The purpose of the present study is to evaluate high temperature fracture toughness through the experimental and analytical method. The analysis method is proposed to simulate the fracture toughness of high temperatures. Load-COD curves of compact test specimen acquired by finite element method analysis using hypo elastic model are simulated to determine the crack initiation load on high temperatures. The results of experimental work are in accord with analysis in thermal shock test.
It was investigated that $Al_2$$O_3$/Cu nanocomposite powder could be optimally prepared by dispersion and reduction of Cu oxide, and suitably consolidated by employing pulse electric current sintering (PECS) process. $\alpha$-$Al_2$$O_3$ and CuO powders were used as elemental powders. In order to obtain $Al_2$O$_3$ embedded by finely and homogeneously dispersed CuO particles, the elemental powders were high energy ball milled at the rotating speed of 900 rpm, with the milling time varying up to 10 h. The milled powders were heat treated at $350^{\circ}C$ in H$_2$ atmosphere for 30 min to reduce CuO into Cu. The reduced powders were subsequently sintered by employing PECS process. The composites sintered at $1250^{\circ}C$ for 5 min showed the relative density of above 98%. The fracture toughness of the $Al_2$$O_3$/Cu nanocomposite was as high as 4.9MPa.$m^{1}$2//, being 1.3 times the value of pure $Al_2$$O_3$ sintered under the same condition.
Dense $WSi_2$-20vol.%SiC composite was synthesized by high-frequency induction-heated combustion synthesis(HFIHCS) method within 2 minutes in one step from elemental powder mixture of W, Si and C. Simultaneous combustion synthesis and densification were accomplished under the combined effects of an induced current and mechanical pressure. Highly dense $WSi_2$-20vol.%SiC with relative density of up to 97% was produced under simultaneous application of 60MPa pressure and the induced current. The average grain size of $WSi_2$ was about $5.2{\mu}m$. The hardness and fracture toughness values obtained were 1700kg/$mm^2$ and $4.4MPa{\cdot}m^{1/2}$, respectively.
Impact performance of high-performance concrete (HPC) and SFRC at 28-day and 56-day under the action of repeated dynamic loading was studied. Silica fume replacement at 10% and 15% by mass and crimped steel fiber ($V_f$ = 0.5%- 1.5%) with aspect ratios of 80 and 53 were used in the concrete mixes. Results indicated that addition of fibers in HPC can effectively restrain the initiation and propagation of cracks under stress, and enhance the impact strengths and toughness of HPC. Variation of fiber aspect ratio has minor effect on improvement in impact strength. Based on the experimental data, failure resistance prediction models were developed with correlation coefficient (R) = 0.96 and the estimated absolute variation is 1.82% and on validation, the integral absolute error (IAE) determined is 10.49%. On analyzing the data collected, linear relationship for the prediction of failure resistance with R= 0.99 was obtained. IAE value of 10.26% for the model indicates better the reliability of model. Multiple linear regression model was developed to predict the ultimate failure resistance with multiple R= 0.96 and absolute variation obtained is 4.9%.
In this paper, the fracture toughness evaluation of the various microstructures such as HAZ, F.L and W.M in weldment of TMCP steel which has the softening zone owing to high heat input welding was carried out by using of the small punch(SP) test. In addition, the fracture toughness with the specimen orientation of rolled TMCP steel was investigated by means of SP test and the crack opening displacement (COD) test and then was compared with that of conventional SM50YB steel. From the results of SP test for TMCP steel, it could be seen that the SP energy transition curves of three different orientation were shifted to higher temperature side in order of S, T and L. But the {TEX}$DBTT_{SP}${/TEX} of each orientation specimen did not show a lot of differences and were quite lower than those of conventional SM50YB steel. The mechanical properties of HAZ structure in weldment of TMCP steel such as hardness, SP energy at room temperature and -196$^{\circ}C$ and the upper shelf energy of SP energy transition curve were lower than those of base metal due to softening. The {TEX}$DBTT_{SP}${/TEX} of each microstructure in weldment of TMCP steel increased in order of HAZ, F.L and W.M against base metal, but all microstructures showed a quite lower {TEX}$DBTT_{SP}${/TEX} than those of SM50YB steel.
Various amount of NbC carbide was intentionally formed in a matrix-type cold-work tool steel by controlled amount of Nb and C addition. And the effect of NbC addition on the mechanical properties was investigated. Four alloys with different Nb and C contents were cast by vacuum induction melting, then hot forging and spheroidizing annealing were conducted. The machinability of the annealed specimens was examined with 3 different cutting tools. And tensile tests at room temperature were conducted. After quenching and tempering, hardness and impact toughness were measured, while wear resistance was evaluated by disk-on-plate type wear test. The increasing amount of NbC addition resulted in degraded machinability with increased strength, whereas the absence of NbC also led to poor machinability due to high toughness. After quenching and tempering, the additional NbC improved wear resistance with increasing hardness, whereas it deteriorated impact toughness. Therefore, it could be found that a moderate addition of NbC was desirable for the balanced combination of mechanical properties.
As a way of developing wooden joint development, a glass fiber reinforced wood plate was manufactured to replace a steel plate. Also, the fracture toughness was evaluated. Through application to a cantilever-type specimen made of a column and a beam, the moment resistance performance was evaluated. For the fracture toughness specimen of the wood plate, 12 types were manufactured by varying the combination of a main member (veneer and plywood) and reinforcement (glass fiber sheet and glass fiber cloth). The results of the fracture toughness test indicated that the 5% yield load of the specimen using plywood was 18% higher than that of the specimen using veneer, and that the specimen reinforced by inserting glass fiber sheets between testing materials (Type-3-PS) had the highest average 5% yield load 4841 N. Thus, a moment resistance strength test was performed by applying Type-3-PS to a column-beam joint. The results of the test indicated that compared to the specimen using a steel plate and a drift pin (Type-A), the maximum moment ratio of the specimen using a glass fiber reinforced wood plate (Type-3-PS) and a drift pin (Type-B) was 0.79; and that a rupture occurred in the wood plate due to high stiffness of the drift pin. The maximum moment ratio of the specimen using a glass fiber reinforced wood plate (Type-3-PS) and a glass fiber reinforced wooden laminated pin (Type-C) was 0.67, which showed low performance. However, unlike Type-A, a ductile fracture occurred on Type-C, and the load gradually decreased even after the maximum moment.
As the size of containership increased over 14,000TEU, thick steel plate with high strength has been used. The plate thickness increased over 70mm and yield strength of the steel plate was around $47kg_f/mm^2$. Many researchers reported that the thick welded plate has low crack arrest toughness. They noticed the crack arrest ability is dependent on the plate thickness. In other words, brittle crack propagates straightly along the welded line and make abrupt fracture in the thick plate which causes low $K_{ca}$. In this study, the other factors, especially welding heat input, to cause low crack arrest toughness was investigated for thick steel plate welds. EH grade steel plates were used in this study and 50 to 80 thick plates were tested to confirm thickness sensitivity. Electro gas welding (EGW) and flux cored arc welding (FCAW) were adopted to prepare the welded joints. Temperature gradient ESSO test was performed to measure $K_{ca}$ values with the variation of welding variables. As a result of this study, regardless of plate thickness, welding heat input to cause welding residual stress around crack path is a key factor to control the brittle crack propagation in welded joints.

Modified 9Cr-1Mo ferritic steel is a preferred material for steam generators in nuclear power plants for their creep strength and good corrosion resistance. Austenitic stainless steels, such as type 316LN, are used in the high temperature segments such as reactor pressure vessels and primary piping systems. So, the dissimilar joints between these materials are inevitable. In this investigation, dissimilar joints were fabricated by the Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) process with Inconel 82/182 filler metals. The notch tensile properties and Charpy V-notch impact toughness properties of various regions of dissimilar metal weld joints (DMWJs) were evaluated as per the standards. The microhardness distribution across the DMWJs was recorded. Microstructural features of different regions were characterized by optical and scanning electron microscopy. Inhomogeneous notch tensile properties were observed across the DMWJs. Impact toughness values of various regions of the DMWJs were slightly higher than the prescribed value. Formation of a carbon-enriched hard zone at the interface between the ferritic steel and the buttering material enhanced the notch tensile properties of the heat-affected-zone (HAZ) of P91. The complex microstructure developed at the interfaces of the DMWJs was the reason for inhomogeneous mechanical properties.
Cellulose fibers, being fairly strong and stiff as well as cheap and plentiful with low energy demand during manufacture, are strong contenders for the reinforcement of cement-based materials. Cellulose fiber-cement composites, generally manufactured by slurry-dewatering procedure, can find applications in the production of flat and corrugated cement sheets and many other thin-sheet cement products. This paper presents the results of an experimental study concerned with the effects of fiber content and moisture conditions on the flexural performance of these composites. An effort was also made to study the effect of pozzolanic admixtures on the flexural performance in different moisture conditions. The test results obtained were analyzed statistically using the analysis of variance in order to derive reliable conclusions. The results generated in this study were indicative of significant effects of fiber content and moisture condition of flexural performance. There is a tendency in flexural strength to increase in increase in fiber content up to 8%: flexural toughness values continue to increase even at higher fiber contents. Moisture content has a significant effect on the flexural performance. There is a tendency in flexural strength to decrease and flexural toughness to increase with increasing moisture content Composites incorporating pozzolans showed an increase in the flexural strength while slightly reducing the flexural toughness and were sensitive to variations in moisture content.
