A high-fidelity computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis was performed using the Large Eddy Simulation (LES) model for the lower plenum of the High-Temperature Test Facility (HTTF), a ¼ scale test facility of the modular high temperature gas-cooled reactor (MHTGR) managed by Oregon State University. In most next-generation nuclear reactors, thermal stress due to thermal striping is one of the risks to be curiously considered. This is also true for HTGRs, especially since the exhaust helium gas temperature is high. In order to evaluate these risks and performance, organizations in the United States led by the OECD NEA are conducting a thermal hydraulic code benchmark for HTGR, and the test facility used for this benchmark is HTTF. HTTF can perform experiments in both normal and accident situations and provide high-quality experimental data. However, it is difficult to provide sufficient data for benchmarking through experiments, and there is a problem with the reliability of CFD analysis results based on Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes to analyze thermal hydraulic behavior without verification. To solve this problem, high-fidelity 3-D CFD analysis was performed using the LES model for HTTF. It was also verified that the LES model can properly simulate this jet mixing phenomenon via a unit cell test that provides experimental information. As a result of CFD analysis, the lower the dependency of the sub-grid scale model, the closer to the actual analysis result. In the case of unit cell test CFD analysis and HTTF CFD analysis, the volume-averaged sub-grid scale model dependency was calculated to be 13.0% and 9.16%, respectively. As a result of HTTF analysis, quantitative data of the fluid inside the HTTF lower plenum was provided in this paper. As a result of qualitative analysis, the temperature was highest at the center of the lower plenum, while the temperature fluctuation was highest near the edge of the lower plenum wall. The power spectral density of temperature was analyzed via fast Fourier transform (FFT) for specific points on the center and side of the lower plenum. FFT results did not reveal specific frequency-dominant temperature fluctuations in the center part. It was confirmed that the temperature power spectral density (PSD) at the top increased from the center to the wake. The vortex was visualized using the well-known scalar Q-criterion, and as a result, the closer to the outlet duct, the greater the influence of the mainstream, so that the inflow jet vortex was dissipated and mixed at the top of the lower plenum. Additionally, FFT analysis was performed on the support structure near the corner of the lower plenum with large temperature fluctuations, and as a result, it was confirmed that the temperature fluctuation of the flow did not have a significant effect near the corner wall. In addition, the vortices generated from the lower plenum to the outlet duct were identified in this paper. It is considered that the quantitative and qualitative results presented in this paper will serve as reference data for the benchmark.
We have extended the source projection analytic nodal discrete ordinates method (SPANDOM) for more flexible applicability in analysis of hexagonal assembly cores. The method (SPANDOM-FH) does not invoke transverse integration but instead solves the discrete ordinates equation analytically after the source term is projected and represented in hybrid form of high-order polynomials and exponential functions. SPANDOM-FH which treats a hexagonal node as one node is applied to two fast reactor benchmark problems and compared with TWOHEX. The results of comparison indicate that the present method SPANDOM-FH predicts accurately $k_eff$ and flux distributions in hexagonal assembly cores. In addition, SPANDOM-FH gives the continuous two dimensional intranodal scalar flux distributions in a hexagonal node. The reentering models between TWOHEX and SPANDOM were also compared and it was confirmed that SPANDOM's model is more realistic. Through the results of benchmark problems, we conclude that SPANDOM-FH has the sufficient accuracy for the nuclear design of fast breeder reactor (FBR) cores with hexagonal assemblies.
Natural convection flows in a cubical, air-filled cavity that has one pair of opposing faces isothermal at different temperatures, Th and Tc, the remaining faces having a linear variation from Tc to Th are numerically simulated by a new solution code(PowerCFD) using unstructured cell-centered method. Solutions are obtained for configurations with a Rayleigh number as high as 105 and three inclination angles ${\theta}$ of the isothermal faces from horizontal: namely ${\theta}=0$, 45 and $90^{\circ}$. Interesting features are presented in detail and comparisons are made with benchmark solutions and experimental results found in the literature. It is found that the code is capable of producing accurately the nature of the laminar convection in a cubical, air-filled cavity with differentially heated walls.
The architecture of a MIMD-type parallel computer system is specified: a simulator is developed to support design and evaluation of systems based on the architecture: and conducted with the simulator to evaluate system performance. The horizontal/vertical-bus(H/V-bus) system architecture provides an NxN array of processing elements which communicate with each other through a network of N horizontal buses and N vertical buses. The simulator, written in SLAM II and FORTRAN, is designed to provide high-resolution in simulating the IPC mechanism. Parameters provide the user with independent control of system size, PE speed and IPC mechanism speed. Results generated by the simulator include execution times, PE utilizations, queue lengths, and other data. The simulator is used to study system performance when a partial differential equation is solved by parallel Gauss-Seidel method. For comparisons, the benchmark is also executed on a single-bus system simulator that is derived from the H/V-bus system simulator. The benchmark is also solved on a single PE to obtain data for computing speedups. An extensive analysis of results is presented.
Recently high-speed memory array based on RAM, which is a type of solid-state drive (SSD), has been introduced to handle the input/output (I/O) bottleneck. But there are only a few performance studies on RAM based SSD storage with regard to diverse workloads. In this paper, we focus on the file system for RAM based memory array based NGS (Next Generation Storage) system which is running on Linux operating system. Then we perform benchmark tests on practical file systems including Ext3, ReiserFS, XFS. The result shows XFS significantly outperforms other file systems in tests that represent the storage and data requests typically made by enterprise applications in many aspects. The experiment is used to design the dedicated file system for NGS system. The results presented here can help enterprises improve their performance significantly.
Finite elements based on the partition of unity (PU) approximation have powerful capabilities for p-adaptivity and solutions with high smoothness without remeshing of the domain. Recently, the PU approximation was successfully applied to the three-node shell finite element, properly eliminating transverse shear locking and showing excellent convergence properties and solution accuracy. However, the enrichment with the PU approximation results in a significant increase in the number of degrees of freedom; therefore, it requires greater computational cost, thus making it less suitable for practical engineering. To circumvent this disadvantage, we propose a new strategy to decrease the total number of degrees of freedom in the existing PU-based shell element, without loss of optimal convergence and accuracy. To alleviate the locking phenomenon, we use the method of mixed interpolation of tensorial components and perform convergence studies to show the accuracy and capability of the proposed shell element. The excellent performances of the new shell elements are illustrated in three benchmark problems.
KAERI (Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute) has developed the GAMMA+ code for a thermo-fluid and safety analysis of a VHTR (Very High Temperature Gas-Cooled Reactor). A key safety issue of the VHTR design is to demonstrate its inherent safety features for an automatic reactor power trip and power stabilization during an anticipated transient without scram (ATWS) accident such as a loss of forced cooling by a trip of the helium circulator (LOFC) or a reactivity insertion by a control rod withdrawal (CRW). This paper intends to show the ATWS assessment capability of the GAMMA+ code which can simulate the reactor power response by solving the point-kinetic equations with six-group delayed neutrons, by considering the reactivity changes due to the effects of a core temperature variation, xenon transients, and reactivity insertions. The present benchmark calculations are performed by using the safety demonstration experiments of the 10 MW high temperature gas cooled-test module (HTR-10) in China. The calculation results of the power response transients and the solid core temperature behavior are compared with the experimental data of a LOFC ATWS test and two CRW ATWS tests by using a 1mk-control rod and a 5mk-control rod, respectively. The GAMMA+ code predicts the power response transients very well for the LOFC and CRW ATWS tests in HTR-10.
The recent deployment of RIA (Rich Internet Application) is often involved with the complex JavaScript code, which leads to the announcement of high performance JavaScript engines for its efficient execution. And the Sunspider benchmark is being widely used for the performance evaluation of these JavaScript engines. In this paper, we compare the execution methods of three high-performance JavaScript engines, Mozilla TraceMonkey, Google V8, and Apple SquirrelFish Extreme, and measure their performances using the SunSpider benchmark. We also evaluate the pros and cons of each engine, based on its execution method and the code characteristics of the SunSpider benchmarks.
The indoor environments in high-rise buildings are generally well enclosed by defined boundary conditions. Here, a numerical simulation method based on the Lattice Boltzmann method (LBM), which aims to model and simulate the turbulent flow accurately in an enclosed environment, and its comparison with traditional computational fluid dynamics (CFD) results, are presented in this paper. CFD has become a powerful tool for predicting and evaluating enclosed airflows with the rapid advance in computer capacity and speed, and various types of CFD turbulence modeling and its application and validation have been reported. The LBM is a relatively new method; it involves solving of the discrete Boltzmann equation to simulate the fluid flow with a collision model instead of solving Navier-Stokes equations. In this study, the LBM-based scheme of flow pattern and particle dispersion analyses are validated using the benchmark test case of two- and three-dimensional and isothermal conditions (IEA/Annex 20 case); the prediction accuracy and advantages are also discussed by comparison with the results of CFD.
Analytical solutions to problems are crucial because they provide high-quality comparison data for assessing the accuracy of numerical solutions. Benchmark analytical solutions for the vibrations of cracked functionally graded material (FGM) plates are not available in the literature because of the high level of complexity of such solutions. On the basis of first-order shear deformation plate theory (FSDT), this study proposes analytical series solutions for the vibrations of FGM rectangular plates with side or internal cracks parallel to an edge of the plates by using Fourier cosine series and the domain decomposition technique. The distributions of FGM properties along the thickness direction are assumed to follow a simple power law. The proposed analytical series solutions are validated by performing comprehensive convergence studies on the vibration frequencies of cracked square plates with various crack lengths and under various boundary condition combinations and by performing comparisons with published results based on various plate theories and the theory of three-dimensional elasticity. The results reveal that the proposed solutions are in excellent agreement with literature results obtained using the Ritz method on the basis of FSDT. The paper also presents tabulations of the first six nondimensional frequencies of cracked rectangular Al/Al2O3 FGM plates with various aspect ratios, thickness-to-width ratios, crack lengths, and FGM power law indices under six boundary condition combinations, the tabulated frequencies can serve as benchmark data for assessing the accuracy of numerical approaches based on FSDT.
