A hiccup is caused by involuntary, intermittent, and spasmodic contractions of the diaphragm and intercostal muscles. It starts with a sudden inspiration and ends with an abrupt closure of the glottis. Even though a hiccup is thought to develop through the hiccup reflex arc, its exact pathophysiology is still unclear. The etiologies include gastrointestinal disorders, respiratory abnormalities, psychogenic factors, toxic-metabolic disorders, central nervous system dysfunctions and irritation of the vagus and phrenic nerves. Most benign hiccups can be controlled by traditional empirical therapy such as breath holding and swallowing water. However, though rare, a persistent hiccup longer than 48 hours can lead to significant adverse effects including malnutrition, dehydration, insomnia, electrolyte imbalance, and cardiac arrhythmia. An intractable hiccup can sometimes even cause death. We herein describe a patient with non-small cell lung cancer who was severely distressed by a persistent hiccup.
Hiccup is characterized by a myoclonus in the diaphragm, resulting in a sudden inspiration associated with an audible closure of the glottis. The reflex arc in hiccups comprises three pars: an afferent, a central and an efferent part. The afferent portion of the neural pathway of hiccup formation is composed of the vagus nerve, the phrenic nerve, and the sympathetic chain arising from T6 to T12. The hiccup center is localised in the brain stem and the efferent limb comprises phrenic pathways. All stimuli affecting the above mentioned reflex arc may produce hiccups. The pathogenesis of persistent hiccups is not known. Hiccup can present a symptom of a subphrenic abscess or gastric distention, and metabolic alterations may also cause hiccups. Numerous treatment modalities have been tried but with questionable success. We describe a patient whose persistant hiccups was treated successfully by a cervical epidural block.

Hiccup is one of common symptoms that remains poorly understood. The hiccups coordinating center is located in the brain-stem reticular formation. Hiccups may be derived from 400 medical origins. Stroke is an infrequent cause of intractable hiccups. Intractable hiccups in pontine infarction remain poorly understood. As for treatments of hiccups, physical stimulating methods, pharmacological therapies and surgery are occidental conventional methods. In Pharmacological therapies, antidepressants, gastric motility stimulants, antispastic drugs are commonly used. Oriental medicines and acupuncture are also used frequently to treat hiccups. We have treated a case of intractable hiccup induced by pontine infarction with herbal medication; Gwakhyangjeonggi-san gami, acupuncture and moxibustion, and successfully improved. This case showed oriental medicine therapy is effective in intractable hiccup induced by pontine infarction.

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to summarize current clinical study trends and results regarding acupuncture treatments for hiccups. Methods: Studies published from 2012 to 2022 were searched on PubMed and domestic databases (OASIS, scienceON, RISS, KISS, KCI) using the keywords "hiccup*", "singultus", "singultation", "hiccupping", "intractable hiccup*", "acupuncture", "auricular acupuncture", "scalp acupuncture", "acupuncture point", "acupoint", "needle", "dry needle", "딸꾹질", and "침." The studies were analyzed according to the year, language, study design, characteristics of patients, and acupuncture intervention. Results: In total, 12 studies were selected: 8 case series, 2 case-control studies, and 2 case reports. Manual acupuncture was administered with more than 15 minutes of retention time, most frequently using ST36 and CV12. The acupuncture treatment was effective for hiccup symptoms in all studies, as assessed by clinical symptoms, such as duration time, number of episodes, and recurrence. Conclusions: Acupuncture treatment can be an effective and safe method for treating hiccups and can be used in clinical practice.
Corticosteroid has been extensively used for the treatment of many medical diseases caused by immune and inflammatory response. And recently it becomes the first choice of treatment for bronchial asthma in a point of it's anti-inflammatory effects. However, this therapy has been associated with many well-known complications including truncal obesity, diabetes mellitus, excerbation of hypertension, delayed wound healing, easy bruisy, atropy of proximal muscles, psychotic symptoms, and/or osteoporosis. We report a case of patient with bronchial asthma who developed an uncommon side reaction, intractable hiccup persisting longer than 48 hours after treatment with oral corticosteroid.

Objective: The main symptoms of the Wallenberg's syndrome are ataxia of gait, clumsiness of ipsilateral limbs, nausea and vomiting, vertigo, visual disturbance such as difficulty in focusing blurred vision diplopia, numbness, dysphagia, hoarseness, hiccup, nystagmus, Homer's syndrome. The purpose of this paper is to report the patient with the Wallenberg's syndrome who was improved by oriental medical treatment. Methods: In terms of exuberance of Yang(vital function) of the liver and stagnation of the liver Ki(energy), we let the patient take Chunghunhwadam-Tang, Hwangryeonhaedok-Tang and Dangkwihwalhyeol-Tang, at the same time, treated with acupuncture, Sa-Am and Dong-Si acupuncture therapy twice a day. Results: We could know that symptoms of the Wallenberg's Syndrome were improved after observing left sensory paralysis was almost recovered, hiccup was completely healed and vertigo was reduced to 1/10. Conclusions: We confirmed that oriental drugs and acupuncture by differentiation of syndromes make the patient with the Wallenberg's Syndrome reduce and improve symptoms he has.
Persistent and intractable hiccups (with respective durations of more than 48 hours and 1 month) can result in depression, fatigue, impaired sleep, dehydration, weight loss, malnutrition, and aspiration syndromes. The conventional treatments for hiccups are either non-pharmacological, pharmacological or a nerve block treatment. Pulsed radiofrequency lesioning (PRFL) has been proposed for the modulation of the excited nervous system pathway of pain as a safe and nondestructive treatment method. As placement of the electrode in close proximity to the targeted nerve is very important for the success of PRFL, ultrasound appears to be well suited for this technique. A 74-year-old man suffering from intractable hiccups that had developed after a coronary artery bypass graft and had continued for 7 years was referred to our pain clinic. He had not been treated with conventional methods or medications. We performed PRFL of the phrenic nerve guided by ultrasound and the hiccups disappeared.
To play back CM (Continuous Media) in online mode, the multimedia system Is required to have a real-time disk scheduling scheme that can efficiently fulfill the strict temporal constraints of serviced CM streams to prevent hiccups. In general, such disk scheduling is performed based on the concept of periodic prefetching since a CM stream has a rather long Playback time. In this paper, we also propose a periodic prefetching scheme that runs by using real-time disk channels, called on-time delivery channels. Since the channels are generated from the bulk-SCAN algorithm and they can be allocated in a very flexible manner based on the EDF (earliest-deadline-first) algorithm, the proposed scheme provides a better Performance in terms of I/O throughput and the average response time, as well as hiccup-free playback of concurrent CM streams. To show that the proposed scheme outperforms other methods, we give some simulation results.
With fast advances in computing power and network technologies, online streaming services of continuous media (CM) have been popularly implemented on the Web. To implement such services, a variety of CM streams need to be processed efficiently, so that the Sweep scheme was proposed. This scheme has several advantages such as hiccup-free playbacks and seek-time optimization. In this scheme, however, the entire CM streams are scheduled with a single scheduling period, called a cycle. Since only one scheduling period is allowed in this scheme, a significant amount of disk time is usually wasted because of its inflexible disk schedules. To solve this, we propose a new dynamic Sweep scheme. For this, we devise an algorithm that is able to expand scheduling periods of serviced CM streams and propose a new admission control mechanism guaranteeing hiccup-free playbacks. To show performance gains, we execute various simulation experiments. From the experimental results, we can see that the proposed scheme outperforms the Sweep scheme in terms of disk utilization and scheduling flexibility.
Objectives : The Jap Byoung(雜病) of the Young Chu(靈樞), one of the classical book of oriental medicine contains symptoms and remedies for various diseases that can be seen on human body. But it is too difficult to understand the Jap Byoung(雜病), because it is written in old chinese and there are many printer's error and omissions or adds in this book. As a consequence of above reason, the writer of this article has researched to find out the exact meaning of that. Methods : So in this part we study a woodblock-printed book of successive generation and view of annotators, and add adding notes, adjustment, translation to exact comprehension of the original text. Results & conclusions : The principle ideas of the thesis can be summarized as follows: The Jap Byoung(雜病) is consist of five part. In chapter 1, we present symptoms occurred by the upstream current of Qi(氣逆) and their treatments by taking meridian flowing the body parts on which the symptoms occur. In chapter 2, we deal with symptoms such as ikgun(?乾), a pain of the knee(膝中痛), huby(喉痺), epistaxis(?血), lumbago(腰痛), anger(怒), a pain of the jaw(痛), a pain of the nape(項痛) and their remedies. In chapter 3, since abdominal inflation occurs when the Qi(氣) of the five viscera(五臟) is damaged or go upstream, I discussed that the treatment should be given by taking the meridian accordingly. In chapter 4, we deal with the remedy for heartache, and different meridians to be taken by symptom, and parts on which needle to be used, and detailed remedies. In chapter 5, we present other diseases, detailed body parts to be cured and remedies by referring symptoms for a pain of the jaw(痛), the upstream current of Qi(氣逆), hiccup, etc. Especially, we introduce a part of Doinbup(導引法) for wegurl(?厥) and remedies for hiccup such as inducing sneeze by stimulating nostrils, holding one's breath, etc.
