Selectivity and behaviour of EK-5439 in the soil as a candidate for rice herbicide (신규 제초제 후보 화합물 EK-5439의 선택성 및 토양 중 행동특성)

  • The characteristics of the experimental compound EK-5439 [3-Chloro-2-[4-chloro-2-fluoro-5-(5-methyl-3-phenyl-4,5-dihydroisoxazol-5-yl-methoxy)-phenyl]-4,5,6,7-tetrahydro-2H-indazole] was investigated to characterize as a new herbicide to use in rice field. The selectivity between rice and barnyardgrass was very good when treated from 0 to 4 days after seeding under soil application. In the overflowing experiment, herbicidal efficacy of EK-5439 was stabilized 12 hrs after application. Vertical migrations in submerged paddy soil of EK-5439 and oxadiazon were equally observed below a soil depth of 1 cm under 5 cm/day leaching condition. Half-lives for herbicidal efficacy of EK-5439 and oxadiazon were 6.1, and 9.6 days, respectively, under submerged paddy condition. EK-5439 showed rapid adsorption to the soil clay, such as bentonite.

A Study of Predicting the Severity Following Glufosinate Ammonium Containing Herbicide Poisoning Experienced in Single Emergency Medical Institution (단일 응급의료기관에서 경험한 글루포시네이트 암모니움 포함 제초제 중독 후 중증도 예측에 관한 연구)

  • Purpose: Owing to the increased agricultural use of the herbicide glufosinate ammonium (GLA), the incidence of GLA poisoning has recently increased. Therefore, we investigated the possible predictive factors associated with severe complications following GLA poisoning. Methods: A retrospective analysis of medical records was conducted based on 76 patients who had visited our regional emergency medical center with GLA poisoning from 2006 to 2017. Severe complications were defined as respiratory failure requiring intubation, systolic blood pressure less than 90 mmHg, Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) less than 8, and presence of seizure. Results: Age, ingested amount and ingested amount per weight were significantly greater in the severe group (p<0.001). PSS grade 2 or higher was more common in the severe group (p<0.001), and In addition, the APACHE II score was significantly higher in the severe group (p<0.001), as were the SOFA scores (p=0.002). Serum ammonia levels were significantly higher in the severe group (p=0.007), while MDRD-GFR was smaller in the severe group (p=0.002). The spot urine protein levels were significantly higher in the severe group (p=0.005), as was the urine protein to creatinine ratio (p=0.001). Upon multivariate analysis, the amount ingested per weight and PSS grade 2 or higher were identified as significant predictors. Conclusion: Our study showed that MDRD-GFR was significantly lower in the severe group after GLA poisoning. PSS grade 2 or higher and ingested amount per weight may be useful to evaluate the severity of complications after GLA poisoning.

Fact-finding survey on herbicide use in paddy rice at farmer's level (논 제초제 사용에 대한 농가실태조사)

  • A nation-wide fact-finding survey was done to provide the basic information for establishing the rational weed control scheme in paddy rice. A total of 445 respondents including 273 farmers and 172 pesticide dealers was involved in this survey. Dominant weeds in rice paddy field were Echinochloa crus-galli, Eleocharis kuroguwai, Sagittaria pygmaea, Sagittaria trifolia, etc.. Preferred herbicides widely used by farmners were ranked in the following order; butachlor 5GR, pyrazosulfuron-ethyl + molinate 5.07GR, molinate + cinosulfuron 5.08GR, meanwhile, those recommended by pesticide dealers were; pyrazosulfuron-ethyl + molinate 5.07GR, molinate + cinosulfuron 5.08GR, and butachlor 5GR. The guidelines to choose the preferred herbicides was primarily based on the experience, which was occupied about 45%. Approximately 56% of the farmers followed the recommended herbicide dosage and 43% of them applied the herbicides before weed germination (pre-emergence treatment). In addition, most farmers applied herbicides at least two times with systematic application schedule. Application method of granular formulation was broadcasting by hand, while that of sprayable ones was by high-pressure sprayer. Some farmers answered that they had experienced phytotoxicity in the crop by applied herbicides, of which higher experience was observed from the farmers who applied by high-pressure sprayer. It was analyzed significantly that the feasible herbicides to cause phytotoxicity in rice at farmer's level were butachlor 5GR, esprocarb + pyrazosulfuron-ethyl 5.07GR and bensulfuron-methyl + molinate 5.17 GR.

Interpretation of Weeding Efficacy by Mixture Use of Herbicide Combination, Oxyfluorfen and Glyphosate (Oxyfluorfen과 Glyphosate 조합처리(組合處理) 모형(模型)의 혼용효과(混用效果)에 대한 해석적연구(解釋的硏究))

  • The study was conducted to interprete the fluctuation of weed vegetation in plant-sociological impacts as affected by the mixture use of oxyfluorfen and glyphosate with various dosages. Also, intended to know the real interaction between two herbicides in weeding efficacies. The better efficacy from the above mixture was recognized than from the oxyfluorfen + paraquat mixture on the perennial-sites. In lower rate mixture of oxyfluorfen, the dominance index was increased by the annual grass species (ie. Digitaria), and of glyphosate by the biennial Stellaria and perennial species (ie. Artemisia). Also, the positive maximum action of both oxyfluorfen and glyphosate in various mixture rates was categorized upto 0.55kg ai/ha for oxyfluorfen and 0.35kg ai/ha for glyphosate, respectively. However, the interaction between the above two herbicides recognized actually as negative. Consequently, the use of mixture compound of oxyfluorfen with glyphosate are expected rather to promote the control efficacy of specific weed species, to enlarge the weeding spectrum and to prolong the weeding periods than to reduce the application rate of both chemicals depending on any synergic interactions.

  • This paper deals with herbicidal phytotoxicity which may occur because of unique properties of the Korean soils. Analysis of the Korean lowland and upland soils reveals that about 50% of the total area belongs to sandy loam and sandy gravel soils and most of both lowland and upland soils consists of kaolinite clay mineral. The chemical properties such as organic matter, pH, and cation exchange capacity show very low values by which there have been several instances of the herbicidal phytotoxicity occurred throughout the country. In addition, the paper emphasizes the need for selection and use of herbicides in the Korean soils.

Evaluation of Herbicides for Management of Weeds in Cultivation of Panax quinquefolius L.

  • Nine herbicide products (fluazifop-p-butyl, clethodim, MCPA-sodium, 2,4-0 amine, chlorthal dimethyl, diquat, glyphosate, ethalfluralin and oryzalin) were evaluated for use on ginseng (Panax quinquefolius). Products varied in their ability to suppress weeds and certain materials were phytotoxic to ginseng in some trials. Chlorthal dimethyl (broadleaf weeds), MCPA-sodium (broadleaf weeds), fluazifop-p-butyl (grass weeds), and clethodim (grass weeds) were found to be effective as weed control agents and did not adversely affect ginseng growth. Other products tested were either not efficacious or were phytotoxic to ginseng in some trials. Weed populations were mainly introduced into the planting sites via the straw mulches used in ginseng cultivation.

Fate of Bentazon Metabolites in Soils

  • This review was to elucidate the fate of Bentazon(3-isopropyl-1H-2,1,3-benzothiadiazin-4(3H)-one-2,2-dioxide) and its metabolites in soil. Bentazon is rapidly degraded to form polar metabolites which are mostly adsorbed to soil components, such as humin or fulvic acid, as non extractable forms and mineralized into $CO_2$ by light or micro-organisms in both aerobic or nonaerobic condition. The degradation of Bentazon is dependent on the rate of organic matters in soil and the use of land for the tillage. The degradation rate is decreased as the amount of organic matters in soil increases and if the land is under use for tillage. Sorption and mobility of Bentazon depends on soil pH and the content of organic matters in soil. Usually, the sorption of the metabolites of Bentazon is decreased with increase in the mobility and pH. Almost all of Bentazon is degraded within rhizosphere or forms conjugate bonds with soil organic matters before it reaches to the ground water.

Current status, mechanism and control of herbicide resistant weeds in rice fields of Korea (한국 논에서 제초제 저항성잡초의 발생 현황, 메카니즘 및 방제)

  • Sulfonylurea (SU)-resistant weeds of eight annual weeds, Monochoria vaginalis, Scirpus juncoides and Cyperus difformis, etc., and four perennial weeds, Scirpus planiculmis, Sagittaria pigmaea, Eleocharis acicularis and Sagittaria trifolia as of 2013 since identification Monochoria korsakowii in the reclaimed rice field in 1998. And the resistant Echinochloa oryzoides to ACCase and ALS inhibitors has been confirmed in rice fields of the southern province, Korea in 2009. In the beginning, the M. vaginalis, S. juncoides and C. difformis of these SU-resistant weeds were rapidly and individually spreaded in different fields, however, these resistant weeds have been occurring simultaneously in the same filed recently. The resistant biotype by weed species demonstrated about 10-to 1,000-fold resistance, based on $GR_{50}$ values of the SU herbicides tested. And the resistant biotype of E. oryzoides to cyhalofop-butyl, pyriminobac-methyl, and penoxsulam was about 14, 8, and 11 times more resistant than the susceptible biotype base on $GR_{50}$ values. The products and applied area of SU-included herbicides have been increased rapidly, and have accounted for about 69% and 96% in Korea, respectively. In Korea, the main cause of SU-resistant weed is extensive use of these herbicides. The top ten herbicides by applied area were composed of all SU-included herbicides by 2003. The concentrated and successive treatment of ACCase and ALS inhibitors for control of barnyardgrass in rice led up to the resistance of E. oryzoides. Also, SU-herbicides like pyrazosulfuron-ethyl and imazosulfuron which effective to barnyardgrass can be bound up with the resistance of E. oryzoides. The ALS activity isolated from the resistant biotype of M. korsakowii to SU-herbicides tested was less sensitive than that of susceptible biotype. The concentration of herbicide required for 50% inhibition of ALS activity ($I_{50}$) of the SU-resistant M. korsakowii was 14-to 76-fold higher as compared to the susceptible biotype. No differences were observed in the rates of [$^{14}C$]bensulfuron uptake and translocation. Acetolactate synthase (ALS) genes from M. vaginalis resistant and susceptible biotypes against SU-herbicides revealed a single amino acid substitution of proline (CCT), at 197th position based on the M. korsakowii ALS sequence numbering, to serin (TCT) in conserved domain A of the gene. Carfentrazone-ethyl and pyrazolate were used mainly to control SU-resistant M. vaginalis by 2006 in Korea. However, the alternative herbicides such as benzobicyclone, to be possible to control simultaneously the several resistant weeds, have been developing and using broadly, because the several resistant weeds have been occurring simultaneously in the same fieled. The top ten herbicides by applied area in Korea have been occupied by products of 3-way mixture type including herbicides with alternative mode of action for the herbicide resistant weeds. Mefenacet, fentrazamide and cafenstrole had excellent controlling effects on the ACCase and ALS inhibitors resistant when they were applied within 2nd leaf stage.

Development of Weed Control System in Rice (수도작 잡초방제체계의 전망)

  • Weed control is an essential part in rice culture and has been practiced by hand. But the shortage of man power in rural area in recent years has brought about the use of herbicides. The effective use of herbicides in rice has contributed toward improving labor situation and maintaining rice production. The use of herbicides will extend more in the future. The only limitation of present uses of monoherbicides might be the predominant growth of a certain weeds in paddy field, and subsequent effect on ecology system. It is, therefore, wanted to develop a herbicide which will be effective on several kinds of weeds. In the weed control system, ecological and integrated weed control would be necessary in the future. To obtain the most effective weed control, studies on physiological ecotype of weeds and machanism of herbicides and their interactions will be necessary.

Weed control and herbicide usage by seed potato growers in Kangwon alpine area (강원도 고냉지 씨감자 경작자들의 잡초방제 및 제초제 사용 실태)

  • The objective was to know if seed potato farmers in Kangwon alpine area control weeds effectively and use herbicides properly to control weeds. Seed potato farmers in Pyongcbang, Hoengsong, and Kangnung have noxious weeds, such as marsh pepper, lambsquarters, barnyard grass, mugwort, asiatic dayflower, hairy carbgrass, ladysthumb, common chickweed, field horsetail, and common purslain, in their farmyard. These are controlled by a combination of physical and chemical weed control methods. However, several weeds such as marsh pepper, field horsetail and, mugwort are poorly controlled by 2-fold amount of several herbicides, including paraquat, pendimethalin, and metribuzin (58% of the answered). Herbicides are not selected and used in a proper manner by seed potato farmers: most of farmers selected herbicides by their experience (51% of the answered) and dealers recommendation (34% of the answered), while only a few farmers of the answered took advantage of the Farmers Handbook for Herbicide Application. In addition, the selected herbicides, including non-registered ones such as paraquat and fluazifop-butyl, are applying three to five years in a succession. With these improper selection and usage of herbicides, sixty-seven percent of the answered farmers have experienced crop damage and seventy-five percent have poisoning. We conclude that a systemic educational program for the proper selection and use of herbicides is needed for seed potato farmers in Kangwon alpine area.
