  • Gusts generated by downburst have caused a great variety of structural damages in many regions around the world. It is of great significance to accurately evaluate the downburst-induced wind load on high-rise building for the wind resistance design. The main objective of this paper is to propose a computational modeling approach which can satisfactorily predict the mean and fluctuating wind pressure coefficients induced by downburst on high-rise building surfaces. In this study, using an impinging jet to simulate downburst-like wind, and simultaneous pressure measurements are obtained on a high-rise building model at different radial locations. The model test data are used as the database for developing back propagation neural network (BPNN) models. Comparisons between the BPNN prediction results and those from impinging jet test demonstrate that the BPNN-based method can satisfactorily and efficiently predict the downburst-induced wind pressure coefficients on single and overall surfaces of high-rise building at various radial locations.

  • When seismic isolation system is applied to high aspect-ratio (height/wide-ratio) steel structures, there are several problems to be taken into consideration. One is lifting up tensile force on the isolation bearing by overturning moment caused by earthquake. Another is securing building stiffness to produce seismic isolation effects. Under these conditions, this paper reports the structural design of high-rise research building in the campus of Tokyo Institute of Technology. With the stepping-up system for the corner bearings, the narrow sides of single span framework are designed to concentrate the dead load as counter-weight for the tensile reaction under earthquake. Also we adopted concrete in-filled steel column and Mega-Bracing system covering four layers on north & south framework to secure the horizontal stiffness of the building.

  • Since the response reduction effect on over 200-meter-tall resulting from the seismic isolation system is smaller in general than low-rise and mid-rise buildings, mid-story isolated buildings are considered to reduce the response in the upper part above the isolation story, however, in many cases, the acceleration response just below the isolation story is likely to be the largest. This paper presents the structural design schemes, the design of the main structural frames, and the constructions of a 230-meter-tall super high-rise building with mid-story isolation mechanism integrated in Roppongi, Tokyo. Moreover, this paper shows how the architectural and structural design for integrating a mid-story isolation system in a super high-rise building has been conducted and what solutions have been derived in this project. The realization of this building indicates new possibilities for mid-story isolation design for super high-rise buildings.

  • According to the recent trends in the construction business have been actively booming both overseas plant orders and high-rise buildings orders. In addition high-rise building projects have being promoted or is actually under construction in Korea. Frame structure review which is the most consuming period on high-rise building is essential on that project. In this study looks for the currently form system and compares to those large system used in high-rise buildings.

  • High-rise as a building typology is gaining popularity in Asian mega-cities, due to its advantages in increasing volumetric density with limited land resources. Numerous factors contribute to the formation of high-rise urban form, from economical and institutional, environmental to socio-political. Environmental concerns over the impact of rapid urbanization in developing economies demand new thought on the link between urban environment and urban form. Outdoor and indoor climate, pedestrian comfort, and building energy consumption are all related to and impacted by urban form and building morphology. There are many studies and practices on designing individual "green" high-rise buildings, but far fewer studies on designing high-rise building clusters from the perspective of environmental performance optimization.. This paper focuses on the environmental perspective, and its correlation with the evolution of the high-rise urban form. Previous studies on urban morphology in terms of environmental and energy performance are reviewed. Studies on "parameterizing" urban morphology to estimate its environmental performance are reviewed, and the possible urban design implications of the study are demonstrated in by the author, by way of a microclimate map of the iconic Shanghai Xiao Lujiazui CBD. The study formulates the best-practice design guidelines for creating walkable and comfortable outdoor space in a high-rise urban setting, including proper sizing of street blocks and building footprint, provision of shading, and facilitating urban ventilation.

  • Thanks to the characteristic of high-rise buildings, the increase of wind speed according to the height of a building makes it possible to use high wind power resources, many countries led by some advanced nations are recently making steady and persistent effort in introducing small wind turbine systems as a step to lower electric power load in high-rise buildings. The aim of this research is to propose an optimum application process of a small wind turbine system in high-rise buildings. To achieve this goal, the case studies on the applications of high-rise and tall buildings were conducted and the best application among them was selected. On the basis of the case studies, an application process was proposed.

  • The High-rise building has a problem the ventilation performance of natural ventilator by stack effect that it occurs by pressure difference. For that reason the study about natural smoke ventilator of High-rise building consistently needs. Therefore on this study does analysis of difference with abroad through investigate of Natrual smoke ventilator's law, it conducts of natural smoke ventilator's research on the actual condition. As a result on this study, in the case of abroad that it states more specific standards than domestic. Also the result of a field study, it shows that the natural smoke ventilator is installed same size and the number regardless of building's pressure difference.

  • Recently Korea has imported and executed Performance Based Design for the method to settle the dangerousness on outbreak of fire of high-rise building. The overseas country's PBD is autonomic but It is unable to carry out the essential role of PBD as the performance based design that based the code based design in the domestic. Also It occurs the problems that different the classification standard of building as dualisation between the building code and the fire services act. In this study, We have investigated overseas's cases for the PBD of high-rise building and have drawn the improvement direction & the problem of domestic's PBD by comparing and the analysing the domestic regulation.

  • Currently a large number of high rise building projects are under plan and a mega foundation system to support this high load with safety is requiring. The foundation of a highrise building is displaced by the building load, which influence the behavior of a super structure in reverse. In this aspect, the structural interaction analysis between a foundation and a super structure is necessary. In this study, the relationship of a superstructure of building and a foundation has been reviewed, considering the tendency of design from a capacity driven design to a performance design. Two different case studies have been introduced to help understand this relationship in more specific, the first case is the high rise building founded on a mat system on rock and the second is that on large diameter bored piles on soft ground condition.
