  • Based on the string, Euler beam, and Timoshenko beam theories, the transfer functions of axially translating web system to predict the lateral tracking are introduced in this paper. In addition, total transfer function of a multi-span web handling system is developed by the combination of the transfer functions of each single span. Experiments and computations are carried out and the results obtained for the Timoshenko beam model are compared with those of other models. The comparison indicates that the predictions from the Timoshenko and Euler beam models are quite different from that of the classical string model in both the gain and phase response. The results are expected to help in the development of high fidelity models of web tracking systems within a general computational framework.

  • Local failure of a primary structural component induced by direct air-blast loading may be itself a critical damage and lead to the partial or full collapse of the building. As an extensive research to mitigate blast-induced hazards in steel frame structure, a state-of-art analytical approach or high-fidelity computational nonlinear continuum modeling using computational fluid dynamics was described in this paper. The capability of the approach to produce reasonable blast pressures on a steel wide-flange section column was first evaluated. Parametric studies were conducted to observe the effects of section sizes and boundary conditions on behavior and failure of columns in steel frame structures. This study shows that the analytical approach is reasonable and effective to understand the nature of blast wave and complex interaction between blast loading and steel column behavior.

  • It is very difficult to acquire high-fidelity flight test data for small airplanes such as typical unmanned aerial vehicles because MEMS-type small sensors used in the tests do not present reliable data in general. Besides, it is not practical to conduct expensive flight tests for low-cost small airplanes in order to simulate their flight characteristics. A practical approach to obtain acceptable flight data, including stability and control derivatives and data of weight and balance, is proposed in this study. Aircraft design software such as Darcorp's AAA is used to generate aerodynamic data for small airplanes, and moments of inertia are calculated using CATIA, structural design software. These flight data from simulation software are evaluated subjectively and tailored using simulation flight by experienced pilots, based on the certified procedures in FAA AC 120-45A and 40B, which are used for manned airplane simulators.

  • This paper presents a new laser lock-in thermography (LLT) technique for nondestructive evaluation. LLT utilizes a modulated continuous wave laser beam as a heat source to obtain high fidelity thermal wave images even at the presence of background heat disturbances. The thermal waves propagating along the surface and through-the-thickness directions of a structure are visualized using newly developed laser lock-in amplitude and phase images, enhancing the detectability of surface and subsurface defects. The LLT technique is numerically investigated and experimentally validated using thermal images obtained from a steel specimen with low emissivity.

  • The role of 3' exonuclease excision in DNA polymerization was evaluated in primer extensions using 3' allele-specific primers that had exonuclease-digestible and exonuclease-resistant 3' termini. With exonuclease-digestible unmodified 3' mismatched primers, the exo+ polymerase yielded template-dependent products. Using exonuclease-resistant 3' mismatched primers, no primer-extended product resulted from exo+ polymerase. As a control, polymerase without proofreading activity yielded primer-dependent products from 3' mismatched primers. These data indicated that a successful removal of the mismatch is required for DNA polymerization from the 3' mismatched primers by exo+ polymerase. In addition to the well-known proofreading from this mismatch removal, the premature termination in DNA polymerization, due to the failure of the efficient removal of the mismatched nucleotides, worked as an off-switch in maintaining the high fidelity in DNA replication from exo+ polymerase.

  • Temperature distribution of thick plate during welding was investigated. Applied weldng process was shielded metal arc welding which was known as one of the most utilized processes in fabrication fields. Heating and cooling cycles were recorded by imploying high fidelity recorded and K-type thermocouple of 0.3mm in diameter. Both analytical and numerical calculations were preformed so as to verify the thermal cycle measurement. Results showed that the temperature of a welded points at given time could be predicted by the theoretical calculations. It was considered that methods could be applied to real structural components with slight modification.

  • It is getting higher the demand on a good sound in a car. Like some other sensory qualities, achieving a good sound is still treated as a black-box followed by the individual taste of tuning engineers. This study aims to define the attributes of a good car audio sound and the assessment factors affecting the sound quality. With a variety of surveys on professional listening groups and car audio installers, 26 most frequently used vocabularies are selected as typical presentations of car audio sound quality. After repetitions of listening tests with deliberately selected test CD, pre-recorded 15 different digital car-recordings, headphones replay system, and three different listening groups, it is proved that there are at least 5 different assessment factors which significantly affect the car audio sound quality. They are high fidelity, spectral balance, tonal accuracy, sound stage and acoustic fault.

  • Human can generate various posture and motion with nearly 350 muscle pairs. From the viewpoint of mechanisms, the human skeleton mechanism represents great kinematic and dynamical complexity. Physical and behavioral fidelity of human motion requires dynamically accurate modeling and controling. This paper describes a mathematical modeling, and dynamic simulation of human body. The human dynamic model is simplified as a rigid body consisting of 18 actuated degrees of freedom for the real time computation. Complex kinematic chain of human body is partitioned as 6 serial kinematic chains that is, left arm, right arm, support leg, free leg, body, and head. Modeling is developed based on Newton-Euler formulation. The validity of proposed dynamic model, which represents mathematically high order differential equation, is verified through the dynamic simulation.

  • The longitudinal flight parameters of a light airplane are estimated from flight test data by use of the output error method. The reliability of the flight test measurement is examined in engineering judgment, scatter and Cramer-Rao bound, which turns out to be satisfactory with minor defects. Estimated parameter values are validated by comparing the simulated responses with the ones from actual flight tests. The FTD(Flight Training Device) of a light airplane turns out to satisfy the qualification of FAA Level 5 FTD in longitudinal motion. All the necessary practices for generation of high-fidelity data in longitudinal motion of a light aircraft are successfully performed in this study.
