Purpose: Agent Orange (AO) is a herbicide and defoliant used by the United States and its military allies during the Vietnam War. Pneumonia is a common cause of death among Vietnam veterans in our hospital. There have been no previous studies researching any association between AO exposure and the prognosis for pneumonia. The primary objective of this study was to investigate associations between AO exposure and 30-day mortality due to pneumonia. The secondary objective was to examine the clinical factors associated with therapeutic outcomes in veterans with pneumonia, and to assess the prevalence of combined diseases in AO-exposed veterans. Methods: This study retrospectively included veteran patients diagnosed with pneumonia in the emergency department and hospitalized between February 2014 and March 2018. The enrolled patients were grouped according to their defoliant exposure history, and the clinical information of defoliant-exposed and non-defoliant-exposed groups were compared. Patients were divided according to 30-day mortality, and significant factors influencing mortality were evaluated by using univariate analysis and multivariate analysis. The final multivariate model revealed the effect of AO exposure on therapeutic outcomes of pneumonia. Results: A total of 1006 patients were analyzed. Of these, 276 patients had a history of AO exposure, whereas 730 patients had not been exposed. Factors positively associated with 30-day mortality were malignancy, respiratory rate, blood urea nitrogen, and albumin which was negatively associated with mortality. Conclusion: Exposure to defoliant is not associated with 30-day mortality in patients with pneumonia. However, veterans with defoliant exposure are associated with a high prevalence of diabetes mellitus, hypertension, cerebrovascular accident, malignancy, and chronic kidney disease.
Weed control is an essential part in rice culture and has been practiced by hand. But the shortage of man power in rural area in recent years has brought about the use of herbicides. The effective use of herbicides in rice has contributed toward improving labor situation and maintaining rice production. The use of herbicides will extend more in the future. The only limitation of present uses of monoherbicides might be the predominant growth of a certain weeds in paddy field, and subsequent effect on ecology system. It is, therefore, wanted to develop a herbicide which will be effective on several kinds of weeds. In the weed control system, ecological and integrated weed control would be necessary in the future. To obtain the most effective weed control, studies on physiological ecotype of weeds and machanism of herbicides and their interactions will be necessary.
Phenoxy compounds, 2,4-Dichlorophenol acetoxy acid (2,4-D) and 2,4-dichlorophenol (DCP), are widely used as a hormonal herbicide and intermediate for pesticide manufacturing, respectively. In order to assess the potential of these compounds as endocrine disruptors, we studied the androgenicity of them wing in vivo and in vitro androgenicity assay system. Administration of 2,4-D (50 mg/kg/day, p.o.) or DCP (100 mg/kg/day, p.o.) to rats caused an increase in the tissue weight of ventral prostate, Cowpers gland and glands penis. These increase of androgen-dependent tissues were additively potentiated when rats were simultaneously treated with low dose of testosterone (1 g/kg, s.c.). 2,4-D increased about 350% of the luciferase activity in the PC cells transiently cotransfected phAR and pMMTV-Luc at concentration of $10^{-9}$ M. In 2,4-D or DCP-treated castrated rats, testosterone 6$\beta$-hydroxylase activity was not significantly modulated even when rats were co-treated with testosterone. In vitro incubation of 2,4-D and DCP with microsomes at 50 $\mu$M inhibited testosterone 6$\beta$-hydroxylase activity about 27% and 66% in rat liver microsomes, about 44% and 54% in human liver microsomes and about 50% and 45% in recombinant CYP3A4 system, respectively. The amounts of total testosterone metabolites were reduced about 33% and 75% in rat liver microsomes, 69% and 73% in human liver microsomes and 54% and 64% in recombinant CYP3A4 by 2,4-D or DCP, respectively. Therefore, the additive androgenic effect of 2,4-D or DCP by the co-administration of the low dose of testosterone may be due to the increased plasma level of testosterone by inhibiting the cytochrome P450-mediated metabolism of testosterone. These results collectively suggested that 2,4-D and DCP may act as androgenic endocrine disrupter by binding to the androgen receptor as well as by inhibiting the metabolism of testosterone.

This study was conducted to investigate the herbicidal activity against resistant biotype on sulfonylurea (SU) herbicides such as Scirpus juncoides and Monochoria vaginalis at the glasshouse and paddy rice cultivation area. In order to investigate resistance breakability against SU-resistanted annual weeds, new rice herbicides containing tefuryltrione [p-hydrophenyl pyruvate dioxygenase (HPPD) inhibitor] were tested. In both lab test and field experiment, tefuryltrione mixture, 4-HPPD inhibitor had shown excellent efficacy with a bleaching on the leaves of resistant annual weeds at early time after treatment and showed excellent persistance. Especially, tefuryltrione mixture had shown excellent controlling effect on annual and perennial SU-resistant S. juncoides in the regional field experiment. In phytotoxicity test, this tefuryltrione mixture had shown good selectivity to common rice species.
This experiment was conducted to find the most suitable crop establishment method and weed management practices for transplanted aman rice in Bangladesh. Rice variety Bangladesh Rice Research Institute (BRRI) dhan44 was used as planting materials where three crop establishment methods ($T_1$: direct wet seeding by drum seeder; $T_2$: hand broadcasting; $T_3$: transplanting) and four weeding options ($W_1$: Hand weeding (HW); $W_2$: BRRI weeder+HW; $W_3$: Herbicide+HW; and $W_4$: no weeding) were tested. Among the crop establishment methods, the highest grain yield ($5.12t\;ha^{-1}$) was obtained with the $T_3$, while the highest benefit cost ratio (BCR) of 2.08 was found in $T_2$. In case of the weed management method, $W_1$ showed superior results on the plant $density/m^2$ (139.66) at 60 days after transplanting (DAT), grain yield ($4.97t\;ha^{-1}$), and BCR (2.03). On the other hand, the highest plant dry matter (36.20 g) at 60 DAT and the highest yield ($6.10t\;ha^{-1}$) were obtained in a $T_3W_1$ combination. The results of this study show that the productivity of rice during aman season could be most significantly increased with the use of transplanting ($T_3$) alone, hand weeding ($W_1$) alone, or a combination of the two methods ($T_3W_1$).
When paraquat was added to the bacterial membrane or mitochondrial suspension, the mixture turned dark blue, but the color was disappeared by aeration. The same phenomenon was seen when electrons were supplied to the paraquat. Blue color appeared from near the cathode, and then spreaded to whole transit system. Coloration was accelerated by addition of alkali, but the color was reduced by addition of acid or oxygen. Paraquat exhibited absorption at ultraviolet region by electron transfer at the concentrations as low as 1.0 mM which did not exert difficulty in showing color reaction. Paraquat caused the increase of the optical density at 340 nm by electron transit, and an aspect of that had a strong resemblance to NADH. The acute toxic action of paraquat seemes to depend on inhibition of energy metabolism cased by paraquat action of electron donor and acceptor.
The effects of heavy metals Cd, Cu, Cr, Ni, and Zn on the degradation of the insecticide fenitrothion (O, O-dimethyl O-4-nitro-m-tolyl phosphorothioate), the fungicide IBP (5-benzyl O, O-diisopropyl phosphorothioate), and the herbicide butachlor (N-butoxymetyl-2-chloro-2', 6'-diethylacetanilide) in flooded soils were examined in the laboratory. The degradation of the 3 pesticides in soil was greatly inhibited by the amendment of the 5 heavy metals. The inhibition rate was high in the order of butachlor>IBP>fenitrothion. Populations of fenitrothion-and butachlor-degrading microbes, which were counted by the MPN method, were lower in heavy metals added soil than in the control soil. The effect of heavy metals on the degradation of the 3 pesticides in soil varied with the kind and concentration of heavy metals and the kind of pesticides.
The effects of soil environmental conditions on the rate of degradation of fungicide IBP (Iprobenfos, S-benzyl O, O-diisopropyl phosphorothioate) in the soils under flooded condintions were examined in the laboratory. IBP in soil was degraded more slowly under flooded conditions than under upland conditions. The degradation greatly varied among soils, and the degradation rate was negatively correlated with the content of soil organic matter. Degradation of IBP was influenced by the soil temperature and the amount of IBP applied. The rate of degradation in soil was remarkably inhibited by the amendment of rice straw but not affected by the treatment of mixed-fertilizer, and insecticide fenitrothion and herbicide butachlor. The degradation of IBP was assumed to be due to microorganisms, especially aerobic microbes, as no degradation was observed in sterilized soil.
Weeds emerging on winter wheat and barley field at early spring are troublesome, even with pre-emergence application of herbicides such as butachlor, tribunil, etc. Searching the proper post-applicating herbicides to control those weeds, three herbicides; ioxynil, bromoxynil and MCPA were evaluated with weeding efficacies in barley field. Tank mixture of bromoxynil and MCPA was the most excellent in weeding efficacy, especially in higher mixing rate at early April application to the broad-leaf weeds, among others.

Paraquat, is a widely used for its great effect as a herbicide. But the mortality rate by paraquat intoxication is known to be very high. It is thought to act by changing form to superoxide and peroxide free radical. Almost paraquat intoxication is through ingestion. A few intoxication of paraquat is through skin absorption. But there was no known death case through skin absorption. We experienced a case of a expired patient by paraquat intoxication through skin abrasion and scratching wound. A 75-year-old man was visited emergency room after motorcycle accident during transporting paraquat. He has multiple abrasion and scratching wound on extremities, and pelvic bone fracture. There was no evidence of ingestion of paraquat. But serum/urine gramoxone level was all positive. In spite of wound irrigation and hemoperfusion, his condition was been gone form bed to worse. 2 days after, multiple organ failure and the respiratory arrest were developed and he was expired. Paraquat intoxication through skin wound is extremely dangerous and death by that could possibly happen
