  • MoSi2 heating elements were fabricated by sintering of MoSi2 powders which were synthesized through SHS(Self-propagating high-temperature synthesis). Their high-temperature oxidation behavior in air through SHS(Self-propagating high-temperature synthesis). Their high-temperature oxidation behavior on air at 1000-1600$^{\circ}C$ was investigated through a high-temperature X-ray diffractomer and isothermal heating in a muffle furnace. The thermal expansion of MoSi2 and SiO2 was studied by measuring their lattice parameters on heating. The linear expansion coeffcient of MoSi2 along c-axis was about 1.5 times larger than that along a-axis showing a strong thermal anisotropy. Few $\mu\textrm{m}$-thick Mo5Si3 layer was found beneath SiO2 layer suggesting that The major reaction products would be SiO2 and Mo5Si3. The Si-rich bentonite resulted in the faster growth of MoSi2 grains probably by enhancing the mass transport when they are melted during high-temperature oxidation.

  • This study examined the effects of environmental conditions and the presence of refractory organic matter on oxidation rates of total organic carbon (TOC) measurements based on high temperature combustion and ultraviolet-sulfate methods. Spectroscopic indices for prediction of oxidation rates were also explored using the UV spectra and fluorescence excitation-emission matrix (EEM) of humic acids. Furthermore, optimum TOC instrument conditions were suggested by comparing oxidation rates of a standard TOC material under various conditions. Environmental conditions included salts, reduced ions, and suspended solids. Salts had the greatest influence on oxidation rates in the UV-sulfate method. However, no effect was detected in the high temperature combustion method. The UV-sulfate method showed lower humic substance oxidation rates, refractory natural organic matter, compared to the other methods. TOC oxidation rates for the UV-sulfate method were negatively correlated with higher specific-UV absorbance, humification index, and humic-like EEM peak intensities, suggesting that these spectroscopic indices could be used to predict TOC oxidation rates. TOC signals from instruments using the UV-sulfate method increased with increasing chamber temperature and increasing UV exposure durations. Signals were more sensitive to the former condition, suggesting that chamber temperature is important for improving the TOC oxidation rates of refractory organic matter.

  • This paper describes evaluation of oxidation stability for diesel engine oils by Hot-tube oxidation tester at high temperature. Evaluation was rated by visual inspection of lacquer in capillary glass tube and TAN determination of used oil. Air, NO$_2$-air and SO$_2$-air mixed gases were used as oxidizing gas. One oil which has low oxidation stability is selected and reformulated by addition of some additives such as antioxidant, detergent and disperant to improve oxidation stability. As a results of reformulation, antioxidant and detergent was effective for improvement of high temperture oxidation stability on diesel engine oil.

  • The electrochemical behavior of dissolved hydrogen (H2) was investigated at a Pt electrode in a high temperature LiOH-H3BO3 solution. The diffusion current of the H2 oxidation was proportional to the concentration of the dissolved H2 as well as the reciprocal of the temperature. In the polarization curve, a potential region in which the oxidation current decreases despite an increase in the applied potential between the H2 oxidation and the water oxidation regions was observed. This potential region was interpreted as being caused by the formation of a Pt oxide layer. Using the properties of the Cl- ion that reduces the growth rate of the Pt oxide layer, it was confirmed that there is a correlation between the Cl- ion concentration and the transient current of the H2 oxidation.

  • Influence of post gate oxidation anneal on Negative Bias Temperature Instability (NBTI) of PMOSFE has been investigated. At oxidation anneal temperature raised above 950$^{\circ}$C, a significant improvement of NBTI was observed which enables to reduce PMO V$\_$th/ shift occurred during a Bias Temperature (BT) stress. The high temperature anneal appears to suppress charge generations inside the gate oxide and near the silicon oxide interface during the BT stress. By measuring band-to-band tunneling currents and subthreshold slopes, reduction of oxide trapped charges and interface states at the high temperature oxidation anneal was confirmed.

  • Oxidation resistance of sintered ${\beta}-FeSi_{2}$ was investigated at intermediate temperature range in air atmosphere. Fully dense and porous bodies of ${\beta}-FeSi_{2}$ samples were fabricated by using the Spark Plasma Sintering (SPS). They were annealed at $900^{\circ}C$ for 5days to obtain ${\beta}-FeSi_{2}$ phase. The bulk samples were oxidized at $800,\;900\;and\;950^{\circ}C$ in air atmosphere. The high temperature oxidation tests reveal that amorphous $SiO_{2}$ layer, similar to Si was formed and grew parabolically on ${\beta}-FeSi_{2}$. Accelerated oxidation is not observed as well as cracks and grain boundary oxidation. Granular ${\varepsilon}-FeSi$ was developed below the oxide layer as a result of oxidation of ${\beta}-FeSi_{2}$. Oxidation resistance of sintered ${\beta}-FeSi_{2}$ was excellent for high-temperature thermoelectric application.

  • Structural changes of high modulus carbon fiber by oxidation in carbon dioxide gas using SEM, TEM, and XRD have been observed. It was shown that the originally high modulus carbon fiber is composed of highly ordered graphitic crystalline area and non-crystalline area. It was observed that the La increases during the whole oxidation process. It was shown that the oxidation of high modulus carbon fiber initiates at the non-crystalline area and at the ends of fiber. The large pores developed in fiber by direction of fiber length at high temperature ($1,100^{\circ}C$), and the small pores developed on the fiber surface at low temperature ($900^{\circ}C$). In conclusion, it is found that the oxidation of the carbon fiber was progressed through the imperfection.

  • Zircaloy cladding oxidation is an important phenomenon for both design basis accident and severe accidents, because it results in cladding embrittlement and rapid fuel temperature escalation. For this reason during the last decade, many experts have been conducting experiments to identify the oxidation phenomena that occur under design basis accidents and to develop mathematical analysis models. However, since the study of design extension conditions (DEC) is relatively insufficient, it is essential to develop and validate a physical and mathematical model simulating the oxidation of the cladding material at high temperatures. In this study, the QUENCH-05 and -06 experiments were utilized to develop the best-fitted oxidation model and to validate the SPACE code modified with it under the design extension condition. It is found out that the cladding temperature and oxidation thickness predicted by the Cathcart-Pawel oxidation model at low temperature (T < 1853 K) and Urbanic-Heidrick at high temperature (T > 1853 K) were in excellent agreement with the data of the QUENCH experiments. For 'LOCA without SI' (Safety Injection) accidents, which should be considered in design extension conditions, it has been performed the evaluation of the operator action time to prevent core melting for the APR1400 plant using the modified SPACE. For the 'LBLOCA without SI' and 'SBLOCA without SI' accidents, it has been performed that sensitivity analysis for the operator action time in terms of the number of SIT (Safety Injection Tank), the recovery number of the SIP (Safety Injection Pump), and the break sizes for the SBLOCA. Also, with the extended acceptance criteria, it has been evaluated the available operator action time margin and the power margin. It is confirmed that the power can be enabled to uprate about 12% through best-estimate calculations.

  • The B2-ordered NiAl has attracted much attention as one of the candidates as a next generation high temperature material, because it has a high melting temperature, a low specific gravity and an excellent high temperature oxidation resistance. However, the application of NiAl to structural materials needs the improvement of its brittleness at room temperature. The study was carried out on the relation between several properties of NiAl and some variation of Ni content within NiAl phase, which means deviations from the stoichiometric composition. The main results were as follows; (i) Good ductility was obtained at the testing temperature more than 1073 K irrespective of Ni content. (ii) Increasing Ni content offered preferable tensile properties. (iii) Every NiAl with varying Ni contents showed the superior oxidation resistance.

  • Stainless steels are widely selected as commercial engineering materials mainly because of their excellent corrosion resistance, oxidation resistance and strength. Because the manufacturing temperature of stainless steels is relatively high, the chemical and physical properties of the oxide film which was formed on the stainless steels are of importance in determining the rate of oxidation and the life of equipment exposed to high temperature oxidizing environments. In this study, the oxidation behavior of S. S. 304 and S. S. 430 added by a small amount of oxygen active elements(each +0.5wt% Hf and Y) was studied to improve oxidation resistance. The results of cyclic and isothermal oxidation on S. S. 304 added by OAE showed relatively poor oxidation resistance due to spallations and cracks of $Cr_2O_3$ layer. But all S. S. 430+0.5wt% OAE maintained constant oxidation rates and stable oxide layers at high temperature environment. Especially S. S. 430+0.5wt% Y formed a $Cr_2O_3$ oxide layer and improved cyclic oxidation resistance preventing loss of protective layers about 1000 hours at $1000^{\circ}C$
