Effect of Population Dispersion from Metropolitan Area by Opening KTX - The Seoul-Pusan High-Speed Railway - (고속철도가 수도권 인구분산에 미치는 영향 - 경부선을 중심으로 -)

  • The KTX has been launched one month ago and people can travel much faster and further. There are two opinions which are the dispersion and the concentration of metropolitan population. These contrary opinions were disputed against each other before launching KTX. The phenomena of metropolitan population concentration socially made many problems as it was already pointed out on many papers. So accurate prediction is very important. Thus, this study will predict how KTX will affect the dispersion of metropolitan population focused on highly populated Seoul-Pusan Railway. It will achieved by comparing and analysing foreign cases.

KTX Passenger Demand Forecast with Intervention ARIMA Model (개입 ARIMA 모형을 이용한 KTX 수요예측)

  • This study proposed the intervention ARIMA model as a way to forecast the KTX passenger demand. The second phase of the Gyeongbu high-speed rail project and the financial crisis in 2008 were analyzed in order to determine the effect of time series on the opening of a new line and economic impact. As a result, the financial crisis showed that there is no statistically significant impact, but the second phase of the Gyeongbu high-speed rail project showed that the weekday trips increased about 17,000 trips/day and the weekend trips increased about 26,000 trips/day. This study is meaningful in that the intervention explained the phenomena affecting the time series of KTX trip and analyzed the impact on intervention of time series quantitatively. The developed model can be used to forecast the outline of the overall KTX demand and to validate the KTX O/D forecasting demand.

  • Since the KTX was in operation in 2004, a number of researches on increasing the train speed have been conducted. Currently, the Honam High-speed train system is designed for the operation velocity of 350km/h. The societal demand expects higher operation speed, whereas the existing construction method and design specification are questioned in the KTX operation in the velocity over 350 km/h. In this study, a full-scale model test was conducted to obtain the preliminary data that is necessary to understand deformation characteristics of the reinforced road bed and the subgrade layers. In the full-scale model test, direct arrival seismic tests, crosshole seimic test, in-situ bender element test and sensing bar test were employed to measure the stiffness and deformation of the trackbed. The systematic analysis on the different set of measurements enhances the understanding of the behavior of the trackbed.

Study on Analysis of Operating Characteristics of Motor Block While KTX is Moving at Neutral Section of Kyung-Bu High Speed Line (경부고속선 절연구간에서 KTX 운행중 모터블럭의 동작특성 분석)

  • Traction power is supplied by three-phase alternating current of 154 kV power grid and electric trains are operated on single phase feeding system. It becomes important to use all the three phases equally and convert them into two-phase electric power (90 degree phase rotation) for traction supply. This is achieved by special transformer from the adjacent traction substation which is separated by a neutral section. Neutral section locations are in front of the substation and between the two substations. The first stage of the Seoul-Busan high-speed railway, design curve radius is larger than 7,000 m and the greatest slope is 25‰. The railway track conditions are evaluated as good enough to install a neutral section at the first stage, but a few factors of coasting operation of the train should be considered at the second stage of Seoul-Busan high-speed railway. The neutral section was located at Kim-cheon substation, which made some neutral section problems produced by the operating train, and the neutral section was moved about 1.5 km to the south toward Dong Dae-gu station due to the track operation condition. Some of the trains which stopped at the existing Kim-cheon Gu-mi station produced another motor block failure after moving the neutral section. In this paper, power quality, system performance and track condition, etc. are suggested to solve the problems.

친환경 교통수단으로서 KTX의 역할과 기대

  • Green gas emissions Trading System(ETS) came into effect in the Europe last year 2005. All transport modes have tried to reduce green gas emission and EU member countries are promoting the use of environmental friendly transport mode to avoid economic loss due to green gas emission. Besides ETS, rapidly rising of oil price and peak oil urge to invest more in the environmental friendly public transport mode and to discourage the use of private cars. The operation of KTX is estimated to bring external cost reduction up to 570 bil. won in 2004 based on European external unit costs of transport modes. This result implies that the expansion of high speed rail network and reconsideration of East-West high speed rail network which is not considered because of weak economic validity is required.

The Feasibility Study of the Scenario of 400kph Maximum Speed Test in HEMU (High-speed Electric Multiple Unit) System (400km/h급 전차선로 시스템의 시범적용 구간선정 연구)

  • Since the "Low Carbon, Green Growth" as a social requirements is attracted public attention, the policies and investments of the railway which have been less estimated than road is re-considered. Since the starting the commercial service (2004. April), the KTX have been operated successfully while transport passengers over 100million for years. And also the project for development of KHST (Korea High Speed Train ; G7) had been accomplished with a good result, the first trainset of KTX-II which base on G7 project was manufactured and testing now. On the other hand, the world's technology of the high speed train is more faster, and changing to a distributed traction system. To catch up the world's leading technology, the HEMU(High-speed Electric Multiple Unit) project will secure new technology and aims to promote the technology of domestic high-speed train. The authors indicates the result of detail review such as a curve, slope of the track and electrical dead section of the catenary to test at 400kph and also the performance simulation of the developed rolling stock in this paper. As the result, the authors devise the test scenario to perform a maximum speed test (stability at max. speed, acceleration & deceleration etc) with the restricted conditions such as track length, track available time etc by considering above result.

  • This paper describes the instruments used, and the test procedures adopted, and the findings obtained from a research project aiming to investigate, via full-scale field tests, the ground borne vibration caused by underground railway tunnel constructed in hard rock. The ground borne vibration induced by high-speed trains (i.e. the Korea Train eXpress (KTX) services) with a speed of approximately 200km/hr was measured inside the borehole constructed in the close proximity to the KTX tunnel using 3-component borehole seismographs in order to investigate the wave propagation of ground borne vibration. This paper also discusses the limitation associated with the current practice of measuring ground borne vibration using conventional borehole seismograph.

  • When high speed train runs on heavy curvature section of conventional line, squeal noise emitted from the railroad and wheel. This noise is very unpleasant to the near habitant. In this study, the characteristics and the countermeasures of the squeal noise of high speed train running on the conventional line was investigated.

  • During the design phase of a system, which requires high reliability and safety such as aircraft, high speed train and nuclear power plant, reliability engineer must set up the target system reliability. To meet a reliability goal for the system, reliability allocation should be done gradually from the system to its element. For this end, first of all, we need to construct functional block diagram based on the design output and PWBS(Project Work Breakdown System). Another important input data for reliability allocation is the relationship between the cost and the reliability. In this study we investigate various reliability allocation models, which can be applicable to aircraft, vehicle, and power plant, and etc. And we suggest a proper reliability allocation model which can be effectively applicable to KTX-II high speed train to achieve the target system reliability.
