  • Since the rigid and continuous networks of high-purity silica(white carbon) were relatively transparent to microwaves, high purity silica coupled with microwaves using a zirconia susceptor at room temperature and it was then heated to its melting temperature. The low-purity silica, contained small amount of impurities, yielded greater microwave absorption owing to easy motion of the interstitial alkali ions and it was then heated to its melting temperature. X-ray diffraction patterns of the low-purity silica were broader than those of the high-purity silica due to higher concentration of non-bridging bond and more deformed random network structure. In the vulcanization process of whitened or coloured rubber compound which is employing low-purity silica(white carbon) as a reinforcing filler, vulcanizate could be obtained effectively by microwave heating energy.

  • Silica nano-powder (SNP) is an inorganic material able to provide high-performance in various fields because of its multiple functions. Methods used to synthesize high purity SNP, include crushing silica minerals, vapor reaction of silica chloride, and a sol-gel process using TEOS and sodium silicate solution. The sol-gel process is the cheapest method for synthesis of SNP, and was used in this study. First, we investigated the shape and the size of the silica-powder particles in relation to the variation of HCl and sodium silicate concentrations. After drying, the shape of nano-silica powder differed in relation to variations in the HCl concentration. As the pH of the solution increased, so did the density of crosslinking. Initially, there was NaCl in the SNP. To increase its purity, we adopted a washing process that included centrifugation and filtration. After washing, the last of the NaCl was removed using DI water, leaving only amorphous silica powder. The purity of nano-silica powder synthesized using sodium silicate was over 99.6%.

  • Recently, silica nanostructures are widely used in various applicationary areas such as chemical sensors, biosensors, nano-fillers, markers, catalysts, and as a substrate for quantum dots etc, because of their excellent physical, chemical and optical properties. Additionally, these days, semiconductor silica and silicon with high purity is a key challenge because of their metallurgical grade silicon (MG-Si) exhibit purity of about 99% produced by an arc discharge method with high cast. Tremendous efforts are being paid towards this direction to reduce the cast of high purity silicon for generation of photovoltaic power as a solar cell. In this direction, which contains a small amount of impurities, which can be further purified by acid leaching process. In this regard, initially the low cast rice-husk was cultivated from local rice field and washed well with high purity distilled water and were treated with acid leaching process (1:10 HCl and $H_2O$) to remove the atmospheric dirt and impurity. The acid treated rice-husk was again washed with distilled water and dried in an oven at $60^{\circ}C$. The dried rice-husk was further annealed at different temperatures (620 and $900^{\circ}C$) for the formation of silica nanospheres. The confirmation of silica was observed by the X-ray diffraction pattern and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The morphology of obtained nanostructures were analyzed via Field-emission scanning electron microscope(FE-SEM) and Transmission electron microscopy(TEM) and it reveals that the size of each nanosphares is about 50-60nm. Using the Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry(ICP-MS), Silica was analyzed for the amount of impurities.

  • The objective of this investigation was to separate silicon and silica for recycling by the liquid-liquid separation technique. In the preparation of silicon (Si) single crystal, a small amount of silicon is fixed on the surface of silica (quartz, $SiO_2$) crucible. The used crucible is crushed for recycling both silicon and silica in a high purity from the mixed powder. Zeta-potential of silicon and silica are almost the same at pH higher than 3. Their separation by simple flotation is ruled out. However, their hydrophobic characteristics are different in several different organic solvent from the measurement of contact angle. Therefore, the liquid-liquid extraction is employed to separate silicon and silica. The result indicates that the organic solvent mixed with dodecyl ammonium acetate could extracted the silicon powder at high purity (97-100%) with high recovery from the silica powder in the water phase.

Mineralogical Analysis and Mechano-Chemical Purification of Natural Silica Ore for High Purity Silica Powder

  • To produce 4N grade high-purity silica powder from natural ore, the mineralogical characteristics of natural silica ore were investigated and their effects on the purification process were revealed. The Chinese silica mineral ore used was composed of iron and aluminum as main impurities and calcium, magnesium, potassium, sodium, and titanium as trace impurities; these trace impurities generally exist as either single oxides or complex oxides. It was confirmed that liberation and acidic washing of the impurities were highly dependent on the particle size of the ground silica ore and on its mineralogical characteristics such as the distribution and phases of existing impurities. It is suggested that appropriate size reduction of silica ore should be realized for optimized purification according to the origin of the natural silica ore. A single step purification process, the mechano-chemical washing (MCW) process, was proposed and verified in comparison with the conventional multi step washing process.

금(金) 광산(鑛山) 광미(鑛尾)로부터 유가자원(有價資源) 회수(回收)에 관한 연구(硏究) (Recovery of Valuable Materials from Gold Mine Tailings)

  • 가행중인 금(gold) 광산에서 발생하는 광미(tailing)로부터 금 및 실리카와 같은 유가자원을 회수하기 위해 선별특성을 검토하였다. 금 선별에는 고비증액(heavy liquid}을 이용한 비중선별(gravity separation)을 하였고, 실리카 선별에는 하이드로싸이클론을 이용한 분급/비중선별, 부유선별(froth-flotation) 그리고 마찰대전형 정전선별 (triboelectrostatic separation)을 하였다. 실험결과 금은 비중액의 비중이 2.72일 때 품위가 최고 5.58 g/ton인 정광을 약 3 wt.% 회수하였으며, $SiO_2$의 함량이 약 94%인 고순도 실리카를 회수할 수 있었다. 따라서, 본 연구를 통하여 환경을 훼손하는 광미의 감량 및 무해화는 물론 유가자원 회수를 위한 공정을 수립 할 수 있을 것으로 기대된다.

점토광물로부터 알루미나 및 비정질 실리카 제조에 관한 연구 (Preparation of Alumina and Amorphous Silica from Clay Minerals)

  • High purity alumina and amorphous silica were prepared from Ha-dong kaolin by means of appliance of sulfuric acid. The effect of sulfuric acid concentration, reaction temperature and reaction time on the formation of aluminum sulfate was investigated. The precipitation conditions ofaluminum sulfate from the sulfuric acid solution with ethanol and ammonium hydroxide were deteremined. In the optimum condition, the conversion of aluminum oxide in kaolin to aluminum oxide powder was 85.0 percent. Alumina powder was prepared by calcination of the precipitates, and its purity was 99.0 percent.

  • 한국산 개비자나무로부터 새로운 개념의 homoharringtonine 분리 및 정제 공정을 개발하였다. 메탄올을 사용한 4회 반복 추출에 의해 biomass로부터 대부분(>99%)의 homoharringtonine을 회수 할 수 있었다. 흡착 공정에서는 활성 백토(active clay)를 사용하여 추출물에 포함되어 있는 식물유래 타르, 왁스 성분을 효과적으로 제거하였다. Silica gel low-pressure chromatography공정을 통해서 순도 52% 이상의 homoharringtonine을 얻었으며, HPLC 공정을 통해 고순도 및 고수율의 homharringtonine을 정제할 수 있었다. 정제된 homoharringtonine의 분자량 및 구조분석을 수행한 결과 표준물질(Homharringtonine)과 동일 물질임을 확인할 수 있었다.

가다랭이 안와조직으로부터 DHA의 추출 및 정제 (Isolation and Purification of DHA from Skipjack Orbital Tissue Oil)

  • 가다랭이 안와유로부터 docosahexaenoic acid(DHA)를 정제하기 위해 기존의 방법들을 적용하여 비교 검토하고, DHA의 효과적인 정제를 위해 조작방법을 개량하였다. 가다랭이 안와조직의 총지질은 $55.4\%$였으며, 이 중 DHA는 $23.7\%$였다. 저온분별결정법과 요소결정법을 적용한 결과 순도에서 각각 약 $46\%$$61\%$의 DHA가 얻어졌다. 이들 방법들은 순도면에서는 다소 떨어지나, 정제조작이 단순하여 다량의 DHA 분리에 적합하였다. 질산은 수용액법은 상기 2가지 방법에 비하여 순도면에서는 약간 개선되었으나, 회수율이 대단히 낮았다($10\%$ 이하). 질산은 함침 실리카 칼럼 크로마토그래피법은 고순도 DHA의 정제방법으로써 적합하였다(순도 $98\%$ 이상, 회수율 $90\%$ 이상). 결과적으로 저온분별결정법과 질산은 함침 실리카 칼럼 크로마토그래피법을 조합한 개량법(2단계 정제법)이 가다랭이 안와유로부터 고순도 DHA($99.9\%$)의 정제를 위한 가장 효과적인 방법으로 평가되었다.

초합금 단결정 주조용 주형의 실리카 함량에 따른 고온강도 영향 (The Influence of the Silica Contents for High Temperature Strength for Single Crystal Casting Mold of Superalloys)

  • 초합금의 진공정밀주조시에 진공하에서 용해한 합금을 $1000~1700^{\circ}C$로 가열한 세라믹 주형에 주입하고 난 후, 용탕이 장시간 주형안에 노출됨으로써, 주형의 고온강도가 높아야 하므로 고품위의 주형재를 사용하여 왔으나, 저품위의 값싼 소재를 사용하여 고품위의 주형과 동등한 효과를 갖게 하고자 주형내의 Silica 함량을 조절하였다. 그 결과 SiO2 첨가량이 7.7wt.%일 때, 다른 시험편에 비해 소성강도와 고온강도가 10-55%가량 증가 하였다. 따라서 일반적으로 정밀주조 주형으로 사용하는 용융알루미나와 colloidal silica의 혼합비를 제어하여 단결절 주조용 주형을 개발하였다.
