Hierarchical structure of star-forming regions is widespread and may be characteristic of all star formation. We studied the hierarchical structure of star-forming regions in the Local Group galaxies (M31, M33, Phoenix, Pegasus, Sextans A, Sextans B, WLM). The star-forming regions were selected from Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX) far-UV imaging in various detection thresholds for investigating hierarchical structure. We examined the spatial distribution of the hot massive stars within star-forming regions from Hubble Space Telescope (HST) multi-band photometry. Small compact groups arranged within large complexes. The cumulative mass distribution follows a power law. The results allow us to understand the hierarchical structure of star formation and recent evolution of the Local Group galaxies.
In this paper, we proposed a nonlinear hierarchical mtion estimation method. Generally, the conventional hierarchical motion estimation methods have been proposed for fast convergence and detection of large motions. But they have a common drawback that large error in motion estimation is propapated across motion discontinuities. This artifiact is due to the constriaint of motion continuity and the linear interpolation of motion vectors between hierarchical levels. In this paper, we propose an effective hierarchical motion estimation mechod that is robust to motion discontinuities. The proposed algorithm is based on the decomposition of the functional domain for optimizing the intra-level motion estimation functional. Also, we propose an inter-level nonlinear motion estimation equation rather than using the conventional linearprojection scheme of motion field. computer simulations with several test sequences show tht the proposed algorithm performs better than several conventional methods.
This paper presents design and development of a simulator evaluates the performance of a hierarchical cellular system. The proposed hierarchical cellular simulator, consisting of macro, micro, and pico cells, applies the wrap-around technique to reduce simulation time. The simulator is implemented as object oriented class models by using the C++ language in a PC environment. The resulting application can evaluate the interference, SIR(Signal to Interference Ratio), and capacity of a hierarchical cellular system in various configurations. Moreover, it can be used in other applications such as power control, call admission control, hand over scheme.
In this paper, we propose an algorithm to solve the problem of placement of rectangular blocks whose sizes and shpaes are pre-determined. The proposed method solves the placement of many retangular blocks of different sizes and shapes in a hierarchical manner, so as to minimize the chip area. The placement problem is divided into several sub-problems: hierarchical partioning, hierarchical area/shape estimation, hierarchical pattern pacement, overlap removal, and module rotation. After the circuit is recursively partitioned to build a hierarchy tree, the necessary wiring area and module shpaes are estimated using the resutls of the partitioning and the pin information before the placement is performed. The placement templaes are defined to represent the relative positions of the modules. The area and the connectivity are optimized separately at each level of hierachy using the placement templates, so the minimization of chip area and wire length can be achieved in a short execution time. Experiments are made on the MCNC building block benchmark circuits and the results are compared with those of other published methods. The proposed technique is shown to produce good figures in tems of execution time and chip area.
This study developed a Poisson generalized linear mixed model and a procedure to estimate genetic parameters for count traits. The method derived from a frequentist perspective was based on hierarchical likelihood, and the maximum adjusted profile hierarchical likelihood was employed to estimate dispersion parameters of genetic random effects. Current approach is a generalization of Henderson's method to non-normal data, and was applied to simulated data. Underestimation was observed in the genetic variance component estimates for the data simulated with large heritability by using the Poisson generalized linear mixed model and the corresponding maximum adjusted profile hierarchical likelihood. However, the current method fitted the data generated with small heritability better than those generated with large heritability.
This paper presents a framework for the hierarchical PPC(Production Planning and Control) in make-to-order environment with job shop. The characteristics of the environment are described as : 1) project with non-repetitive and individual production, 2) short delivery date, 3) process layout with large scales manufacturing. 4) job shops. The PPC in a make-to-order typically are organized along hierarchical fashions. A model is proposed for the hierarchical job shop scheduling based on new concepts of production system, work and worker organization. Then, a new integrated hierarchical framework is also developed for the PPC based on concepts of the proposed job shops scheduling model. Finally, the proposed framework has been implemented in the Electric Motor Manufacturing and the results showed good performance.
This paper explored the effectiveness of a hierarchical Treatment of Aphasic Perseveration (TAP) program on an aphasic in two regards: decrease in the frequency of perseveration and improvement in naming ability. The subject was a 54-year-old female with Transcortical Sensory (TCS) aphasia following a left ischemic Cerebrovascular Accident (CVA). It was concluded that the hierarchical TAP program was more effective and efficient in terms of decreasing perseveration and increasing correct naming performance. Within the data of the hierarchical TAP program, however, a substantial decrease in the frequency of occurrence of perseverative behaviors did not necessarily result in proportionate improvement of naming ability. The probable causes and reasons were discussed.
Due to the recent proliferation of the internet, it is broadly granted that the necessity of the automatic document categorization has been on the rise. Since it is a heavy time-consuming work and takes too much manpower to process and classify manually, we need a system that categorizes them automatically as their contents. In this paper, we propose the automatic E-mail response system that is based on 2 hierarchical document clustering methods. One is to get the final result from the classifier trained seperatly within each class, after clustering the whole documents into 3 groups so that the first classifier categorize the input documents as the corresponding group. The other method is that the system classifies the most distinct classes first as their similarity, successively. Neural networks have been adopted as classifiers, we have used dendrograms to show the hierarchical aspect of similarities between classes. The comparison among the performances of hierarchical and non-hierarchical classifiers tells us clustering methods have provided the classification efficiency.
In this paper, we propose a hierarchical RAM simulation model framework which are used to analyze the RAM specifications on the concept refinement phase. The hierarchical RAM simulation model framework consists of RAM simulation models, class library and each model's input and output data lists. The hierarchical RAM simulation models are co-operated with 3 kinds of model - type I, II, III. Type I, II models are used to analyze the target operational availability and Type III is used to establish the initial RAM specifications. Each model's input and output data lists are defined by considering each model's purpose of RAM analysis. The class library is arranged with each model's classes for implementing the hierarchical simulation models. The proposed framework may be applied for executing the RAM activities effectively.
In the analysis of thin elastic structures such as plate and shell-like structures, classical lower-order theories like Kirchhoff and Reissner-Mindin theories are insufficient to describe the behavior of such structures in the region where the state of stresses is complex. On the other hand, the fully three dimensional theory of linear elasticity can provide desired analysis accuracy, but requires expensive computational implementation compared to the classical theories. This paper is concerned with the development of hierarchical models for elastic structures which can be used for hierarchical modeling for the analysis of such structures. Derivation and limit model analysis (when the thickness of structures tends to zero) of hierarchical models are presented together with a introduction of modeling error estimation. Also, numerical results supporting theoretical results are given.
