Hermeneutical Philosophy and Philosophical Hermeneutics (해석학적 철학과 철학적 해석학)

  • The purpose of this thesis is to explain the difference between Heidegger's hermeneutical philosophy and Gadamer's philosophical hermeneutics. The difference is to say that Heidegger's philosophy begins with Aristotle's theory of category and transcendental philosophy. On the other hand, the beginning of Gadamer's philosophical research is Plato's dialog, philosophy and Hegels dialectic. 2. Heidegger regards humanism as a variant of the modern ideal of human beings. On the contrary, Gadamer understands humanism as a place where romantism leads to the ideals of human education. 3. Heidegger says that the hermeneutical circle is still a logical and existential structure of the circle. On the contrary, Gadamer understands the circle as a circle between the whole and the part. This circle is the law of traditional hermeneutics derived from the tradition of rhetoric. 4. Heidegger says Plato's philosophy is the first beginning of the substance metaphysic, Hegel's philosophy the end of the subject metaphysic. On the contrary, Gadamer says the hermeneutical understanding and the hermeneutical interpretation is endless. 5. Heidegger's ontology is as Sein zum Tode a future oriented and eschatological. On the contrary, Gadamer's hermeneutic is as Sein zum Text always the way to a past, the infinite openness.

The Lives of Daughters-in-Law Who Care for Parents with Dementia (치매노인을 돌보는 며느리의 삶 -해석학적 분석-)

  • This study was done to investigate the lives of the daughters- in- law caring for parents with dementia and participate in their lives through having quality time with them Data were collected by depth interviews and interpreted through the hermeneutic circle as follows. These daughters-in-law have conflict between social custom and subjective self. They had ambivalence toward their demented partents-in- law and were fighting a battle between rationality and emotions in their mind. These daughters-in law and mothers-in- law did not get along and the parents' dementia aggravated the relationships. They were alienated from their family by the parents with dementia. The indifference of their family especially their husbands, made these subjects live in misery. They cared for the demented mother-in-law with hatred. Even though they had this yoke, there daughters- in-law were not able to throw off the shackles of convention.

Tourist Photography as Representation and Performance: Focused on Rubber Duck Project Seoul (재현과 수행으로서의 관광객 사진: '러버덕 프로젝트 서울'을 중심으로)

  • Seokchon Lake, and the area surrounding it, have become symbolic with an environment of 'peace', 'delight', 'happiness', and 'healing' due to the large floating yellow rubber duck which sits within the lake. There exists, however, a hidden intention of a large corporation who wishes to make benefit of this installation and its healing properties. Nevertheless, the lake has become a hot destination for people to come and see the rubber duck and take romantic photos with it. The photographs taken and shared further expand the popularity and romantic environment of the duck and lake. This process is a perfectly hermeneutic circle. Self or group mediation through photographic performances with the rubber duck has allowed the lake to take on new meaning to visitors. For families taking photos together it has become a place of family bonding and love while for couples of any age it has been transformed into a place to express their love through pictures together with the duck. Even for selfie generation it has become a destination and muse. Tourists are not merely written upon, but are also enacting and inscribing places with their own stories. Therefore, photographic performances produce rather than consume and reflect geography of Seokchon lake.

An Epistemology of Geomorphology and An Ontological Approach to Geomorphology Education (지형 지식의 인식론적 특성과 존재론적 지형 교육)

  • The purpose of this paper is to suggest a particular approach to geomorphology education based on an epistemology (anti-realist of geomorphology knowledge. Anti-realist epistemology of geomorphology may be characterized by the belief that (1) geomorphology knowledge is made or constructed rather than discovered, (2) knowledge construction begins with the perception of meaningfulness of the landform, and (3) it means recognizing the given land in terms of shape or form; (4) the construction is, in other words, a subjective or inter-subjective interpretation by the perceivers; (5) knowledge develops along with the hermeneutic circles. Aims of geomorphology education according to this epistemology, may be (1) to have children not so much construct geomorphology knowledge as live the very construction, (2) to have children maintain an enduring interest in their surrounding landform, and (3) to have them appreciate the intimate connections between the landform of a region and the modes of living in that region. In short, aims of geomorphology education may have to be ontological, i.c., to have children engaged in the understanding as a process of living rather than for the resulting knowledge.

Using Practice Context Models to Knowledge Management in Proof-of-Concept Activities: A Contribution of Knowledge Networks and Percolation Theory

  • This study introduces novel research using Practice Context Models supported by Knowledge Networks and Percolation Theory with the aim to contribute to knowledge management in Proof-of-Concept (PoC) activities. The authors envision this proposal as a potential instrument to identify network structures based on a percolation (propagation) threshold and to analyze the importance of nodes (e.g., practitioners, practices, competencies, movements, and scenarios) during the percolation of knowledge in PoC activities. After thirty months immersed in the natural PoC habitat, acting as observers and practitioners, and supported by an ethnographic exercise and a designer-research mindset, the authors identified the production of meaning in PoC activities occurring in a hermeneutic circle characterized by the presence of several knowledge networks; thus, discovering the 'natural knowledge' in PoC as a spectrum of cognitive development spread throughout its network, as each node could produce and disseminate certain knowledge that flows and influences other nodes. Therefore, this research presents the use of Practice Context Models 'connected' to Knowledge Networks and Percolation Theory as a potential and feasible proposal to be built using the attribution of values (weights) to the nodes (e.g., practitioners, practices, competencies, movements, scenarios, and also knowledge) in the context of PoC with the aim to allow the players (e.g., PoC practitioners) to have more flexibility in building alliances with other players (new nodes); that is, focusing on those nodes with higher value (focus on quality) in collaboration networks, i.e., alliances (connections) with the aim to contribute to knowledge management in the context of PoC.

Issues of the Socio-historical Interpretation in Art - Interpretation of inter-dependency as Imputation and Circle - (예술에서 사회.역사적 해석의 문제 -귀속(歸屬)과 순환(循環)의 상호의존적 해석-)

  • Amongst various methods of interpreting art, a understanding of the intention of artistic creation has been traditionally considered the most essential. Hermeneutics is the typical way of approaching it. With a focus on interpretation and understanding of the object, Hermeneutics delves into methodological techniques of interpretation and understanding of the existence of art from ancient Greece to the present. Nevertheless, from the Hermeneutic viewpoint, art as the object of interpretation is not free from social conditions and tradition; for this reason, interpretation of art basically has a socio-historical aspect. The starting point of this thesis is to examine the methods of understanding art from the socio-historical viewpoint. For this purpose, I study the theory of Hermeneutics as a basic of socio-historical interpretation of art, calling for methodology I need to justify inter-dependency of the epistemological viewpoint aid the ontological viewpoint in interpretation of art. Here, I suggest 'imputation(Zurechung)' and 'cycle(Zirkel)' as methodological concepts to support interdependency of these two viewpoints in Hermeneutics. Zurechung means explanation of meaning based upon the higher standard that includes to object of interpretation, while Zirkel means perception of part in order to understand the whole and, in turn, recognition of the whole in order to understand the part. These two concepts function inter-dependently in clarifying the object of interpretation and various problems of understanding human beings derived from it in the process of interpretation. This is also a key to the explanation that the object in social condition is closely related to historical perspective.

A Qualitative Analysis of the Role of Music Contributing to Catharsis During Music Experience (음악 체험에서 카타르시스 경험에 기여한 음악의 역할에 대한 질적 분석)

  • This study explored the role and characteristics of music that contributed to experiences of catharsis in music. An empirical phenomenological study was conducted to explore catharsis with 12 adults. Phenomenological reduction, change of attitude, literature interpretation, and hermeneutic circle were used for data collection and analysis. As a result, three categories, five themes, and 11 sub-themes were identified. The first category, here and now in music consisted of two themes: aesthetic experiences and expansion of musical novelty. The second category, inner connection through music consisted of one theme, re-experience of internal emotions. The third category, immersion and engagement in music consisted of two themes: ventilating or deepening of emotions and internal dynamics. Based on these results, the cathartic characteristics of music are discussed. First, the aesthetics and novelty of music kept participants fully stay in music. Second, music induced a re-experiencing of emotions by triggering memories or stimulating unresolved emotions. Third, the elements of music promoted emotional ventilation, deepening, and internal dynamics. This study is meaningful because it qualitatively examined the roles and characteristics of music that contribute to cathartic experience in the general adult population.
