  • Hot-Press-Forming (HPF), an advanced sheet metal forming method using stamping at a high temperature of about $900^{\circ}C$ and quenching in an internally cooled die set, is one of the most successful forming process in producing crash-resistant parts such as pillars and bumpers with complex shape, ultrahigh strength, and minimum springback. To optimize conditions of a forming quality in HPF process and secure a safe product without any failures, such as fractures and wrinkling, the simulations based on the coupled thermo-mechanical analysis for a hot-press-formed lower control arm are applied with Taguchi's orthogonal array experiment. Three factor variables - the friction coefficient, blank shape, and hole location for burring - are selected to be optimized. The most effective condition of a forming quality for a hot-press-formed lower control arm is suggested. The simulation results are confirmed with experimental ones.

  • When a high-energy ultrasound propagates through a solid body that contains a crack or a delamination, the two faces of the defect do not ordinarily vibrate in unison, and dissipative phenomena such as friction, rubbing and clapping between the faces will convert some of the vibrational energy to heat. By combining this heating effect with infrared imaging, one can detect a subsurface defect in material efficiently. In this paper a detection of the welding defect of thin SUS 304 plates using the UIR (ultrasonic infrared imaging) technology is described. A low frequency (20kHz) ultrasonic transducer was used to infuse the welded thin SUS 304 plates with a short pulse of sound for 280ms. The ultrasonic source has a maximum power of 2kW. The surface temperature of the area under inspection is imaged by a thermal infrared camera that is coupled to a fast frame grabber in a computer. The hot spots, which are a small area around the defect tip and heated up highly, are observed. From the sequence of the thermosonic images, the location of defective or inhomogeneous regions in the welded thin SUS 304 plates can be detected easily.

  • We have investigated the seasonal characteristics of surface turbulent fluxes observed at Ieodo Ocean Research Station from 2005 to 2006. Both 10Hz and 30 minutes flux data are quality controled, and tilt correction is performed in 10Hz data before quality control. The turbulent fluxes of open sea shows clear seasonal variations, though diurnal variations are barely shown. The seasonal ratio of stable and unstable conditions are closely related to the temperature difference between sea surface and air. In stable and semi-stable condition, latent and sensible heat fluxes have very small values without any relationship with wind speed. Though friction velocity shows slightly increasing trend with wind speed, it has many outliers. In unstable condition, turbulent fluxes increased with wind speed. Especially, latent heat flux increased rapidly during DJF. The latent heat flux at high wind speeds is more scatter.

  • This study explains the effects of lubricant and surface treatment on hot forging die life. The mechanical and thermal load, and thermal softening which is happened by the high temperature of die, in hot and warm forging, cause die wear, heat checking and plastic deformation, etc. This study is fur the effects of solid lubricants and surface treatment condition for hot forging die. Because cooling effect and low friction are essential to the long life of dies, optimal surface treatment and lubricant are very important to improve die life for hot forging process. The main factors, which affect die hardness and heat transfer, are surface treatments and lubricants, which are related to thermal diffusion coefficient and heat transfer coefficient, etc. For verifying these effects, experiments are performed for hot ring compression test and heat transfer coefficient in various conditions as like different initial billet temperatures and different loads. The effects of lubricant and surface treatment for hot forging die life are explained by their thermal characteristics. The new developed technique in this study for predicting tool life can give more feasible means to improve the tool life in hot forging process.

  • The dissipation of high-power ultrasonic energy at the faces of the defect causes an increase in temperature. It is resulted from localized selective heating in the vicinity of cracks because of the friction effect. In this paper the measurement of size and direction of crack using UET(Ultrasound Excitation Thermography) is described. The ultrasonic pulse energy is injected into the sample in one side. The hot spot, which is a small area around the crack tip and heated up highly, is observed. The hot spot, which is estimated as the starting point of the crack, is seen in the nearest position from the ultrasonic excitation point. Another ultrasonic pulse energy is injected into the sample in the opposite side. The hot spot, the ending point of the crack, is seen in the closest distance from the injection point also. From the calculation of the coordinates of both the first hot spot and the second hot spot observed, the size and slope of the crack is estimated. In the experiment of STS fatigue crack specimen(thickness 14mm), the size and the direction of the crack was measured.

  • In this paper, study on the mode characteristics analysis of the SH-EMAT (shear horizontal, electromagnetic acoustic transducer) waves for evaluating the thickness reduction in plates such as corrosion and friction is presented. Noncontact methods for ultrasonic wave generation and detection have been a great concern and highly demanded due to their capability of wave generation and reception on surface of high temperature or on rough surface. Mode identification of the SH-EMAT wave is carried out in an aluminum plate with thinning defects using time frequency analysis method such as wavelet transform, compared with theoretically calculated group velocity dispersion curve. The changes of various wave features such as the amplitude and the time-of-flight have been observed and the correlations with the thickness reduction have been investigated. Firstly, experiments have been conducted to confirm that it is possible to selectively generate and receive specific desired SH modes. These modes have then been analyzed to select the parameters that are sensitive to the thickness change. The results show that the mode cutoff and the time-of-flight changes are feasible as key parameters to evaluate the thickness reduction.

  • In recent years, the composite columns have been widely used in the structures. These columns are mainly used to construct the structures with a large span and high floor height. Concrete filled tubes (CFTs) are a type of composite column, which are popular nowadays due to their numerous benefits. The purpose of this study is to investigate such frames at elevated temperatures. The method used in this research is based on section 2.2 of Eurocode 4. First, for the verification purpose, a comparison was made between the experimental results and the numerical model of the concrete filled tube. Then a composite frame was analyzed under fire temperature with different parameters. The results showed that the failure time decreased with increasing the friction of different models. Moreover, investigation of the concrete moisture content revealed that an increase in the concrete moisture content from 3% to 10% led to extended failure time for different models. For instance, in the second frame model, the failure time has increased up to 8%.
