An attempt to derive the surface temperature from the Korea Multi-purpose Satellite (KOMPSAT)-3A mid-wave infrared (MWIR) data acquired over the southern California on Nov. 14, 2015 has been made using the MODerate resolution atmospheric TRANsmission (MODTRAN) radiative transfer model. Since after the successful launch on March 25, 2015, the KOMPSAT-3A spacecraft and its two payload instruments - the high-resolution multispectral optical sensor and the scanner infrared imaging system (SIIS) - continue to operate properly. SIIS uses the MWIR spectral band of 3.3-5.2 ㎛ for data acquisition. As input data for the realistic simulation of the KOMPSAT-3A SIIS imaging conditions in the MODTRAN model, we used the National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP) atmospheric profiles, the KOMPSAT-3Asensor response function, the solar and line-of-sight geometry, and the University of Wisconsin emissivity database. The land cover type of the study area includes water, sand, and agricultural (vegetated) land located in the southern California. Results of surface temperature showed the reasonable geographical pattern over water, sand, and agricultural land. It is however worthwhile to note that the surface temperature pattern does not resemble the top-of-atmosphere (TOA) radiance counterpart. This is because MWIR TOA radiances consist of both shortwave (0.2-5 ㎛) and longwave (5-50 ㎛) components and the surface temperature depends solely upon the surface emitted radiance of longwave components. We found in our case that the shortwave surface reflection primarily causes the difference of geographical pattern between surface temperature and TOA radiance. Validation of the surface temperature for this study is practically difficult to perform due to the lack of ground truth data. We therefore made simple comparisons with two datasets over Salton Sea: National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) field data and Salton Sea data. The current estimate differs with these datasets by 2.2 K and 1.4 K, respectively, though it seems not possible to quantify factors causing such differences.

The LEOP Cal/Val (Launch and Early Operation Phase Calibration/Validation) was carried out during 6 months after KOMPSAT-3A (KOMPSAT-3A Korea Multi-Purpose Satellite-3A) was launched in March 2015. After LEOP Cal/Val was successfully completed, high resolution KOMPSAT-3A has been successfully distributing to users over the past 8 years. The sub-meter high-resolution satellite image data obtained from KOMPSAT-3A is used as basic data for qualitative and quantitative information extraction in various fields such as mapping, GIS (Geographic Information System), and national land management, etc. The KARI (Korea Aerospace Research Institute) periodically checks and manages the quality of KOMPSAT-3A's product and the characteristics of satellite hardware to ensure the accuracy and reliability of information extracted from satellite data of KOMPSAT-3A. To minimize the deterioration of image quality due to aging of satellite hardware, payload and attitude sensors of KOMPSAT-3A, continuous improvement of image quality has been carried out. In this paper, the Cal/Val work-flow defined in the KOMPSAT-3A development phase was illustrated for the period of before and after the launch. The MTF, SNR, and location accuracy are the key parameters to estimate image quality and the methods of the measurements of each parameter are also described in this work. On the basis of defined quality parameters, the performance was evaluated and measured during the period of after LEOP Cal/Val. The current status and characteristics of MTF, SNR, and location accuracy of KOMPSAT-3A from 2016 to May 2020 were described as well.

The Flight Model (FM) of a high-resolution electro-optical camera (EOS-C Ver.3.0), the mission payload of an Earth observation satellite, was successfully developed by Satrec Initiative. We designed it to give improved thermal representatives compared with the Structural-Thermal Model (STM) by optimizing the thermal characteristics based on the STM thermal vacuum test results. We developed the FM and verified the workmanship by performing the acceptance level thermal vacuum test. We also conducted the verification of its Thermal Mathematical Model (TMM) by the thermal balance test. As the result, it was confirmed that TMM faithfully represents the thermal characteristics of the EOS-C Ver.3.0 FM.

Koh Chang Island is located near the east border of Thailand. The government of Thailand promotes the island as a model of eco-tourism spots. The Island undeveloped until recent years, is expected to change to major tourist attraction. 'Digital Koh Chang project' has thus. The main objective of this project is to monitor the environment and land use status of the island and to support its sound development. In March 2003, a field survey of this project was planned and field data were collected using both airborne and ground platforms and an ocean vessel. These data were combined with satellite data in the laboratory. This presentation is all balloon-born system field operation. A 5-meter length balloon filled with Helium gas was used, whose payload consisted of two RGB standard color digital still cameras, two directional rotating servo motors, a camera mount cradle as well as signal transmitting and receiving components. A series of aerial high-resolution digital images were rather easily obtained using this inexpensive system, making it possible to monitor intended landscape features in a specific field. Design of simple, low-cost and easily transportable flying platforms and local field surveys using them are useful for getting local ground truth data to calibrate satellite or airborne-based RS data. The design analysis to upgrade the system is further investigated.

The dual-stream based stereoscopic 3D HDTV broadcasting service was launched recently. Although the dual-stream based HDTV service has been successfully provided, the 3D HDTV broadcasting system requires more bandwidth efficient transmission schemes because it should convey both left and right HD resolution images simultaneously in the finite 6MHz bandwidth. In this paper, we consider more advanced ATSC transmission schemes that use higher modulation such as 16-QAM and concatenated RS code and block LDPC codes. Compared with conventional ATSC system and the modified ATSC system in [2], the proposed system has about 2.97dB and 1.12dB SNR gain at the payload data rate of 19.44Mbps compared with the existing ATSC system and the modified ATSC system [2]. Also, the proposed scheme requires only 1.05dB power increase for the 3D HDTV service, which is reasonable SNR increase value and applicable to the advanced 3D high definition broadcasting realization in limited 6MHz bandwidth.
Electro-Optical Camera(EOC) is the main payload of Korea Multi-Purpose SATellite(KOMPSAT) with the mission of cartography to build up a digital map of Korean territory including Digital Terrain Elevation Map(DTEM). This instrument which comprises EOC Sensor Assembly and EOC Electronics Assembly produces the panchromatic images of 6.6 m GSD with a swath wider than 17 km by push-broom scanning and spacecraft body pointing in a visible range of wavelength, 510 ~ 730 nm. The high resolution panchromatic image is to be collected for 2 minutes during 98 minutes of orbit cycle covering about 800 km along ground track, over the mission lifetime of 3 years with the functions of programmable rain/offset and on-board image data storage. The image of 8 bit digitization, which is collected by a full reflective type F8.3 triplet without obscuration, is to be transmitted to Ground Station at a rate less than 25 Mbps. EOC was elaborated to have the performance which meets or surpasses its requirements of design phase. The spectral response the modulation transfer function, and the uniformity of all the 2592 pixel of CCD of EOC are illustrated as they were measured for the convenience of end-user. The spectral response was measured with respect to each gain setup of EOC and this is expected to give the capability of generating more accurate panchromatic image to the EOC data users. The modulation transfer function of EOC was measured as greater than 16% at Nyquist frequency over the entire field of view which exceeds its requirement of larger than 10%, The uniformity that shows the relative response of each pixel of CCD was measured at every pixel of the Focal Plane Array of EOC and is illustrated for the data processing.

A high-resolution electro-optical camera system, EOS-C, is under development in Satrec Initiative. This system is the mission payload of a 400-kg Earth observation satellite. We designed this system to give improved opto-mechanical and thermal performance compared with a similar camera system to be flown on the DubaiSat-1 system. The thermal control subsystem (TCS) of the EOS-C system uses heaters to meet the opto-mechanical requirements during in-orbit operation and it uses different thermal coating materials and multi-layer insulation (MLI) blankets to minimize the heater power consumption. We performed its thermal analysis for the mission orbit using a thermal analysis model and the result shows that its TCS satisfies the design requirements.
Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute The observation of particles and waves using a single satellite inherently suffers from space-time ambiguity. Recently, such ambiguity has often been resolved by multi-satellite observations; however, the inter-satellite distances were generally larger than 100 km. Hence, the ambiguity could be resolved only for large-scale (> 100 km) structures while numerous microscale phenomena have been observed at low altitude satellite orbits. In order to resolve those spatial and temporal variations of the microscale plasma structures on the topside ionosphere, SNIPE mission consisted of four (TBD) nanosatellites (~10 kg) will be launched into a polar orbit at an altitude of 700 km (TBD). Two pairs of satellites will be deployed on orbit and the distances between each satellite will be from 10 to 100 km controlled by a formation flying algorithm. The SNIPE mission is equipped with scientific payloads which can measure the following geophysical parameters: density/temperature of cold ionospheric electrons, energetic (~100 keV) electron flux, and magnetic field vectors. All the payloads will have high temporal resolution (~ 16 Hz (TBD)). This mission is planned to launch in 2020. The SNIPE mission aims to elucidate microscale (100 m-10 km) structures in the topside ionosphere (below altitude of 1,000 km), especially the fine-scale morphology of high-energy electron precipitation, cold plasma density/temperature, field-aligned currents, and electromagnetic waves. Hence, the mission will observe microscale structures of the following phenomena in geospace: high-latitude irregularities, such as polar-cap patches; field-aligned currents in the auroral oval; electro-magnetic ion cyclotron (EMIC) waves; hundreds keV electrons' precipitations, such as electron microbursts; subauroral plasma density troughs; and low-latitude plasma irregularities, such as ionospheric blobs and bubbles. We have developed a 6U nanosatellite bus system as the basic platform for the SNIPE mission. Three basic plasma instruments shall be installed on all of each spacecraft, Particle Detector (PD), Langmuir Probe (LP), and Scientific MAGnetometer (SMAG). In addition we now discuss with NASA and JAXA to collaborate with the other payload opportunities into SNIPE mission.
