Minimizing the total number of setup changes of a machine increases the throughput and improves the stability of a production process, and as a result enhances the product qualify. In this context, we consider a new product-mix problem that minimizes the total number of setup changes while producing the required quantities of a product over a given planning horizon. For this problem, we develop a mixed integer programming model. Also, we develop an efficient heuristic algorithm to find a feasible solution of good quality within reasonable time bounds. Computational results show that the developed heuristic algorithm finds a feasible solution as good as the optimal solution in most test problems.
VRP(Vehicle Routing Problem) is studied in this paper, where two different kinds of missions are to be completed. The objective is to minimize the total vehicle operating distance. A mixed integer programming formulation and a heuristic algorithm for a practical use are suggested. A heuristic algorithm consists of three phases such as clustering, constructing routes, and adjustment. In the first phase, customers are clustered so that the supply nodes are grouped with demand nodes to be served by the same vehicle. Vehicle routes are generated within the cluster in the second phase. Clusters and routes are adjusted in the third phase using the UF (unfitness) rule designed to determine the customers and the routes to be moved properly. It is shown that the suggested heuristic algorithm yields good performances within a relatively short computational time through computational experiment.
Calibration of Engine models is a painstaking process but very important for successful application to automotive industry problems. A combined heuristic and machine learning approach has therefore been adopted to improve the efficiency of model calibration. We developed an intelligent calibration program called ICALIB. It has been used on a daily basis for engine model applications, and has reduced the time required for model calibrations from many hours to a few minutes on average. In this paper, we describe the heuristic control strategies employed in ICALIB such as a hill-climbing search based on a state distance estimation function, incremental problem solution refinement by using a dynamic tolerance window, and calibration target parameter ordering for guiding the search. In addition, we present the application of amachine learning program called GID3*for automatic acquisition of heuristic rules for ordering target parameters.
In this study, a heuristic algorithm is developed to solve a resource-constrained scheduling problem. The problem involves multiple projects and multiple resource categories, and allows flexible resource allocation to each activity. The objective is to minimize the maximum completion time. The algorithm takes advantage of the basic structure of a heuristic algorithm, called the exchange heuristic, but employs different strategies on some critical steps of the original algorithm which have significant effects on the algorithm performance. The original algorithm and the modified algorithm were compared through an experimental investigation. The modified algorithm produces significantly shorter schedules than the original algorithm, though it requires up to three times more computation time.
In this paper, we present a modeling approach to production planning for an actual production line and a heuristic method. We also illustrate the successful implementation of the proposed method on the production line. A heuristic algorithm called the push-back algorithm was designed for a single machine earliness/tardiness production planning with distinct due date. It was developed by combining a minimum slack time rule and shortest processing time rule with a push-back procedure. The results of a numerical experiment on the heuristic's performance are presented in comparison with the results of IBM ILOG CPLEX. The proposed algorithm was applied to an actual case of production planning at Woongjin Chemical, a leading manufacturer of filter products in South Korea. The seven-month execution of our algorithm led to a 24.5% decrease in the company's inventory level, thus demonstrating its practicality and effectiveness.
This paper propose a heuristic algorithm based on the Branch-Exchange (BE) method to solve Optimal feeder Routing(OFR) problem for the distribution system planning. The cost function of the OFR problem is consisted of the investment cost representing the feeder installation and the system operation cost representing the system power loss. We propose a properly designed heuristic strategy, which can handle the horizon-year expansion planning problem of power distribution network. We also used the loop selection method which can define the maximum loss reduction in the network to reduce calculation time, and proposed a new index of power loss which is designed to estimate the power loss reduction in the BE. The proposed index, can be considered with both sides, the low voltage side and voltage side branch connected with tie one. The performances of the proposed algorithms and loss index were shown with 32, 69 example bus system.
We have fabricated the two-dimensional inverted pendulum system and designed its controller. The two-dimensional inverted pendulum system, which is composed of X-Y table, is actuated through timing belt by each of two geared DC motors. And the control goal is that the rod is always kept to a vertical position to any distrubance and is quickly moved to the desired position. Because this system has generally nonlinear dynamic characteristics and X-axis and Y-axis move together, it is very difficult to find its exact mathematical model and to design its controller. Therefore, we have designed the PID controller with simple structure and excellent performance. Genetic algorithm(GA), which is blown as one of probabilistic searching methods, and human's heuristic control strategy are introduced to design an optimal PID controller. The usefulness of the proposed GA based PID coefficient searching technique is verified through the experiments and computer simulations.
This paper suggests a new heuristic to improve robotic cells efficiency with a finite buffer. An efficient heuristic for parts sequencing with this configuration is developed. Analyzing robot\\`s movements and defining the events for the completion times of robot\\`s segmental activities enable us to develop a mathematical model that can be used to estimate, the completion time in the robotic cell. The robotic cell is consisting of two computer numerical control machines and a finite buffer to manufacture multiple parts. The developed heuristic can be used to estimate an optimum or near optimum parts sequences for this configuration. Numerical examples are followed to show the validity of the heuristic.
This paper proposes a heuristic method for job shop scheduling with alternative machines. Our heuristic suggests two machine-selecting rules and two priority dispatching rules for modifying existent ones considering alternative machines, and then it extends existing nondelay/active job shop schedule generation. This heuristic provides good criteria(rules) in the selection of a proper machine among those performing a specific operation and for the dispatch of an operation to a selected machine and thus these rules permit the efficient job shop scheduling with alternative machines. The performances of our two machine-selecting rules in addition to the two priority dispatching rules, applied together with the existing 17 rules, are experimented and evaluated, respectively.
We developed two heuristic methods to solve the problem considering a fleet of ships delivering chemical products from terminals to terminals. We need to decide how much of each product to carry, on which ship, subject to the conditions that all terminals must have sufficient products to meet demand, and the stock levels of the products cannot exceed the inventory capacity of that terminal. Mathematical formulation and the optimal objective value for the small size problems are compared with two greedy heuristic methods developed in terms of solution qualities and computing time. Numerical experiments on test problems indicate that the heuristics are effective at finding good solutions quickly.
