12-day old seedlings, 5.1-5.2% in 8-day and 12-day growing seedling, 6.7% in 16-day and 7.8% in 20-day old seedling. Rooting ability was observed highest in 8-day, followed by 12-day, 16-day and 20-day old seedling. The milled rice was lower by 5-16% in 12-day, 16-day and 20-day old seedling than in 8-day old seedling of 6.18 t/ha. It was found that the 8-day and 12-day old seedling provided more advantage for sound seedling ratio, endosperm remaining, missing hill during transplanting, rooting ability and grain yields than 16-day and 20-day old seedlings.
A multi-disciplinary geophysical study including gravity, magnetic, and seismic reflection profiling was carried out in the area between the Clarion fracture zone and the Clippertone fracture zone o the northeastern equatorial Pacific basin. There are small free-air gravity anomalies of less than 20 mgal over seamounts and the east-west trending abyssal hills. The negative residual gravity anomalies over seamounts may indicate the existence of low density seamount roots compared to surrounding oceanic crust. Non-existence of magnetic lineations and the magnetic anomalies of small smplitude with no polarity change in the east-west direction support that the study area belongs to the Cretaceous magnetic quite zone. Positive magnetic anomalies over seamounts offset 100 km in the east-west direction in the southern part of the study area suggest a possibility of left-lateral movement of those seamounts along unknown fractures. The sedimentary section in the study area can be divided into three units (Unit I, unit IIA, and Unit IIB) n the basis of reflection characteristics. the total thickness of sedimentary section varies from 200 to 400 meters and the sedimentary section is thicker in the southern area of rough topography near the seamount belt than in the northern flat area. Manganese nodules are abundant in the southern part of the study area where the ridges are developed and the Unit I layer is thicker than 100 meters.
The influence of small urban parks(green ratio is 100%) on the temperature pattern over the urban and its surrounding area was examined by analyzing the case of in and around Changkyeong palace, Changdeok plalace and Jongmyo, Jongro-gu, Seoul. The pattern of temperature over urban parks and their surrounding built-up area was analyzed from September to November 2000, measuring maximum and minimum temperatures with fixed sensors(maximum and minimum thermometer)and real-time temperature depends largely on both the land-use type and the distance from the park border. In the case of maximum temperature, the lowest value appeared on the
green area within parks and the highest value on the built-up area far from the green area. The maximum temperature difference between parks and built-up areas was up to $7.3^{\circ}C$. In the built-up area, the maximum temperature of commercial areas was higher than residential areas. In the night time, not only land-use type but also topography is important for the spatial distributlon of temperature because of the cold airflow from adjacet hills. The horizontal temperature profile by mobile measurement is also related to land-use type and to the distance from the park borders. There is a magnitude of $1^{\circ}C$ temperture difference over a distance of 200m and $3~4^{\circ}C$ over a distance of 400m from the park borders.
