  • Numerical analysis was carried out to investigate the effect of GDL (Gas diffusion layer) porosity on the performance of PEMFC (proton exchange membrane fuel cell). A complete three-dimensional model was chosen for single straight channel geometry including cooling channel. Main emphasis is placed on the heat and mass transfer through the GDL with different porosity. The present numerical results show that at high current densities, the cell voltage is influenced by the GDL porosity while the cell performance is nearly the same at low current densities. At high current densities, low value of GDL porosity results in decrease of the fuel cell performance since the diffusion of reactant gas through GDL becomes slow with decreasing porosity. On the other hand, for high GDL porosity, the effective thermal conductivity becomes low and the heat generated in the cell is not removed rapidly. This causes the temperature of fuel cell to increase and gives rise to dehydration of the membrane, and ultimately increase of the ohmic loss.

  • Threshold porosity above which fission gas release channels would be formed in the rim egion of high burnup UO$_2$ fuel was estimated by the Monte Carlo method and Hoshen-Kopelman algorithm. With the assumption that both rim pore and rim grain can be represented by cube, pore distribution in the rim was simulated 3-dimensionally by the Monte Carlo method according to porosity and pore size distribution. Then, using the Hoshen-Kopelman algorithm, the fraction of open rim pores interlinked to the outer surface of a fuel pellet was derived as a function of rim porosity. The simulation showed that porosity of 24-25% is the threshold above which the number of rim pores forming release channels increases very rapidly. On the other hand, channels would not be formed if the porosity is less than about 23.5%. This is consistent with the observation that, for porosity less than 23.5%, almost no fission gas is released in the rim. However, once the rim porosity reaches beyond 25%, extensive open paths would be developed and considerable fission gas release would start in the rim.

  • This paper was described on investigation to prevent porosity in high speed MIG Welding of Al 6082-T6. Porosity measurement was carried out by using image analysis of micrographs with the help of an analysis software. The main parameter was arc length and torch progressive angle. The porosity ratio was increased as arc length was increased. The arc length was increased depending upon the output voltage. By proper selection of pulse waveform parameter, the stable arc of one pulse one drop was generated. The porosity ratio of optimum condition in one pulse one drop was lower than high voltage condition. When torch progressive angle was an angle of advance $10^{\circ}$, porosity ratio was minium.

  • The wearing comfort of garment is governed by two kinds of characteristics such as moisture and thermal transport properties and mechanical properties of fabrics. The porosity influenced by yarn and fabric structural parameters is known as main factor for wearing comfort of garment related to the moisture and thermal transport properties. This study investigated effect of porosity of composite yarns to the moisture and thermal comfort properties of composite fabrics made of hollow composite DTY and ATY yarns. The theoretical porosity and pore size were inversely proportional to cover factor of fabric, but cover factor was not correlated with experimental pore size. The wicking property of hydrophobic PET filament fabric showed inferior result irrespective of porosity, pore size and cover factor. The drying rate was superior at composite fabrics with high pore size and low cover factor, and pore size was dominant factor for drying property. On the other hand, thermal conductivity of composite fabric was mainly influenced by cover factor and not influenced by porosity. Air permeability was influenced by both porosity and cover factor and was highly increased with increasing porosity and decreasing fabric cover factor.

  • Dehydration and micro crack thermal expansion occur in cement hydrates of concrete structure heated by fire for a long time. The characteristic of concrete exposed to high temperature can be analyzed from distribution of porosity and pore size. Porosity showed a tendency to increase irrespective of specimen types. This is due to both the outbreak of collapse of gel comprising the cement and a micro crack by heating. Porosity did not affect the variety of specimen and increased with the same tendency throughout every specimen. In addition, the deteriorate of compressive strength resulted from increase in porosity

  • There are many combination with the porosity of tipping paper and plug wrap for a design of ventilation rate of cigarette. This study was carried out to determine the effect of a design of permeability of tipping paper and inner or outer of plug wrap on the ventilation rate of cigarette with constant pressure drop in column part and filter part. Our results indicated that the higher the plugwrap porosity, the higher the ventilation rate and the less variable of cigarette in case of mono filter. But, in case of duel filter, the ventilation rate of cigarette was depended on the manufacturing method of filter plug, even though using the same porous plug wrap on inner and outer of filter. We also found that the porosity of outer plug wrap was more effect on the ventilation rate than the porosity of inner plug wrap. As the high porosity of inner plug wrap compared with the porosity of outer plug wrap, the less variable of ventilation rate of cigarette in any combination of the porosity of plug wrap. When we used the higher porous outer plug wrap than inner plug wrap, the ventilation rate of cigarette was high. Also, the higher the inner plug wrap porosity, the less variable of ventilation rate of cigarette.

  • This study proposes a method to analyze the distribution of coal porosity disturbances after the excavation of ultra-large-diameter water jet boreholes using a coal wetting and softening model. The high-pressure jet is regarded as a short-term high-pressure water injection process. The water injection range is the coal softening range. The time when the reference point of the borehole wall is shocked by the high-pressure water column is equivalent to the time of high-pressure water injection of the coal wall. The influence of roadway excavation with support and borehole diameter on the ultra-large-diameter jet drilling excavation is also studied. The coal core around the borehole is used to measure the gas permeability for determining the porosity disturbance distribution of the coal in the sampling plane to verify the correctness of the simulation results. Results show that the excavation borehole is beneficial to the expansion of the roadway excavation disturbance, and the expansion distance of the roadway excavation disturbance has a quadratic relationship with the borehole diameter. Wetting and softening of the coal around the borehole wall will promote the uniform distribution of the overall porosity disturbance and reduce the amplitude of disturbance fluctuations.

  • In this study, the carbonized aggregate of light weight and high mechanical strength using sewage sludge was evaluated with changing carbonation variables of temperature, detention time and feed condition. Porosity and mechanical strength was simultaneously increased according to increase of carbonization temperature unexpectedly. Carbonization detention time above 1 hour nearly affect on the porosity, but mainly on mechanical strength of the carbonized aggregate in case of clay addition. On $900^{\circ}C$, porosity and mechanical strength was increased rapidly, but above $1000^{\circ}C$, porosity began to decrease. Clay addition was very effective on increase of mechanical strength following much loss in porosity. The carbonized aggregate manufactured at $900^{\circ}C$ adding 30 % clay in sewage sludge was higher a little in porosity and 3 times in mechanical strength than those at $700^{\circ}C$ not adding clay. Consequently, in manufacturing the carbonized aggregate having simultaneously high porosity and mechanical strength, it is desirable to have operational condition of $900{\sim}1000^{\circ}C$ temperature and 1 hour time, and clay addition within 30 % for further higher mechanical strength.

  • The influences of mineral content and porosity on ultrasonic wave velocity were assessed for ten hornfelsic rocks collected from southern and western parts of the city of Hamedan, western Iran. Selected rock samples were subjected to mineralogical, physical, and index laboratory tests. The tested rocks contain quartz, feldspar, biotite, muscovite, garnet, sillimanite, kyanite, staurolite, graphite and other fine grained cryptocrystalline matrix materials. The values of dry unit weight of the rocks were high, but the values of porosity and water absorption were low. In the rocks, the values of dry unit weight are related to the presence of dense minerals such as garnet so not affected by porosity. The statistical relationships between mineral content, porosity and ultrasonic wave velocity indicated that the porosity is the most important factor influencing ultrasonic wave velocity of the studied rocks. The values of P-wave velocity of the rocks range from moderate to very high. Empirical equations, relevant to different parameters of the rocks, were proposed to determine the rocks' essential characteristics such as primary and secondary wave velocities. Quality indexes (IQ) of the studied samples were determined based on P-wave velocities of them and their composing minerals and the samples were classified as non-fissured to moderately fissured rocks. Also, all tested samples are classified as slightly fissured rocks according to the ratio of S-wave to P-wave velocities.

  • Objectives: This study aimed to compare and evaluate the porosity and pore size distribution of high-viscosity glass ionomer cements (HVGICs) and conventional glass ionomer cements (GICs) using micro-computed tomography (micro-CT). Materials and Methods: Forty cylindrical specimens (n = 10) were produced in standardized molds using HVGICs and conventional GICs (Ketac Molar Easymix, Vitro Molar, MaxxionR, and Riva Self-Cure). The specimens were prepared according to ISO 9917-1 standards, scanned in a high-energy micro-CT device, and reconstructed using specific parameters. After reconstruction, segmentation procedures, and image analysis, total porosity and pore size distribution were obtained for specimens in each group. After checking the normality of the data distribution, the Kruskal-Wallis test followed by the Student-Newman-Keuls test was used to detect differences in porosity among the experimental groups with a 5% significance level. Results: Ketac Molar Easymix showed statistically significantly lower total porosity (0.15%) than MaxxionR (0.62%), Riva (0.42%), and Vitro Molar (0.57%). The pore size in all experimental cements was within the small-size range (< 0.01 mm3), but Vitro Molar showed statistically significantly more pores/defects with a larger size (> 0.01 mm3). Conclusions: Major differences in porosity and pore size were identified among the evaluated GICs. Among these, the Ketac Molar Easymix HVGIC showed the lowest porosity and void size.
