  • As well as providing various APIs for the development of inference engines and storage models, Jena is widely used in the development of systems or tools related with Web ontology management. However, Jena still has several problems with regard to the development of real applications, one of the most important being that its query processing performance is unacceptable. This paper proposes a storage model to improve the query processing performance of the original Jena storage. The proposed storage model semantically classifies OWL elements, and stores an ontology in separately classified tables according to the classification. In particular, the hierarchical knowledge is managed, which can make the processing performance of inferable queries enhanced and stores information. It enhances the query processing performance by using hierarchical knowledge. For this paper an experimental evaluation was conducted, the results of which showed that the proposed storage model provides a improved performance compared with Jena.

  • Although digit character recognition has got a significant improvement in recent years, it is still challenging to achieve satisfied result if the data contains an amount of distracting factors. This paper proposes a novel digit character recognition approach using a multi-layer hierarchical model, Hybrid Restricted Boltzmann Machines (HRBMs), which allows the learning architecture to be robust to background distracting factors. The insight behind the proposed model is that useful high-level features appear more frequently than distracting factors during learning, thus the high-level features can be decompose into hybrid hierarchical structures by using only small label information. In order to extract robust and compact features, a stochastic 0-1 layer is employed, which enables the model's hidden nodes to independently capture the useful character features during training. Experiments on the variations of Mixed National Institute of Standards and Technology (MNIST) dataset show that improvements of the multi-layer hierarchical model can be achieved by the proposed method. Finally, the paper shows the proposed technique which is used in a real-world application, where it is able to identify digit characters under various complex background images.

  • Since the result data from DNA microarray experiments contain a lot of gene expression information, adequate analysis methods are required. Hierarchical clustering is widely used for analysis of gene expression profiles. In this paper, we study leaf-ordering, which is a post-processing for the dendrograms output by hierarchical clusterings to improve the efficiency of DNA microarray data analysis. At first, we analyze existing leaf-ordering algorithms and then present new approaches for leaf-ordering. And we introduce a software HCLO(Hierarchical Clustering & Leaf-Ordering Tool) that is our implementation of hierarchical clustering, some of existing leaf-ordering algorithms and those presented in this paper.

  • Various surface texturing techniques have been studied because of the effective applicability of micro or nano scale surface patterns. Particularly, the most promising types of patterns include the hierarchical patterns, which consists of micro/nano structures. Different processes such as MEMS, laser machining, micro cutting and micro grinding have been applied in the production of hierarchical patterns on various material surfaces. This study demonstrates the process of hot imprinting to induce the hierarchical patterns on the Al alloy surfaces. Wire electrical discharge machining (WEDM) process was used to imprint molds with micro scale sinusoidal pattern. In addition, the sinusoidal pattern with rough surface morphology was obtained as a result of the discharge craters. Consequently, the hierarchical patterns consisting of the sinusoidal pattern and the discharge craters were prepared on the imprinting mold surface. Hot imprinting process for the Al plates was conducted on the prepared mold, and the replication performance was analyzed. As a result, it was confirmed that the hierarchical patterns of the mold were effectively duplicated on the surface of Al plate.

  • This paper presents a new method for the motion detection of vehicles using hierarchical motion estimation and parallel processing. It captures the road image by using a CMOS sensor. It divides the captured image into small blocks and detects the motion of each block by using a block-matching method which is based on a hierarchical motion estimation and parallel processing for the real-time processing. The parallelism is achieved by using the pipeline and the data flow technique. The proposed method has been implemented with an embedded system. Experimental results show that the proposed method detects the motion of vehicles in real-time.

  • In this paper, we propose an algorithm which segments hierarchically blocks of image using discrete cosine transform(DCT) and execute finite-state vector quantization (FSVQ) for each block. Using DCT coefficient feature, image is segmented hierarchically to large smooth block and small edge block, then the block hierarchy informations are transmitted. The codebooks are respectively constructed for each hierarchical blocks, the encoder transmits codeword index using FSVQ for reducing encoded bit with hierarchical segmentation. Compared with side match VQ(SMVQ) and hierarchical FSVQ(HFSVQ) algorithm, about Zelda and Boat image, the new algorithm shows better picture quality with 1.97dB and 2.85 dB difference as to SMVQ, 1.78dB and 1.85dB diffences as to HFSVQ respectively.

  • A smart dust monitoring system is useful for obtaining information on rough terrain that is difficult for humans to access. One of ways to deploy sensors to gather information in smart dust environment is to use an aircraft in the Amazon rainforest to scatter an enormous amount of small and cheap sensors (or smart dust devices), or to use an unmanned spacecraft to throw the sensors on the moon's surface. However, scattering an enormous amount of smart dust devices creates the difficulty of managing such devices as they can be scattered into inaccessible areas, and also causes problems such as bottlenecks, device failure, and high/low density of devices. Of the various problems that may occur in the smart dust environment, this paper is focused on solving the bottleneck problem. To address this, we propose and construct a three-layered hierarchical smart dust monitoring system that includes relay dust devices (RDDs). An RDD is a smart dust device with relatively higher computing/communicating power than a normal smart dust device. RDDs play a crucial role in reducing traffic load for the system. To validate the proposed system, we use climate data obtained from authorized portals to compare the system with other systems (i.e., non-hierarchical system and simple hierarchical system). Through this comparison, we determined that the transmission processing time is reduced by 49%-50% compared to other systems, and the maximum number of connectable devices can be increased by 16-32 times without compromising the system's operations.
