Energy-resolved neutron imaging is an effective way to investigate the internal structure and residual stress of materials. Different sample sizes have varying requirements for the detector's imaging field of view (FOV) and spatial resolution. Therefore, a dual-mode energy-resolved neutron imaging detector was developed, which mainly consisted of a neutron scintillator screen, a mirror, imaging lenses, and a time-stamping optical fast camera. This detector could operate in a large FOV mode or a high spatial resolution mode. To evaluate the performance of the detector, the neutron wavelength spectra and the multiple spatial resolution tests were conducted at CSNS. The results demonstrated that the detector accurately measured the neutron wavelength spectra selected by a bandwidth chopper. The best spatial resolution was about 20 ㎛ in high spatial resolution mode after event reconstruction, and a FOV of 45.0 mm × 45.0 mm was obtained in large FOV mode. The feasibility was validated to change the spatial resolution and FOV by replacing the scintillator screen and adjusting the lens magnification.
Gadolinium oxysulfide (GOS) is regarded as a novel scintillator for the realization of ultra-high spatial resolution in neutron imaging. Monte Carlo simulations of GOS scintillator show that the capability of its spatial resolution is towards the micron level. Through the time-of-flight method, the light output of a GOS scintillator was measured to be 217 photons per captured neutron, ~100 times lower than that of a ZnS/LiF:Ag scintillator. A detector prototype has been developed to evaluate the imaging solution with the GOS scintillator by neutron beam tests. The measured spatial resolution is ~36 ㎛ (28 line pairs/mm) at the modulation transfer function (MTF) of 10%, mainly limited by the low experimental collimation ratio of the beamline. The weak light output of the GOS scintillator requires an enormous increase in the neutron flux to reduce the exposure time for practical applications.
The simulated spent PWR fuel pellet which is corresponding to the turnup of 33,000 MWD/MTU is prepared by adding 11 fission-product elements to UO$_2$. The simulated spent fuel pellet is treated at 40$0^{\circ}C$ in air (oxidation), at 110$0^{\circ}C$ in air (high-temperature treatment), and at $600^{\circ}C$ in hydrogen (reduction). The product is treated through additional addition and reduction up to 3 cycles. Pellets are completely pulverized by the first oxidation, and the high-temperature treatment causes particle and crystallite to grow and surface to be smooth, and thus particle size significantly increases and surface area decreases. The reduction following the high-temperature treatment decreases much the particle size by means of the formation of intercrystalline cracks. The particle size decreases a little during the second oxidation and reduction cycle and then remains nearly constant during the third and fourth cycles. Surface area of pounder increases progressively with the repetition of oxidation and reduction cycles, mainly due to the formation of Surface cracks. The degradation of surface area resulting from high-temperature treatment is restored by too subsequent resulting oxidation and reduction cycles.
Mechanical alloying under various gas atmospheres such as Ar, an Ar-$H_2$ mixture, and He gases were carried out, and its effects on the powder properties, microstructure and mechanical properties of ODS ferritic steels were investigated. Hot isostatic pressing and hot rolling processes were employed to consolidate the ODS steel plates. While the mechanical alloyed powder in He had a high oxygen concentration, a milling in Ar showed fine particle diameters with comparably low oxygen concentration. The microstructural observation revealed that low oxygen concentration contributed to the formation of fine grains and homogeneous oxide particle distribution by the Y-Ti-O complex oxides. A milling in Ar was sufficient to lower the oxygen concentration, and this led a high tensile strength and fracture elongation at a high temperature. It is concluded that the mechanical alloying atmosphere affects oxygen concentration as well as powder particle properties. This leads to a homogeneous grain and oxide particle distribution with excellent creep strength at high temperature.
TRISO-coated particle fuel is widely used in high temperature gas cooled reactors and other advanced reactors. The performance of coated fuel particle is one of the fundamental bases of reactor safety. The failure probability of coated fuel particle should be evaluated and determined through suitable fuel performance models and methods during normal and accident condition. In order to better facilitate the design of coated particle fuel, a new TRISO fuel performance code named FRAT (Fission product Release Analysis Tool) was developed. FRAT is designed to calculate internal gas pressure, mechanical stress and failure probability of a coated fuel particle. In this paper, FRAT was introduced and benchmarked against IAEA CRP-6 benchmark cases for coated particle failure analysis. FRAT's results agree well with benchmark values, showing the correctness and satisfactory applicability. This work helps to provide a foundation for the credible application of FRAT.

ZnO/Zn redox cycle is the one of the promising thermochemical cycles for hydrogen production via water splitting with high temperature heat source like a concentrated solar energy. This paper reports the particle size effect of Zinc on water splitting behavior. Water splitting reaction experiments were carried out at isothermal conditions of 350 and 400$^{\circ}C$ in TGA (Thermo Gravimetric Analyzer) using four commercial Zinc powders (nano, <10 ${\mu}m$, <150 ${\mu}m$ and $150{\sim}600\;{\mu}m$ particle sizes). Before the experiments, average particle size of Zinc powders was analyzed by PSA (Particle Size Analysis). After the experiments, XRD (X-Ray Diffraction) and SEM (Scanning Electron Microscope) analyses were conducted on the samples. The experimental results showed that particle size had a effect on the conversion of Zinc to ZnO. Zinc conversion was increased, as the particle size decreased. Especially, the nano size particles were aggregated and the particle's morphology changed on the surface during hydrolysis reaction.

To check adaptability of low ash coal(hyper coal) to chemical looping combustion, reaction characteristics of two coals (Roto and Hyper coal) with two oxygen carriers (NiO/bentonite, OCN703-1100) have been investigated in a thermogravimetric analyzer. Hyper coal represented low combustion rate and high ignition temperature, high volatile content and high devolatilization rate, and therefore, showed worse oxygen transfer during successive 10 cycle reduction-oxidation test than Roto coal. Finally we selected Roto coal as the candidate coal for chemical looping combustion. For Roto coal, OCN703-1100 particle showed better oxygen transfer than NiO/bentonite particle. During 10 cycle reduction oxidation test, change of the extent of oxidation (Wo) was negligible and we could conclude that both oxygen carriers have sufficient regeneration ability.
The particle size effect on the combustion characteristics of pulverized coal was investigated in the cylindrical-shape, horizontal furnace, fired in the range of 8.8∼10.6 kw. Three differently-sized fractions (5, 30, and 44 microns in average diameter) of high-volatile bituminous coal, were burned in the test furnace. Burnout behavior of pulverized coal flame were determined through the measurement of stable species concentrations (CO$_2$and H$_2$O). Concentrations of CO$_2$were compared with the theoretical values and the result showed good agreement. Thermal behavior of pulverized coal flame were determined as maximum flame temperatures occurred at fuel-rich conditions in every case. Flame lengths were also determined by decreasing with the particle size decrease. The flame length of the fine sized coal sample was comparable to that produced by distillate oil. The color of the coal flames ranged from orange to yellow, with the flame of the fine size fraction being brighter and yellower than the others.
The purpose of this study is to prepare WO3 nanopowders by high-energy milling in mixture gas (7 % H2+Ar) with various milling times (10, 30, and 60 min). The phase transformation, particle size and light absorption properties of WO3 nanopowders during reduction via high-energy milling are studied. It is found that the particle size of the WO3 decreases from about 30 ㎛ to 20 nm, and the grain size of WO3 decreases rapidly with increasing milling time. Furthermore, the surface of the particles due to the pulverization process is observed to change to an amorphous structure. UV/Vis spectrophotometry shows that WO3 powder with increasing milling times (10, 30, 60 min) effectively extends the light absorption properties to the visible region. WO3 powder changes from yellow to gray and can be seen as a phenomenon in which the progress of the color changes to blue. The characterization of WO3 is performed by high resolution X-ray diffractometry, Field emission scanning electron microscopy, Transmission electron microscopy, UV/Vis spectrophotometry and Particle size analysis.

Effect of interfacial electrical conditions on adhesion of ${\alpha}-Fe_2O_3$ particles to PET fabric and the removal of ${\alpha}-Fe_2O_3$ particles from PET fabric, were investigated as functions of pH, electrolyte and ionic strength. The ${\zeta}$ potential of PET fiber and ${\alpha}-Fe_2O_3$ particles in the electrolyte solution were measured by streaming potential and microelectrophoresis methods respectively. The potential energy of interaction between ${\alpha}-Fe_2O_3$ particles and PET fabric were calculated by using the heterocoagulation theory for a sphere-plate model. The negative ${\zeta}$ potential of ${\alpha}-Fe_2O_3$ particle and PET fiber increased with pH, and then decreased certain pH and isoelectric points of ${\alpha}-Fe_2O_3$ particles and PET fiber were pH 6.5 and pH 3.5, respectively. The negative ${\zeta}$ potential of ${\alpha}-Fe_2O_3$ particle and PET fiber affected by electrolytes, were relatively high with polyanion electrolytes in solutions and were low with neutral salts. However, at surfactant solution, ${\zeta}$ potential was levelled off. The influence of the ionic strength on the ${\zeta}$ potential of ${\alpha}-Fe_2O_3$ particle was small but the negative ${\zeta}$ potential of PET fiber increased with the ionic strength. In the presence of anionic surfactant, the ${\zeta}$ potential of ${\alpha}-Fe_2O_3$ particle and PET fiber increased regardless of solution conditions. The interaction energy between ${\alpha}-Fe_2O_3$ particle and PET fabric increased with pH. The interaction energy was relatively high with polyanion electrolytes in solution, and the influence of ionic strength on the interaction energy was small, and the effective thickness of electrical double layer increased with decreasing the ionic strength.
