In this paper, Korea's first geostationary Communication, Ocean and Meteorological Satellte(COMS) program is introduced. COMS program is one of the Korea National Space Programs to develop and operate a pure civilian satellite of practical-use for the compound missions of meteorological observation and ocean monitoring, and space test of experimentally developed communication payload on the geostationary orbit. The target launch of COMS is scheduled at the end of 2008. COMS program is international cooperation program between KARI and ASTRIUM SAS and funded by Korean Government. COMS satellite is a hybrid satellite in the geostationary orbit, which accommodates multiple payloads of MI(Meteorological Imager), GOCI(Geostationary Ocean Color Imager), and the Ka band Satellite Communication Payload into a single spacecraft platform. The MI mission is to continuously extract meteorological products with high resolution and multi-spectral imager, to detect special weather such as storm, flood, yellow sand, and to extract data on long-term change of sea surface temperature and cloud. The GOCI mission aims at monitoring of marine environments around Korean peninsula, production of fishery information (Chlorophyll, etc.), and monitoring of long-term/short-term change of marine ecosystem. The goals of the Ka band satellite communication mission are to in-orbit verify the performances of advanced communication technologies and to experiment wide-band multi-media communication service mandatory.
Image chain analysis of synthetic aperture radar (SAR) satellite is one of the primary activities for satellite design because SAR image quality depends on spacecraft bus performance as well as SAR payload. Especially, satellite pointing and stability error make worst effect on the original SAR image quality which is implemented by SAR payload design. In this research, Image chain analysis S/W was developed in order to analyze the SAR image quality degradation due to satellite pointing and stability error. This S/W consists of orbit model, attitude control model, SAR payload model, clutter model, and SAR processor. SAR raw data, which includes total 25 point targets in the scene of $5km{\times}5km$ swath width, was generated and then processed for analysis. High resolution mode (spotlight), of which resolution is 1m, was applied. The results of image chain analysis show that radiometric accuracy is the most degraded due to the pointing error. Therefore, the successful design of attitude control subsystem in spacecraft bus for enhancing the pointing accuracy is most important for image quality.
In order to tackle global environmental problems such as destruction of the ozone layer or climatic changes due to atmospheric temperature increase, the acquisition of plentiful and precise data is necessary. Therefore, a means of conducting long-lasting high-resolution measurements over broad areas is required. A feasibility study has been made on a high altitude (20km), super-pressured helium-filled PLTA (Powered Ligher-than-Air) vehicle as an ideal platform for environmental observation. It has a long service life and carries a larger payload than an artificial satellite. This PLTA platform uses an electric propulsion system to maintain position in space against wind currents. The thruster is driven by solar power acquired from solar cells. For night use, solar energy is stored in regenerative fuel cells. This study focuses on energy balance and structural analysis of the hull and platform. The platform is capable of conducting high resolution remote sensing as well as having the capability to serve as a telecommunications relay. The platform could replace a number of ground-based telecommunications relay facilities, guaranteeing sufficient radio frequency intensity to secure good quality telecommunication transmittal. The altitude at which the platform resides has the lowest wind flow in the lower stratosphere, and permits viewing from the ground within a 1,000km range. Because this altitude is much lower than that required of an artificial satellite, the measuring resolution is a couple of thousand times higher than with artificial satellites. The platform can also be used to chase typhoons and observe them from their sources in tropical regions.
Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) is a powerful and well established microwave remote sensing technique which enables high resolution measurements of the Earth surface independent of weather conditions and sunlight illumination. In this study, this paper first summarizes the basic SAR theory and the history of the SAR satellites. The second part of this paper gives an overview of new technologies for future SAR systems. New innovative concepts and technologies for SAR satellites will be digital beamforming, High Resolution Wide Swath (HRWS), Waveform Encoding, Terrain Observation by Progressive Scan (TOPS), and so on. These technologies will play an important role for future spaceborne SAR satellites.
Vibration is a source of performance degradation in all optical imaging systems. Performance of high resolution remote sensing payloads is often limited due to satellite platform vibrations. Effects of Linear and high frequency sinusoidal vibrations on the system MTF are known exactly in closed form but the low frequency vibration effects is a random process and must be considered statistically. Usually the vibration MTF budget is defined based on the mission requirements and the overall MTF limitations. For analyzing low frequency effects, designer must know all the systems specifications and parameters. With a good understanding of harmful vibration frequencies and amplitudes in the system preliminary design phase, their effects could be removed totally or partially. This procedure is cost effective and let the designer to eliminate just harmful vibrations and avoids over-designing. In this paper we have analyzed the effects of low-frequency platform vibrations on the payload's modulation transfer function. We have used a statistical analysis to find the probability of imaging with a MTF equal or greater than a pre-defined budget for different missions. The worst and average cases have been discussed and finally we have proposed "look-up figures". Using these look-up figures, designer can choose the electro-optical parameters in such a way that vibration effects be less than its pre-defined budget. Furthermore, using the results, we can propose a damping profile based on which vibration frequencies and amplitudes must be eliminated to stabilize the payload system.

A 6-bit MMIC digital attenuator applicable to X-band TR module has been developed by using $0.5{\mu}m$GaAs pHEMT processes. The Switched-T attenuator scheme and the switched-path attenuator scheme were adopted to obtain low insertion loss and small phase variation, respectively. Resistors and transmission lines are optimized to achieve the digital attenuator with high attenuation accuracy and small phase variation. The digital attenuator has RMS error of 0.4dB, resolution of 0.5dB and dynamic range of 31.5dB. The measurement results show that in-out VSWRs are less than 1.5, phase variation is from -7 to +2 degrees and IIP3 is 36.5dBm.
As a unique payload of Komsat-2, MSC, comprising EOS(Electro-Optical Sub-system), PMU(Payload Management Unit) and PDTS(Payload Data Transmission Sub-system), is supposed to take pictures of one panchromatic and 4 multi-spectral image between wavelength 450mm~900mm, and is being under final Satellite I&T. It will perform the earth remote sensing with applications such as acquisition of high resolution images, surveillance of large scale disasters and its countermeasure, survey of natural resources, etc.. Under the hostile influence of the extreme space environmental conditions due to deep space and direct solar flux, the thermal design is especially of major importance in designing a payload. There are tight temperature range restrictions for electro-optical elements while on the other hand there are low power consumption requirements due to the limited energy source on the spacecraft. This paper describes details of thermal control system for MSC.
The mission of the high-resolution camera for the lunar exploration is to provide 3D topographic information. It enables us to find the appropriate landing site or to control accurate landing by the short distance stereo image in real-time. In this paper, the ground verification and analysis system using the multi-application stereo camera to develop the high-resolution camera for the lunar exploration are proposed. The mission test items and test plans for the mission requirement are provided and the test results are analyzed by the ground verification and analysis system. For the realistic simulation for the lunar orbiter, the target area that has similar characteristics with the real lunar surface is chosen and the aircraft flight is planned to take image of the area. The DEM is extracted from the stereo image and compose three dimensional results. The high-resolution camera mission requirements for the lunar exploration are verified and the ground data analysis system is developed.

A spacecraft contends with various vibration from the launch to the on-orbit operation, which is one of the major considerations in spacecraft design. The weight reduction has been indispensable to decrease the launch cost, however it produces worse disturbances for the spacecraft equipments. Besides, the load requirements at observation payload interfaces have became severe to secure their pointing stability as their images are required with high resolution. As a possible solution, a vibration isolation system is introduced and it reduces the vibration from the launch vehicle or isolates the spacecraft equipments from their generating/transmitted vibration. In this paper, it is examined the design consideration needed for the accommodation of the vibration isolation systems through the survey of recent applications of vibration mitigation technologies to spacecrafts.
This paper describes the development, operations, and applications of ROCSAT-l and its Ocean Color Imager (OCI) remote-sensing payload. It is the first satellite program of NSPO. The satellite was successfully launched by Lockheed Martin's Athena on January 26, 1999 from Cape Canaveral, Florida. ROCSAT-l is a Low Earth Orbit (LEO) experimental satellite. Its circular orbit has an altitude of 600km and an inclination angle of 35 degrees. The satellite is designed to carry out scientific research missions, including ocean color imaging, experiments on ionospheric plasma and electrodynamics, and experiments using Ka-band (20∼30GHz) communication payloads. The OCI payload is utilized to observe the ocean color in 7 bands (including one redundant band) of Visible and Near-Infrared (434nm∼889nm) range with the resolution of 800m at nadir and the swath of 702km. It employs high performance telecentric optics, push-broom scanning method using Charge Coupled Devices (CCD) and large-scale integrated circuit chips. The water leaving radiance is estimated from the total inputs to the OCI, including the atmospheric scattering. The post-process estimates the water leaving radiance and generates different end products. The OCI has taken images since February 1999 after completing the early orbit checkout. Analyses have been performed to evaluate the performances of the instrument in orbit and to compare them with the pre-launch test results. This paper also briefly describes the ROCSAT-l mission operations. The spacecraft operating modes and ROCSAT Ground Segment operations are delineated, and the overall initial operations of ROCSAT-l are summarized.
