On account of the development of the high speed internal combustion engines, several methods for increasing burning velocity has been investigated lately. Installation of a squash area on a cylinder head is one of the simple and practical method to induce the strong tubulant flow of air-fuel mixtureinto a combustion chamber. In this study, a four-stroke engine used for agricultural purpose was tested as an experimental model. A mathematical model of the squash velocity was derived, and also, several characteristics of the squash phenomena during the motoring of the engine used as a modelwere investigated. The results obtained were as follows: (1) Mathematical model of squash velocity was established and cheked (2) Squaash velocity and engine speed were found to be proportional to the squash area while they were inversely proportional to the squash width. (3) Squash velocity and crank angle at which the squash velocity become its peak were influenced by the magnitude of squash clearance: increase of squash clearance made squash velocity reduced acd made the peak of the squash velocity for from the top dead center and (4) When the squash area is divided in small areas baving unit width along the squash section, squash velocity at each unit width was proportional to the magnitude of the squash distance covered by the unit width.

Computational studies of accelerating flow around 2D Circular Cylinder was performed to investigate characteristics of wake field and drag forces. Previous studies had revealed that drag on the cylindrical body in accelerating flow is much greater than that in the flow with constant velocity; however, the underlying physics on the drag increase has not been clearly investigated. In order to investigate the drag increase and its relationship with wake development, this study employed a finite-volume based CFD code, Fluent 13.0 with k-ω SST model for turbulence effects. Inflows are modeled with varied accelerations from 0.4905 to 9.81m/s2. The drag computed in the present study is in good agreement with previous studies, and clearly shows the increase compared to the drag on the body in the flow with constant velocity. The results also show that drag crisis observed at high Reynolds number in the case of the flow with constant velocity is also found in the case of accelerating flow. The analysis for wake and recirculation length shows that conventional vortex shedding does not occur even at high Reynolds number and the drag increase is larger at higher acceleration.

Land reclamation, coastal construction, coastline extension and port construction, all of which involve dredging, are increasingly required to meet the growing economic and societal demands in the coastal zone. During the land reclamation, a portion of landfills are lost from the desired location due to a variety of causes, and therefore prediction of sediment transport is very important for economical and efficient land reclamation management. In this study, laboratory disposal tests were performed using an open channel, and suspended sediment transport was analyzed according to flow velocity and grain size. The relationships between the average and standard deviation of the deposition distance and the flow velocity were almost linear, and the relationships between the average and standard deviation of deposition distance and the grain size were found to have high non-linearity in the form of power law. The deposition distribution of sediments was demonstrated to have log-normal distributions regardless of the flow velocity. Based on the experimental results, modeling of suspended sediment transport was performed using deep neural network, one of deep learning techniques, and the deposition distribution was reproduced through log-normal distribution.

This paper suggests fur the study on a fluid velocity measuring system using ultrasonic transducer. In general, the time difference method to measure the distance between transducers has been known. In this paper, the practical technology for manufacturing ultrasonic flow meter system is studied using the time difference method. The ultrasonic transducer was designed and manufactured. The transmission and receiving algorithm for ultrasonic signal was studied. The ultrasonic flow measuring system was experimented in laboratory using a water reservoir for verifying the distance measuring accuracy. Finally, it was tested in flow calibration laboratory for the velocity measuring performance. The system, designed in this study, showed 0.3 mm resolution in distance measurement. For precise flow measurement, a high speed triggering algorithm is required for ultrasonic signal receiving.
The characteristics of upward bubble flow were experimentally investigated in a liquid bath. In the present study, a thermal-infrared camera and high speed CCO camera were used to measure their temperature and local rising velocity, respectively. Heat transfer from bubble surface to water is largely completed within z=10mm from the nozzle, and then the temperature of bubble surface reaches that of water rapidly. The rising velocity of bubble was calculated for two different experimental conditions: 1) bubble flow without kinetic energy 2) with kinetic energy. Bubble flow without kinetic energy starts to undergo the effect of inertia force 10cm away from the nozzle. Whereas, kinetic energy is dominant before 30 cm away from the nozzle in bubble flow, but after this point, kinetic energy and inertial force are applied on bubble flow at the same time.

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the relationship between pressure recovery and turbulent characteristic value of velocity and pressure, in the case where a swirling flow streams into a conical diffuser. The results of both measurements of the wall pressure fluctuation and velocity fluctuation revealed them to role the large part of the total pressure loss of the flow. The cause of the fluctuation of flow was showed to be the flow separation at the inlet of diffuser at low intensity of swirl, but the flow of diffuser center was instable at high intensity of swirl. The static pressure recovery depends strongly on the magnitude of the turbulent energy in the diffuser, and that this magnitude of the turbulent energy varies as the intensity of swirl at the diffuser inlet.
Numerical simulations are conducted for laminar flow past a sphere rotating In the transverse direction, in order to investigate the effect of the rotation on the characteristics of flow over a sphere. The Reynolds numbers considered are Re=100, 250 and 300 based on the free-stream velocity and the sphere diameter, and the rotational speeds are in the range of $0{\leq}{\omega}{\leq}1$, where ${\omega}^{\ast}$ is the maximum velocity on the sphere surface normalized by the free-stream velocity. At ${\omega}^{\ast}=0$ (without rotation), the flow past the sphere experiences steady axisymmeoy, steady planar-symmetry and unsteady planar-symmetry, respectively, at Re=100, 250 and 300. However, with rotation, the flow becomes planar-symmetric for all the cases investigated and the symmetry plane is orthogonal to the axis of the rotation. The flow is also steady or unsteady depending on both the Reynolds number and the rotational speed, and the vortical structures behind the sphere are significantly modified by the rotation. For example, at Re=300, hairpin vortices completely disappear in the wake at ${\omega}^{\ast}=0.4\;and\;0.6$, and at ${\omega}^{\ast}=1$ vortical structures of a high frequency are newly generated due to the shear layer instability. It is also shown that with increasing rotational speed, the time-averaged drag and lift coefficients increase monotonically.
Using magnetic field and plasma moment data obtained by THEMIS satellites(A, D, and E), we selected 203 fast flow events accompanied by dipolarization in the near-Earth region( X(GSM) = -7 ~ -12 RE) and statistically examined their properties. It was found that most of the fast flows show the maximum velocity between 1 minute before dipolarization onset and 2 minutes after onset and proceed earthward and duskward. We also found that only the flows with low velocity of less than 400 km/s are observed at X > -8 RE, while the high velocity flows(as well as low velocity flows) are observed at the further tailward region(X < -8 RE). And most of the tailward flows are slow regardless of distance at X(GSM) = -7 ~ -12 RE. On the other hand, if we consider the fast flow as a bubble (Pontius and Wolf, 1990), the entropy parameter, PV5/3 is an important factor to describe the plasma sheet dynamics. Thus we investigated the relationship between the flow velocity and the amount of change in PV5/3 before and after dipolarization onset and found out that the dipolarizations with more depleted entropy parameter tend to show higher flow velocity. Also we examined how the magnetic field at geosynchronous orbit responds to the fast flow accompanied by dipolarization in the near-earth plasma sheet, using the measurements from GOES 11 and 12 statellites. We found that most of the fast flows do not reach geosynchronous orbit as suggested by Ohtani et al. (2006).

Asymmetric tip clearance in an axial compressor induces pressure and velocity redistributions along the circumferential direction in an axial compressor. This paper presents the mechanism of the flow redistribution due to the asymmetric tip clearance with a simple numerical modeling. The flow field of a rotor of an axial compressor is predicted when an asymmetric tip clearance occurs along the circumferential direction. The modeling results are supported by CFD results not only to validate the present modeling but also to investigate more detailed flow fields. Asymmetric tip clearance makes local flow area and resultant axial velocity vary along the circumferential direction. This flow redistribution 'seed' results in a different flow patterns according to the flow coefficient. Flow field redistribution patterns are largely dependent on the local tip clearance performance at low flow coefficients. However, the contribution of the main flow region becomes dominant while the tip clearance effect becomes weak as the flow coefficient increases. The flow field redistribution pattern becomes noticeably strong if a blockage effect is involved when the flow coefficient increases. The relative flow angle at the small clearance region decreases which result in a negative incidence angle at the high flow coefficient. It causes a recirculation region at the blade pressure surface which results in the flow blockage. It promotes the strength of the flow field redistribution at the rotor outlet. These flow pattern changes have an effect on the blade loading perturbations. The integration of blade loading perturbation from control volume analysis of the circumferential momentum leads to well-known Alford's force. Alford's force is always negative when the flow blockage effects are excluded. However when the flow blockage effect is incorporated into the modeling, main flow effects on the flow redistribution is also reflected on the Alford's force at the high flow coefficient. Alford's force steeply increases as the flow coefficient increases, because of the tip leakage suppression and strong flow redistribution. The predicted results are well agreed to CFD results by Kang and Kang(2006).
A digital micro holographic particle tracking velocimetry (HPTV) system consisting of a high-speed camera and a single laser with acoustic optical modulator (AOM) chopper was established. The digital micro HPTV system was applied to water flow in a micro curved-tube for measuring instantaneous 3-D velocity field data consecutively. The micro curved-tube is using to reproduce the dorsal aorta or utilize in various lap-on-a-chip. The temporal evolution of a three-dimensional water flow in the micro curved-tube (the curvature, ${\kappa}$=1/${\phi}$, 2/${\phi}$, 4/${\phi}$, 8/${\phi}$) of 100 ${\mu}m$ and 300 ${\mu}m$ inner diameters was obtained and mean velocity field distribution was obtained by statistical-averaging the instantaneous velocity fields.
