  • We present simple methods for fabricating high aspect-ratio polymer nanostructures on a solid substrate by rigiflex lithography with tailored capillarity and adhesive force. In the first method, a thin, thermoplastic polymer film was prepared by spin coating on a substrate and the temperature was raised above the polymer's glass transition temperature ($T_g$) while in conformal contact with a poly(urethane acrylate) (PUA) mold having nano-cavities. Consequently, capillarity forces the polymer film to rise into the void space of the mold, resulting in nanostructures with an aspect ratio of ${\sim}4$. In the second method, very high aspect-ratio (>20) nanohairs were fabricated by elongating the pre-formed nanostructures upon removal of the mold with the aid of tailored capillarity and adhesive force at the mold/polymer interface. Finally, these two methods were further used to fabricate micro/nano hierarchical structures by sequential application of the molding process for mimicking nature's functional surfaces such as a lotus leaf and gecko foot hairs.

  • High negative pressure coefficient is formed in the corner of the bluff body structures. For many curtain wall designers this phenomena is of interest because this high negative pressure coefficient is adopted in structural calculation. The present study is aimed to investigate shedding vortex characteristics of two-dimensional rectangular prism flow. Unsteady calculation by finite difference method based upon SOLA is carried out for three aspect ratios(1:1, 1:2, 1:3) of Re=10$^4$ in viscous incompressible flow within infinite domain. Fluctuation of velocity components at various pick-up points and time variation of drag and lift coefficients are analysed by FFT method to reveal shedding vortex frequency patterns. At aspect ratio 1:1, one primary Strouhal number appears for about all pick-up points. At aspect ratio 1:2, two representative Strouhal numbers are classified by pick-up positions and their flows show two different reattachment patterns. For aspect ratio 1:3, frequency spectrum maintains multiple peaks.

  • The front transparent conductive oxide (TCO) films must exhibit good transparency, low resistivity and excellent light scattering properties for high efficiency amorphous silicon (a-Si) thin film solar cells. The light trapping phenomenon is limited due to non-uniform and low aspect ratio of the textured glass [1]. We present the low cost electrochemically deposited uniform zinc oxide (ZnO) nanorods with various aspect ratios for a-Si thin film solar cells. Since the major drawback of the electrochemically deposited ZnO nanorods was the high sheet resistance and low transmittance that was overcome by depositing the RF magnetron sputtered AZO films as a seed layer with various thicknesses [2]. The length and diameters of the ZnO nanorods was controlled by varying the deposition conditions. The length of ZnO nanorods were varied from 400 nm to $2{\mu}m$ while diameter was kept higher than 200 nm to obtain different aspect ratios. The uniform ZnO nanorods showed higher haze ratio as compared to the commercially available FTO films. We also observed that the scattering in the longer wavelength region was favored for the high aspect ratio of ZnO nanorods and much higher aspect ratios degraded the light scattering phenomenon. Therefore, we proposed our low cost and uniform ZnO nanorods for the high efficiency of thin film solar cells.

  • Instability of a thin film attached to a compliant substrate often leads to emergence of exquisite wrinkle patterns with length scales that depend on the system geometry and applied stresses. However, the patterns that are created using the current techniques in polymer surface engineering, generally have low aspect ratio of undulation amplitude to wavelength, thus, limiting their application. Here, we present a novel and effective method that enables us to create wrinkles with a desired wavelength and high aspect ratio of amplitude over wavelength as large as to 2.5:1. First, we create buckle patterns with high aspect ratio of amplitude to wavelength by deposition of an amorphous carbon film on a surface of a soft polymer poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS). Amorphous carbon films are used as a protective layer in structural systems and biomedical components, due to their low friction coefficient, strong wear resistance against, and high elastic modulus and hardness. The deposited carbon layer is generally under high residual compressive stresses (~1 GPa), making it susceptible to buckle delamination on a hard substrate (e.g. silicon or glass) and to wrinkle on a flexible or soft substrate. Then, we employ glancing angle deposition (GLAD) for deposition of a high aspect ratio patterns with amorphous carbon coating on a PDMS surface. Using this method, pattern amplitudes of several nm to submicron size can be achieved by varying the carbon deposition time, allowing us to harness patterned polymers substrates for variety of application. Specifically, we demonstrate a potential application of the high aspect wrinkles for changing the surface structures with low surface energy materials of amorphous carbon coatings, increasing the water wettability.

  • When seismic isolation system is applied to high aspect-ratio (height/wide-ratio) steel structures, there are several problems to be taken into consideration. One is lifting up tensile force on the isolation bearing by overturning moment caused by earthquake. Another is securing building stiffness to produce seismic isolation effects. Under these conditions, this paper reports the structural design of high-rise research building in the campus of Tokyo Institute of Technology. With the stepping-up system for the corner bearings, the narrow sides of single span framework are designed to concentrate the dead load as counter-weight for the tensile reaction under earthquake. Also we adopted concrete in-filled steel column and Mega-Bracing system covering four layers on north & south framework to secure the horizontal stiffness of the building.

  • Experiments were performed by using PF-5060 and water to investigate the influence of an aspect ratio of a horizontal rectangular channel on the cooling characteristics from an in-line $6{\times}1$ array of discrete heat sources which were flush mounted on the top wall of the channel. The experimental parameters were aspect ratio of rectangular channel, heat flux of simulated VLSI chip, and channel Reynolds number. The chip surface temperatures decreased with the aspect ratio at the first and sixth rows, and decreased more rapidly at a high heat flux than at a low heat flux. The measured friction factors at each aspect ratio for both water and PF-5060 gave a good agreement with the values predicted by the modified Blasius equation within ${\pm}7%$. The Nusselt number increased as the aspect ratio decreased, but the increasing rate of Nusselt number reduced as the aspect ratio decreased. A 5:1 rectangular channel yields the most efficient cooling performance when the heat transfer and pressure drop in the test section were considered simultaneously.

  • Across-wind aerodynamic damping ratios are identified from the wind-induced acceleration responses of 15 aeroelastic models of rectangular super-high-rise buildings in various simulated wind conditions by using the random decrement technique. The influences of amplitude-dependent structural damping ratio and natural frequency on the estimation of the aerodynamic damping ratio are discussed and the identifying method for aerodynamic damping is improved at first. Based on these works, effects of turbulence intensity $I_u$, aspect ratio H/B, and side ratio B/D on the across-wind aerodynamic damping ratio are investigated. The results indicate that turbulence intensity and side ratio are the most important factors that affect across-wind aerodynamic damping ratio, whereas aspect ratio indirectly affects the aerodynamic damping ratio by changing the response amplitude. Furthermore, empirical aerodynamic damping functions are proposed to estimate aerodynamic damping ratios at low and high reduced speeds for rectangular super-high-rise buildings with an aspect ratio in the range of 5 to 10, a side ratio of 1/3 to 3, and turbulence intensity varying from 1.7% to 25%.

  • The aspect ratio is the main parameter which governs the outer flow pattern and nozzle performance. And in this study, some flow characteristics with the variation of nozzle aspect ratios such as mean pressure distributions along the center line of the outer flow, flow coefficients and the diffusion angles have been experimentally investigated. Through the experimental analysis, the higher aspect ratio was known to decrease the jet kinetic energy because of the friction losses at the outer of nozzle. As the result, it is found that the nozzle performance depends mainly on the aspect ratio of nozzle.

  • The micro barrier rip array structures have been applied in a variety of areas including as privacy films, micro heat sinks, touch panel and optical waveguide. The increased aspect ratio (AR) of barrier rip array structures is required in order to increase the efficiency and performance of these products. There are several problems such as burr, defect of surface roughness and deformation and breakage of barrier rip structure with machining high-aspect ratio micro barrier rip array structure using orthogonal cutting method. It is essential to develop technological methods to solve these problems. The optimum machining conditions for machining micro barrier rip array structures having high-aspect ratio were determined according to lengths ($200{\mu}m$ and $600{\mu}m$) and shape angles ($2.89^{\circ}$ and $0^{\circ}$) of diamond tool, overlapped cutting depths ($5{\mu}m$ and $10{\mu}m$), feed rates (100 mm/s) and three machining processes. Based on the optimum machining conditions, micro barrier rib array structures having aspect ratio 30 was machined in this study.

  • This paper reports a novel micromachining process based on UV-LIGA process and (110) silicon anisotropic etching for fabrication of a high-aspect-ratio comb actuator. The comb electrodes are fabricated by (110) SILICON comb structure considering the etch-rate-ratio between (110) and (111) planes and lateral etch rate of a beam-type structure. The fabricated structure was$ 400\mum \; thick\; and\; 18\mum$ wide comb electrodes separated by $7\mim$ so that the height-gap ratio was about 57. Also considering resonant frequency of the comb actuator and the frequency-matching between sensing and driving mode for gyroscope application, we designed the number, width, height and length of the spring structures. Electroplated gold springs on both sides of the seismic mass were $15\mum\; wide,\; 14\mum\; thick\; and \; 500\mum$ long. The fabricated comb actuator had resonant frequency ay 1430Hz, which was calculated to be 1441Hz. The proposed fabrication process can be applicable to the fabrication of a high-aspect-ratio comb actuator for a large displacement actuator and precision sensors. Moreover, this combined process enables to fabricate a more complex structure which cannot be fabricate only by surface or bulk micromachining.
