  • This paper presents a high dimming ratio Power-LED driver IC with high power which is capable of controlling LEDs. In order to accomplish a high dimming ratio LED driver, the preloading inductor current methodology is proposed for the power stage of the proposed method to achieve the fast transient response time during the Power-LED load switching. The information containing the current flowing on the LEDs can be utilized to predict the amount of the current on the inductor. The minimum LED current rising time of existing high dimming ratio Power-LED driver is limited by $3{\mu}s$, however that of the proposed high dimming ratio Power-LED driver is reduced about 1/10. The LED driver is implemented with 0.35um 60V BCDMOS 2-poly 4-metal process. The measurement results show that the proposed LED driver system features the minimum rising time as small as 240ns at the dimming frequency of 1KHz with a 12V of input voltage, nine white LEDs and 353mA of LED current. The LED rising time and power conversion efficiency of the chip are measured to be 240ns and 93.72%, respectively.

  • Light-emitting diodes (LEDs) are modulated using a square wave pulse sequence for flicker prevention and dimming control in visible light communication (VLC). In a VLC transmitter, the high and low bits of the non-return-to-zero (NRZ) data are converted to two square waves of different frequencies, which continue for a finite time defined by the fill ratio in an NRZ bit time. As the average optical power was kept constant and independent of data transmission, the LED was flicker-free. Dimming control is carried out by changing the fill ratio of the square wave in the NRZ bit time. In the experiments, the illumination of the LED light was controlled in the range of approximately 19.2% to 96.2% of the continuous square wave modulated LED light. In the VLC receiver, a high-pass filter combined with a latch circuit was used to recover the transmitted signal while preventing noise interference from adjacent lighting lamps.

  • For several years, many researchers have proposed LED backlight dimming technology for low power consumption and high contrast ratio. One of the major issues plaguing RGB LED with 2D dimming technology is color shift. This undesirable variation makes it difficult to use RGB LED as light sources in the backlight system. This paper describes the useful method of the optical feedback system for 2D dimming RGB LED backlight. The test results show that our proposed method is very suitable for the 2D dimming technology.

  • The electrodeless lamps using the induction discharge have a long lifetime and a high tolerance for the variable output conditions of a ballast since they don't need the electrodes. This paper proposed two novel dimming algorithms for the Electrodeless lamps and described the resonant inverter adopted the proposed methods. The proposed dimming algorithms are based on the conventional burst dimming method which is normally adopted for LCD back-lights. One of the proposed algorithms is a improved burst dimming method, which controls the illumination by duty ratio of $5\%$ and its control circuit is formed by simple digital logics. The other algorithm is a burst PWM average duty ratio control method, which controls the illumination by duty ratio of $1\%$ and its control circuit is formed by more complex digital logics than the first method. To verify the validity of the proposed dimming methods, a prototype experimental setup for 100W Electrodeless lamps is carried out and its results are presented in this paper.

  • Dynamic range of LCD panel can be dramatically improved by adaptive dimming technique. Adaptive control of LED backlight by input signal can reduce the light leakage of LCD panel and achieve high contrast ratio. An algorithm is proposed to distinguish the input signal and get proper luminance level. For lower cost of LCD panel, white light LED is used to accomplish 2D dimming and get better image performance of LCD.

  • In this paper, an X-Y channel dimming light emitting diode (LED) backlight with temperature compensation for in LCD TVs is proposed. It shows local dimming effects such as reduced power consumption and high dynamic contrast ratio even with much less number of LED drivers than that of the conventional two-dimensional local dimming method. Moreover, the image distortion caused by temperature variation of LED block can be effectively compensated. The validity of the proposed dimming method is verified by simulation and experimental results based on a RGB-LED backlight of a 32-inch LCD TV.

  • In this paper, light-emitting-diode (LED) backlight driving circuits and dimming method for medium-sized and large liquid crystal displays (LCDs) are proposed. The double loop control method, the intelligent-phase-shifted PWM dimming method, the fast-switching current regulator, and the current matching techniques are proposed to improve not only the current regulation characteristics and the power efficiency but also the current matching characteristics and the transient response of the LED current. The brightness of the backlight using the proposed local dimming method was determined from the histogram of the local block to reduce the power consumption of the backlight without image distortion. The measured maximum power efficiency of the LED backlight driving circuit for medium-sized LCDs was 90%, and the simulation results showed an 88% maximum power efficiency of the LED backlight driving circuit for large LCDs. The maximum backlight power-saving ratio of the proposed dimming method was 41.7% in the simulation with a high-contrast image. The experiment and simulation results showed that the performance of LEDs as LCD backlight units (BLUs) improved with the proposed circuits and method.

  • In this paper, the new smart dimming algorithm which is mixed with PWM and PAM control method is proposed for reducing the power consumption of LED TV Backlight. The proposed technique is using the curve characteristics of LED forward voltage and current which is proportionally changing LED forward voltage as changing LED forward current. Therefore, each PWM and PAM control method has different LED forward voltage and current in the same brightness condition. The PWM control method adjusts the brightness of LED TV Backlight by only varying the duty ratio of PWM and constantly sustaining the amplitude of LED forward current and voltage. So, the level of LED forward current and voltage in the PWM control method is relatively high and constant regardless of duty ratio of PWM. On the other hand, the PAM control method adjusts the brightness of LED TV Backlight by directly varying the level of LED forward current. So, the level of LED forward current and voltage in the PAM control method is lowered according to the brightness level. For the above-mentioned reason, the PAM control method has the advantage of reducing the total power consumption of LED TV Backlight at the brightness condition of below 100%, compared with PWM control method. By implementing this characteristic to LED driver circuit with control algorithm in MCU, the power consumption of LED TV Backlight can expect to be reduced. The effectiveness of the proposed method, new smart dimming algorithm, CPWAM(=Conditional Pulse Width Amplitude Modulation), has been verified by experimental results.

  • An LED lighting which adjusted brightness according to the surround ambient implemented using PWM technology and power devices. To measure the brightness of surround ambient a CdS sensor was used. A control board for the generation of the PWM signal was made using a MCU and duty ratio was controlled according to light intensity of surround ambient of the system. To drive the LED lamps which require high-voltage and high-current power devices were used for switching the DC power supply. Measurement results show that the IGBT is excellent as only lineality but the PowerBJT is more good to consider to efficiency and cost.
