The heat capacity and pressure drop of $CO_2$ and coolant in a multi-tube type gas cooler were investigated experimentally. The main components of the refrigerant loop are a receiver, a $CO_2$ compressor, a mass flow meter, an evaporator and a multi-tube type gas cooler as a test section. The mass flowrate of $CO_2$ and coolant were varied from 0.06 to 0.075 [kg/s], respectively and the cooling pressure of gas cooler were from 8 to 10 [MPa]. The heat capacity of $CO_2$ in the test section is increased with the increment in mass flowrate of coolant, the cooling pressure and mass flowrate of $CO_2$. The pressure drop of $CO_2$ is decreased with the decrease in mass flowrate of coolant and $CO_2$, but decreased with increase in cooling pressure of $CO_2$. The heat capacity of $CO_2$ per unit heat transfer area of gas cooler is greatly high. Therefore, in case of the application of $CO_2$ at the multi-tube type gas cooler, it is expected to carry out the high-efficiency, high-performance and compactness of gas cooler.
This study investigated the microstructure and wear resistance property of HPHT(high pressure high temperature) sintered PDC(polycrystalline diamond compact) in accordance with initial molding pressure. After quantifying an identical amount of diamond powder, the powder was inserted in top of WC-Co sintered material, and molded under four different pressure conditions (50, 100, 150, $200kgf/cm^2$). The obtained diamond compact underwent sintering in high pressure, high temperature conditions. In the case of the $50kgf/cm^2$ initial molding pressure condition, cracks were formed on the surface of PDC. On the other hand, PDCs obtained from $100{\sim}200kgf/cm^2$ initial molding pressure conditions showed a meticulous structure. As molding pressure increased, low Co composition within PDC was detected. A wear resistance test was performed on the PDC, and the $200kgf/cm^2$ condition PDC showed the highest wear resistance property.
Mandarin juice was processed using a continuous high pressure $CO_2$ system. Response surface methodology was used to investigate the effects of the processing parameters such as temperature, pressure, residence time, and %(w/w) ratio of $CO_2$ to juice on total aerobic count (TAC), pectinesterase (PE) activity, cloud level, $^{\circ}Brix$, pH, and titratable acidity (TA) of the juices. Maximum log reduction (3.47) of TAC was observed at $35^{\circ}C$, 41.1 MPa, 9 min residence time, and 7% $CO_2$. PE was inactivated by 7-51%. The cloud was not only retained but was also enhanced by 38%. Lightness and yellowness increased, and redness decreased. The processing temperature and % $CO_2$/juice ratio significantly affected high pressure $CO_2$ processing of the juice in terms of pasteurization, PE inactivation, cloud increase, and color change. The $^{\circ}Brix$, pH, and TA before and after treatment remained unchanged.
Maximum production of isoquercetin and quercetin simultaneously from rutin by subcritical water hydrolysis (SWH) was optimized using the response surface methodology. Hydrolysis parameters such as temperature, time, and $CO_2$ pressure were selected as independent variables, and isoquercetin and quercetin yields were selected as dependent variables. The regression models of the yield of isoquercetin and quercetin were valid due to the high F-value and low P-value. Furthermore, the high regression coefficient indicated that the polynomial model equation provides a good approximation of experimental results. In maximum production of isoquercetin from rutin, the hydrolysis temperature was the major factor, and the temperature or time can be lower if the $CO_2$ pressure was increased high enough, thereby preventing the degradation of isoquercetin into quercetin. The yield of quercetin was considerably influenced by temperature instead of time and $CO_2$ pressure. The optimal condition for maximum production of isoquercetin and quercetin simultaneously was temperature of $171.4^{\circ}C$, time of 10.0 min, and $CO_2$ pressure of 11.0 MPa, where the predicted maximum yields of isoquercetin and quercetin were 13.7% and 53.3%, respectively. Hydrolysis temperature, time, and $CO_2$ pressure for maximum production of isoquercetin were lower than those of quercetin. Thermal degradation products such as protocatechuic acid and 2,5-dihydroxyacetophenone were observed due to pyrolysis at high temperature. It was concluded that rutin can be easily converted into isoquercetin and quercetin by SWH under $CO_2$ pressure, and this result can be applied for SWH of rutin-rich foodstuffs.
In this study, manganese dioxide (MnO2) nanoparticles were synthesized from KMnO4 and MnCl2·4H2O without any dispersing agents and oxidant via ultra-high pressure homogenization process. We investigated various physicochemical properties and CO oxidation reactions of the MnO2 nanoparticles as a function of the number of passes at 1,500 bar in a high pressure homogenizer nozzle. The observed X-ray diffraction patterns and scanning electron microscopy images revealed that the synthesized MnO2 nanoparticles had a hexagonal structure and a uniform spherical shape. It was found from the Brunauer-Emmett-Teller measurements that the pore size of the MnO2 nanoparticles ranged from 23.6 to 7.2 nm and their specific surface area ranged from 24 to 208 m2g-1. In particular, it was confirmed from the measurements of CO conversion into CO2 that CO oxidation reaction over the MnO2 nanoparticles exhibited excellent catalytic activity at low temperatures below 100℃.
We have investigated the effect of the experimental variables such as temperature and pressure on conformality of Co films deposited over high aspect ratio trenches using $Co_2(CO)_8$ as a precursor. The results show that the conformality of Co films is a strong function of temperature and process pressure. Lowering the pressure and temperature significantly improves the conformality. As the pressure decreases from 0.6 Torr to 0.2 Torr at $50^{\circ}C$, the bottom coverage of Co films over $0.2{\mu}m$ width trenches with an aspect ratio of 13 to 1 significantly increases to 85%. However, further increasing the temperature from 50 to $60^{\circ}C$ at the pressure of 0.2 Torr degrades the bottom coverage to 14%. In contrast, the extremely low pressure of 0.03 Torr allows the excellent conformal deposition of Co films up to $70^{\circ}C$. This can be attributed to the suppression of homogeneous reaction in the gas phase, which can create the intermediate products with high sticking coefficient. In addition, the Co films deposited at $50^{\circ}C$ show the low resistivity with negligible contamination. As a result, the newly developed Co process using MOCVD can be implemented into the next generation devices with complex shapes.
Research into natural refrigerants that use CO2, instead of chlorofluorocarbons and hydrofluorocarbons, has increased due to the environmental problems caused by ozone depletion. CO2 refrigerants are more environmentally friendly than conventional refrigerants because they have better latent heat of evaporation and heat transfer efficiency properties. However, they have very low critical temperatures and require high design pressures; therefore, pressure control valves, which reduce the pressure of the CO2 refrigerant to a safe level and apply it to the refrigerant air conditioning system, are necessary to secure stability against high pressure. In the present study, we evaluated the flow characteristics and valve performance of the pressure control valve using a CO2 refrigerant by measuring the pressure, velocity, and flow coefficient. In addition, we examined the applied forces caused by the internal pressure from the highly pressurized CO2 refrigerant and required thrust characteristics.
Pilot operated control valve for $CO_2$ refrigerant is a valve that can perform various functions according to the user's intention by replacing pilot units, widely used for flow rate, pressure, and temperature control of refrigeration and air conditioning systems. In addition, $CO_2$ refrigerant, that requires high pressure and low critical temperature, can be installed and used in all positions of the refrigeration system, regardless of high or low pressure. In this paper, response characteristics are modeled and analyzed based on behavior of the main piston of the pilot-operated control valve. Although various factors influence operation of the main piston, this paper analyzes the effect of equilibrium pressure depending on valve installation position and application, and inlet and outlet orifice size of the load pressure feedback chamber to determine feedback characteristics of the main piston. As a result, it was possible to quantitatively analyze the effect of change in equilibrium and load pressure feedback chamber flow path size on the change in main piston dynamic and static characteristics.
