This paper presents tension stiffening effect of Reinforced concrete members obtained from experimental results on direct tension and bending. From the direct tension test program, crack patterns were investigated with tension softening behaviors of concrete. Tension stiffening effects and losses of strain energy were, also, analyzed from the load-deflection curve with the main experimental variables such as concrete strength, yielding stress and reinforcement ratio of rebar. Tension stiffening effect of RC members increase linearly until the first crack initiate, decrease inversely with number of cracks, and then decrease rapidly when splitting cracks are happened. The tension stiffening effect is shown to be more important at the member of lower reinforcement than that of higher. Therefore, it necessitates to consider the tension stiffening effects at a nonlinear analysis. From the above analysis, a tension stiffening model of concrete is proposed and verified by applying it to bending members. From the numerical analysis by finite element approach, it is shown that the proposed model evaluates a little higher in analyzing at nonlinear region of high strength concrete, but, perform satisfactorily in general.
The tension stiffening effect, which means the maintaining a part of stiffness after cracking of concrete in tensile, exists at a reinforced concrete member because of the concrete softening and bonding stress between cracks. It is required to consider it for precise analysis and evaluation o structural behavior, due to the possibility of discrepancy between the actual behavior and the analysis without considering the tension stiffening effect. Making and adopting a tension stiffening model is the most simple and effective way for considering it at nonlinear analysis which indicated the estimation from models and experimental results were similar each others. The comparisons on RC beam were, also performed in order to analyzed the influence of concrete strength and steel ratio into the structural behavior. They indicated that the results from analysis estimated quite closely to the test results at low steel ratio, however, overestimated at high steel ratio. The overestimation increase linearly as concrete strength or steel ratio increased.

This paper presents the details of size independent fracture energy and bi-linear tension softening relation for nano modified high strength concrete. Nano silica in powder form has been used as partial replacement of cement by 2 wt%. Two popular methods, namely, simplified boundary effect method of Karihaloo et al. (2003) and RILEM (1985) fracture energy with P-${\delta}$ tail correction have been employed for estimation of size independent fracture energy for nano modified high strength concrete (compressive strength ranges from 55 MPa to 72 MPa). It is found that both the methods gave nearly same values, which is an additional evidence that either of them can be employed for determination of size independent fracture energy. Bi-linear tension softening relation corresponding to their size independent fracture energy has been constructed in an inverse manner based on the concept of non-linear hinge from the load-crack mouth opening plots of notched three-point bend beams.
In the design of reinforced concrete (RC) beams, apart from providing adequate strength, it is also necessary to provide a minimum deformability even for beams not located in seismic regions. In most RC design codes, this is achieved by restricting the maximum tension steel ratio or neutral axis depth. However, this empirical deemed-to-satisfy method, which was developed based on beams made of normal-strength concrete (NSC) and normal-strength steel (NSS), would not provide a consistent deformability to beams made of high-strength concrete (HSC) and/or high-strength steel (HSS). More critically, HSC beams would have much lower deformability than that provided previously to NSC beams. To ensure that a consistent deformability is provided to all RC beams, it is proposed herein to set an absolute minimum rotation capacity to all RC beams in the design. Based on this requirement, the respective maximum limits of tension steel ratio and neutral axis depth for different concrete and steel yield strengths are derived based on a formula developed by the authors. Finally for incorporation into design codes, simplified guidelines for designing RC beams having the proposed minimum deformability are developed.
The complete moment-curvature curves of doubly reinforced concrete beams made of normal- or high-strength concrete have been evaluated using a newly developed analytical method that takes into account the stress-path dependence of the constitutive properties of the materials. From the moment-curvature curves and the strain distribution results obtained, the post-peak behavior and flexural ductility of doubly reinforced normal- and high-strength concrete beam sections are studied. It is found that the major factors affecting the flexural ductility of reinforced concrete beam sections are the tension steel ratio, compression steel ratio and concrete grade. Generally, the flexural ductility decreases as the amount of tension reinforcement increases, but increases as the amount of compression reinforcement increases. However, the effect of the concrete grade on flexural ductility is fairly complicated, as will be explained in the paper. Quantitative analysis of such effects has been carried out and a formula for direct evaluation of the flexural ductility of doubly reinforced concrete sections developed. The formula should be useful for the ductility design of doubly reinforced normal- and high-strength concrete beams.
This paper presents the results of the experimental study on the performances of reinforced concrete beams rehabilitated by external unbonded high tension steel-bar. Design variables for the experiment in this study includes the position of anchorage zone of the high tension steel bar, the anchorage length of the reinforcing steel bar and the types of the shear strengthening measures. 5 specimens were tested with one point monotonically increased loads and structural performances such as strength capacities, ductility capacities and failure modes were analysed. It is found that the structural performance of the rehabilitated beams are strongly depended on the location of anchorage zone of the high tension steel-bars. In the case that anchorage zone is located near the critical shear zone, it is observed that the rehabilitated beam is failed in brittle failure mode and the additional shear strengthening is necessitated. But if anchorage zone is properly located or additional shear strengthening device is provided properly, it is also observed that the strength capacity of the rehabilitated beams could be increased more than $200\%$ by the proposed method.
With increasing use of high strength concrete tied columns in structural engineering, it becomes necessary to examine the applicability of related sections of current design codes. High strength concrete has an advantage of strength capacity and stiffness especially for column elements. This paper presents an experimental study of high strength concrete tied columns subjected to eccentric loading. The main variables included in this test were concrete compressive strength, steel amount, eccentricity, and slenderness ratio. The concrete compressive strength varied from 34.9Mpa(356kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$
) to 93.2Mpa(951kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$
) and the longitudinal steel ratios were between 1.1% and 5.5%. The eccentricity was selected for the different failure modes, i.e., compression control, balanced point, and tension control. The slenderness ratio varied from 19 to 61. The column specimens with same slenderness ratio but with different concrete compressive strength were constructed and tested. The purpose of this paper is to show failure modes of high strength reinforced concrete columns.
Recently, structure performance is maximized by using high strength concrete. In design of structure, concrete need combination with reinforcement, but use of common strength reinforcement make member complex bar placement, so high strength concrete members require increased strength reinforcement. If common strength reinforcement replaced by equal tension area of high strength reinforcement, reinforcement ratio increase and brittle failure of member may occur by material change. So, adequate upper limit of strength ratio is required to affirm ductile behavior in application of high strength reinforcement. In this study, ductility behavior was analysed by factor of reinforcement ratio, strength of concrete and reinforcement. The result indicate that ductile failure is shown under 0.35 $\rho_{b}$ in any reinforcement strength of same section and high strength concrete of 800kg/$cm^{2}$ used commonly is compatible with reinforcement of 5500kg/$cm^{2}$.
Various researches on the application of polymer dispersions to the cement mortar and concrete have been carried out in many countries like America, Japan and Germany and so on due to their high performance and good modification effect. PAE of polymer dispersion widely used in situ was employed that the high flowability may be induced in the cement mortar. In order to investigate the modification of cement mortar with high flowability by PAE and fracture mode of adhesive strength properties in tension of that, experimental parameters were set as PAE solid-cement ratio(P/C) and cement: fine aggregate(C:F) and the experiments such as unit weight, flow, consistency change, crack resistance and segregation that inform on the general properties have been done. Adhesion in tension is measured with a view to comprehending the properties and fracture mode in tensile load. Consistency change of cement mortar modified by PAE did grow better as the ratio of PAE solid-cement increased and was much superior to that of resin based flooring such as polyurethane and epoxy which recorded the loss of consistency in 90 min. after mixing. Adhesive strength in tension increased with continuity during curing period and showed the maximum in case of C:F=1:1 and P/C=20%.
A numerical model that can simulate the nonlinear behavior of ultra high strength fiber-reinforced concrete (UHSFRC) structures subject to monotonic loadings is introduced. Since engineering material properties of UHSFRC are remarkably different from those of normal strength concrete and engineered cementitious composite, classification of the mechanical characteristics related to the biaxial behavior of UHSFRC, from the designation of the basic material properties such as the uniaxial stress-strain relationship of UHSFRC to consideration of the bond stress-slip between the reinforcement and surrounding concrete with fiber, is conducted in this paper in order to make possible accurate simulation of the cracking behavior in UHSFRC structures. Based on the concept of the equivalent uniaxial strain, constitutive relationships of UHSFRC are presented in the axes of orthotropy which coincide with the principal axes of the total strain and rotate according to the loading history. This paper introduces a criterion to simulate the tension-stiffening effect on the basis of the force equilibriums, compatibility conditions, and bond stress-slip relationship in an idealized axial member and its efficiency is validated by comparison with available experimental data. Finally, the applicability of the proposed numerical model is established through correlation studies between analytical and experimental results for idealized UHSFRC beams.
