  • Objective: The purpose of this study was to report the radiological and symptomatic changes in a patient with acute herniated lumbar disc due to coughing, treated with megadose pharmacopuncture and combined Korean medicine. Methods: MRI examination diagnosed an acute lumbar disc herniation by coughing. We performed a combination treatment of megadose pharmacopuncture and integrated Korean medicine. NRS, ODI, EQ-5D, SLR test, and big toe extension test were checked on admission, after two weeks, on discharge, and after four months to confirm symptom improvements. Results: In the acute stage of lumbar intervertebral disc rupture, megadose pharmacopuncture combined with Korean medicine treatment showed improvement in NRS, ODI, EQ-5D, SLRT, and big toe extension tests. In addition, absorption of the herniated intervertebral discs was observed through an MRI scan on discharge. Conclusions: For patients with herniated lumbar disc acutely deteriorated by coughing, a combination of megadose pharmacopuncture with Korean medicine treatment may be a solution.

  • Purpose : The purpose of the study was to examine lumbar pain through literature reviews about herniated intervertebral disc (HIVD). Methods : Diagnosis was made by patient's history, physical examination, simple radiography, myelography, spinal computerized tomography, electromyography, somatosensory evoked potential, etc. Results : There are two treatment modalities, one is conservative and the other is operative. About 90% of patients with HIVD have been recovered only by conservative treatment and therapeutic exercise was the most effective one among these conservative treatments. Conclusion : We consider HIVD can be treated with therapeutic exercise which can correct muscular imbalance and facet joint problems and make the degenerative process of intervertebral disc slower.

  • Objective: This study is to evaluate the effectiveness of the oriental medicine treatment on lumbar disc herniation. Subjects and Methods : The clinical analysis was done on 32 cases of patients with lumbar disc herniation diagnosed by lumbar CT scan. Patients who admitted In Cheongju Oriental Medicine Hospital from April 2007 to April 2008 were analyzed according to the distribution of sex, age, the period of disease, condition on admission, the symptom on admission, Admission day, the treatment efficacy at discharge day. Results : 1. The forties was the most, the acutest phase the most, the day of 8-14 days the most. 2. Multiple bulging disc in 37.5% of CT scan was the most common, followed by a single HNP was 28.1%. 3. Almost 81 % patients showed effective efficacy under VAS 3 at discharge day. 4. Single bulging and herniated disc were more short admission days than multiple bulging and herniated disc.

  • A herniated intervertebral disc is the most common type of soft tissue mass lesion within the lumbar spinal canal. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a useful tool for the assessment of patients with lower back pain and radiating pain, especially intervertebral disc herniation. MRI findings of intervertebral disc herniation are typical. However, from time to time, despite an apparently classic history and typical MRI findings suggestive of disc herniation, surgical exploration fails to reveal any lesion of an intervertebral disc. Our patient underwent lumbar disc surgery with the preoperative diagnosis of lumbar disc herniation; however, nothing could be found during the surgical procedure, except a swollen nerve root.

  • Objectives : This research is aimed to confirm the treating patients with herniated lumbar disc using Chuna treatment. Methods : Out of patients who were confirmed to have a herniated lumbar disc by MRI among the patients in oriental medical hospital of Kyungwon University from July 2005 to Dec 2006, we dived 15 people was treated common treatment, 15 people was treated both common treatment and Chuna treatment. We measured Visual Analog Scale(VAS) and symptom grade before and after treatment in each groups. Statistical analysis was performed by using SPSS program. Results : The result of the Visual Analog Scale(VAS) and symptom grade before and after treatment between two group, shows that the improvement of Back pain and Sciatica in common treatment with Chuna treatment group is more effective than that in only common treatment group.

Methods: The patient was treated by cervical traction technique which is one of the chuna manual theraphy with other conservative treatments including acupuncture, herbal mixture, bee-venom theraphy and TENS(Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation). Visual analogue scale(VAS) have been used for result report. Results: After the cervical traction technique, the VAS was significantly improved. Conclusions: It is thought that the chuna manual theraphy might be effective to the patient with soft herniated intervertebral cervical disc.
