  • One hundred and twenty indigenous pigeons of either sexes of different age groups were sacrificed in different seasons to assess the interactions of sex, age and seasons on the proximate composition and gross energy values of fresh boneless meat. The dry matter and protein contents decreased but the fat, ash and energy contents increased linearly as the birds aged. Seasons and age had significant influences on either of these two performance traits. Meat of growing pigeons of both sexes was found to contain high protein and low fat throughout the year.

  • Identification of wave characteristics during current disruption events in the near-Earth geomagnetic tail region (~ 10 RE) is important to understand the substorm onset mechanism. In this paper, linear stability analysis in the ion-cyclotron grequency range, considering temperature anisotropy and cross-field flow is presented. It is found that the ion-cyclotron drift waves propagating in a quasi-perpendicular direction with respect to the ambient magnetic field are characterized by low frequencies ($\omega$ < $0.5{\Omega}ci$), while quasi-parallel waves have frequencies close to the ion-cyclotron frequency ($\omega{\sim}{\Omega}ci$). This finding is consistent with the observation by THEMIS spacecraft of a current disruption event in which a similar high- and low-frequency band structure is also present [A. T. Y. Lui, et al., J. Geophys. Res. 113, A00C06 (2008)]. It is also found that the quasi-perpendicular mode is excited by the ion cross-field flow.

  • The retardation effect of fatigue crack propagation after cyclic overloading seems to be affected by strain hardening exponent. Namely, for the material with high values of n, the delay effect is found to be severe. We proposed a modified crack retardation equation which may apply the retardation of fatigue crack growth after a cyclic overloading, as (da/dN)'$_{cyc}$=($\mu$n+λ)B $\Delta$ $K^{q}$ /[(1- $R_{eff}$) $K_{cf}$$\Delta$K]. where, $R_{eff}$ is effective stress ratio [=( $K_{min}$-K, os)/( $K_{max}$$K_{res}$)] The constants $\mu$=-0.5 and λ=0.6, and the values are found to be identical for materials such as aluminum (A 1060), steel (SS 34), brass ( $B_{s}$ SIB) and stainless steel (SUS 304) used in this investigation. • This paper investigates the thermodynamic performance of latent heat thermal energy storage system using two phase change materials(2-PCM system). The thermodynamic merit of using 2-PCM is clear in terms of exergetic efficiency, which is substantially higher than that of 1-PCM system. Optimum phase change temperature to maximize the exergetic efficiency exists for each case. The heat transfer area ratio of high temperature storage unit, X, becomes another important parameter for 2-PCM system if the phase change temperatures of given materials are different from those of optimum conditions. It is a good approximation for X$_{opt}$ to be 0.5 when optimum phase change temperatures are used. Otherwise X$_{opt}$ is determined differently as a function of given phase change temperatures.res.

  • We propose a novel deep neural network model for detecting human activities in untrimmed videos. The process of human activity detection in a video involves two steps: a step to extract features that are effective in recognizing human activities in a long untrimmed video, followed by a step to detect human activities from those extracted features. To extract the rich features from video segments that could express unique patterns for each activity, we employ two different convolutional neural network models, C3D and I-ResNet. For detecting human activities from the sequence of extracted feature vectors, we use BLSTM, a bi-directional recurrent neural network model. By conducting experiments with ActivityNet 200, a large-scale benchmark dataset, we show the high performance of the proposed DeepAct model.

  • The three-dimensional structure of an inorganic crystal, $SmZn_{0.67}Sb_2$ (space group $P4/nmm,\;a=4.30(3){\AA}\;and\;c= 10.27(1){\AA}$), was refined by electron crystallography utilizing high voltage electron microscopy (HVEM). Effects of instrumental resolution, image quality, beam damage and specimen tilting on the structure refinement have been evaluated. The instrumental resolution and image quality were the most important factors on the final results in the structure refinement, while the beam damage and specimen tilting effects could be experimentally minimized or controlled. The average phase errors $({\Phi}_{res})$ for the [001], [100] and [110] HVEM images of $SmZn_{0.67}Sb_2$ were $10.1^{\circ},\;9.6^{\circ}\;and\;6.8^{\circ}$, respectively. The atomic coordinates of $SmZn_{0.67}Sb_2$ were consistent within $0.0013{\AA}{\sim}0.0088{\AA}$, compared to the X-ray crystallography data for the same sample.

  • With the advent of 'The Forth Industrial Revolution' and the growing demand for quality of life due to economic growth, needs for the quality of medical services are increasing. Artificial intelligence has been introduced in the medical field, but it is rarely used in chronic skin diseases that directly affect the quality of life. Also, atopic dermatitis, a representative disease among chronic skin diseases, has a disadvantage in that it is difficult to make an objective diagnosis of the severity of lesions. The aim of this study is to establish an intelligent severity recognition model of atopic dermatitis for improving the quality of patient's life. For this, the following steps were performed. First, image data of patients with atopic dermatitis were collected from the Catholic University of Korea Seoul Saint Mary's Hospital. Refinement and labeling were performed on the collected image data to obtain training and verification data that suitable for the objective intelligent atopic dermatitis severity recognition model. Second, learning and verification of various CNN algorithms are performed to select an image recognition algorithm that suitable for the objective intelligent atopic dermatitis severity recognition model. Experimental results showed that 'ResNet V1 101' and 'ResNet V2 50' were measured the highest performance with Erythema and Excoriation over 90% accuracy, and 'VGG-NET' was measured 89% accuracy lower than the two lesions due to lack of training data. The proposed methodology demonstrates that the image recognition algorithm has high performance not only in the field of object recognition but also in the medical field requiring expert knowledge. In addition, this study is expected to be highly applicable in the field of atopic dermatitis due to it uses image data of actual atopic dermatitis patients.

  • Changes in pyrene binding by dissolved and kaolinite-associated humic substances (HS) due to HS adsorptive fractionation processes were examined using purified Aldrich humic acid (PAHA) at different pH (4, 7 and 9). Irrespective of solution pH, molecular weight (MW) fractionation occurred upon adsorption of PAHA onto kaolinite, resulting in the deviation of residual PAHA MW from the original MW prior to sorption. Variation in $K_{OC}$ by bulk PAHA was observed at different pH due to relative contributions of partitioning and size exclusion effects (i.e., specific interactions). For all pH conditions investigated, carbon-normalized pyrene binding coefficients for nonadsorbed, residual fractions $(K_{OC}(res))$ were different from the original dissolved PAHA $K_{OC}$ value $(K_{OC}(orig))$ prior to contact with the kaolinite suspensions. Positive correlations between pyrene $(K_{OC}(res))$ and weight-average molecular weight $(MW_W)$ for residual PAHA fractions were observed for pH 7 and 9. However, such a positive correlation was not found at pH 4 due to the absence of the dramatic fractionation observed for high pH conditions (i.e., exclusive fractionation with respect to higher MW), suggesting that actual MW distribution pattern is more important for sorption-fractionated HS than the composite MW value. For adsorbed PAHA, conformational changes of PAHA upon adsorption seem to be important for the extent of pyrene binding. At relatively high pH (7 and 9), lower extent of pyrene binding was observed for adsorbed PAHA versus nonadsorbed PAHA. The conformation effects were more pronounced at higher pH.
