  • The optical band gap energy for $SrTiO_3$ by reduction at high temperature was 3.15 eV. The reflectivity of reduced $SrTiO_3$ single crystals showed little variation, however, the reflectivity by the reduction condition had no effect. For the phonon mode at about 790 $cm^{-1}$, a blue-shift took place upon $N_2$ reduction and the decreased. However, a red-shift took place upon a $H_2-N_2$ reduction and the increased at the same phonon mode. With decreasing temperature the dielectric constant decreased rapidly. The thermal activation energies were 0.92-1.02 eV.

  • This study investigates the relationship between the Korean temperature and the atmospheric circulation such as Arctic Oscillation, Siberian High and Aleutian Low during the winter (December-January) for the period of 1970-2011. It is found that all indices to represent aforementioned circulations are significantly correlated with Korean winter temperature for the period of 1970 - 2011. There are marked contrasts in such relationship, however, before and after the mid-1980s when a significant regime shift of Korean winter temperature occurred. While Korean winter temperature has a close relationship with Arctic Oscillation after the mid-1980s, its relationship with Siberian High and Aleutian Low is weakened. The composite analysis between a positive and negative phase of Arctic Oscillation before and after the mid-1980s is conducted to examine a recent strengthening of Arctic Oscillation-Korean winter temperature relationship. It is found that the structural changes of low-level wind and the geopotential height at 500 hPa between the two phases of Arctic Oscillation are more effective to influence Korean winter temperature after the mid-1980s. This may induce a close relationship between the Korean winter temperature variability and Arctic Oscillation after the mid-1980s compared to before the mid-1980s.

  • In this paper, a wavelength tunable light source based on mutually injected locking with two F-P LDs, has been constructed and then analyzed for wavelength shift and RIN (Relative Intensity noise) according to temperature. We have measured maximum about 2 nm for the wavelength shift and minimum -110dB/hz for the RIN. Also, the RIN and beating noise in eye patterns are increased by changing temperature high.

  • The stabilities of the charge transfer complexes of pentamethyl benzene with iodine in n-hexane have been investigated by UV-spectrophotometric measurements at 25, 40 and 60$^{\circ}C$ up to 1600 bars. The equilibrium constant of the complex formation was increased with pressure while being decreased with temperature raising. Changes of volume, enthalpy, free energy and entropy for the formation of the complexes were obtained from the equilibrium constants. The red-shift at higher pressure, the blue-shift at higher temperature, and the relation between pressure and oscillator strength have been discussed by means of thermodynamic functions. In comparison with the results in the previous studies, the absolute values of ${\Delta}$V at each temperature were increased with the number of methyl groups of polymethyl benzene. However, it can be seen that both ${\Delta}$H and ${\Delta}$S show extreme behaviors in durene near atmospheric pressure but they are negatively increased with the number of methyl groups near 1600 bar. This order of the thermodynamic parameters may be a measure of the relative basicities of polymethyl benzenes toward iodine under each pressure, and these phenomena are explained in terms of a positive inductive effect and a steric hindrance effect of the polymethyl benzene molecule.

  • In order to control thermal deformation of machine origin of machine tools due to internal and external heat sources, the real-time compensation system has been developed. First, GMDH models were constructed to estimate thermal deformation of machine origin for a vertical machining center through the measurement of deformation data and temperature data of specific points on the machine tool. Thermocouples and gap sensors are used respectively for measurement. These models are nonlinear equations with high-order polynomials and implemented in a multilayered perceptron type network structure. Secondly, work origin shift method were developed by implementing digital I/O interface board between CNC controller and IBM-PC. The work origin shift method is to shift the work origin by the compensation amounts which is calculated by pre-established GMDH model. From the experimental result, thermal deformation of machine origin was reduced to below $\pm$5${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$.

  • The effect of strain rate on the yield stress of an Al-Li alloy has been investigated at temperatures between 77 and 523 K and over the strain rate range from $1.77{\times}10^{-4}s^{-1}$ to $1.77{\times}10^{-2}s^{-1}$. At testing temperatures below 373 K, the yield stress is almost independent of strain rate at any aging stage. At testing temperatures above 373 K, the yield stress increases linearly with the logarithm of strain rate, and the strain rate dependence increases with increasing testing temperature. The yield stresses of under-aged alloy at temperatures between 373 and 473 K at high strain rates are greater than the yield stress at 77 K. For the alloy under-aged or aged nearly to its peak strength, the temperature range within which the positive temperature dependence of yield stress appears expands to the higher temperature side with increasing strain rate. The strain rate dependence of the yield stress is slightly negative at this aging stage. The yield stress of the over-aged alloy decreases monotonically with decreasing strain rate and with increasing testing temperature above 373 K. The modulus normalized yield stress is nearly constant at testing temperatures below 373 K at any strain rate investigated. And, strength depends largely both on the aging conditions and on the testing temperature. The peak positions in strength vs. aging time curves shift to the side of shorter aging time with increasing testing temperature. For the specimens aged nearly to the peak strength, the positive temperature dependence of yield stress is observed in the temperature range. The shift of peak positions in the aging curves are explained in terms of the positive temperature dependence of cutting stress and the negative temperature dependence of by-passing stress.

  • At high rail temperature above the neutral temperature, high compressive axial stresses will occur in the rails. High thermal axial force and vehicle loads cause the track to shift in a lateral direction and the formation of track geometry imperfections (track irregularity). When the thermal stress level and track irregularity with vehicle load reach a critical value, the track loses stability. In many studies, the stability of CWR tracks is analyzed. However these studies are only considered in temperature load. The main objective of this investigation was to estimate a new, comprehensive, realistic, the stability of CWR tracks considering wheel load. The ballast resistance is changed by wheel load. When the wheel load is applied, rails and ties are moved upward or downward. In this case the friction between ties and ballasts is decreased or increased. In this study the change of the ballast resistance of each tie was applied to the nonlinear analysis of CWR tracks.

  • Plasma melatonin, thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) and body temperature were measured simultaneously and continuously before and after the sleep-wake cycle was shifted in 4 healthy males and changes in the circadian rhythm itself and in the phase relationship among these circadian rhythms were determined. Normal sleep-wake cycle (sleep hours: 2300-0700) was delayed by 10 h (sleep hours: 0900-1700) during the experiment. Even after this shift the typical melatonin rhythm was maintained: low during daytime and high during night. The melatonin rhythm was gradually delayed day by day. The TSH rhythm was also maintained fundamentally during 3 consecutive days of altered sleep-wake cycle. The phase was also delayed gradually but remarkably. The daily rhythm of body temperature was changed by the alteration of sleep-wake cycle. The body temperature began to decrease at the similar clock time as in the control but the decline during night awake period was less steep and the lowered body temperature persisted during sleep. The hormonal profiles during the days of shifted sleep/wake cycle suggest that plasma melatonin and TSH rhythms are basically regulated by an endogenous biological clock. The parallel phase shift of melatonin and TSH upon the change in sleep-wake cycle suggests that a common unitary pacemaker probably regulates these two rhythms. The reversal phase relationship between body temperature and melatonin suggests that melatonin may have a hypothermic effect on body temperature. The altered body temperature rhythm suggests that the awake status during night may inhibit the circadian decrease in body temperature and that sleep sustains the lowered body temperature. It is probable but uncertain that there ave causal relationships among sleep, melatonin, TSH, and body temperature.
