In this study, we investigated the effects of MOK pharmacopuncture at high-doses which are increased 10 to 100-fold in clinics, on propylthiouracil (PTU)-induced hypothyroidism in rats and the safety. We measured the changes of body weight, food and water intake, body temperature, the serum levels of thyroid hormones (TSH, T3, and T4), AST and ALT, glucose, lipid metabolites (total cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, and triglyceride) and observed histopathological changes of thyroid tissues by H&E staining. We also analyzed the peaks of constituents of MOK using HPLC. In the results, the treatment of MOK pharmacopuncture at high-dose (30 mg/kg) in hypothyroidism-induced rats for 2 weeks was shown the improvement effects on the decrease of body weight, food intake, and body temperature, The MOK pharmacopunture at high dose regulated the imbalance of thyroid hormones, glucose, and lipid metabolites and also inhibited the structural damages of thyroid tissues. In liver damage, the MOK pharmacopuncture at high dose reduced the increase of AST and ALT levels in hypothyroid rats. We identified the MOK constituents in HPLC analysis. In conclusion, the treatment of MOK pharmacopuncture at high dose has a therapeutic effect on hypothyroidism without liver toxicity, suggesting that the MOK pharmacopuncture be usefully applicable to treat with hypothyroidism in clinics.

Objectives: To identify changes in the subjects and methods of Herbal Medicine Consumption Survey, and analyze trend of the key results Methods: The population, methods, and items of the basic reports of all Surveys on Consumption of Herbal Medicine(HM) were organized in a time-series manner. The analysis items were trend in the purchase of standardized HM; consumption value share, and price of prepared HM; type of herbal dispensary; and awareness of HM policy in Koran Medicine(KM) institutions. Results: The price of HM preparations showed an upward trend in 2011, 2014, and 2017 surveys, and decreased in the 2020 survey. However, despite this recent decrease, the 2021 survey also saw the highest proportion of HM users reporting that price of herbal decoction is expensive. Furthermore, the demand for expanded coverage of herbal decoction was the greatest for the expansion of health insurance benefits. Efforts such as adjusting the number of covered diseases and the cost of health insurance coverage would be necessary. Regarding decoction dispensaries the proportion of HM hospitals using only extramural herbal dispensaries increased. Finally, the consumption of HM and the size of the HM industry has continued to expand due to the large-scale branding of KM institutions and the expansion of health insurance coverage. Conclusion: Future surveys must standardize and unify the items for the time-series continuity and compare the results with government statistics reports on HM to increase reliability. Moreover, specialized survey items may be developed for KM, to establish a better and efficient distribution system for domestic HMs.
Objectives : This study aimed to find out the future direction of accreditation system of Extramural herbal dispensaries (EHD) by comparing the current criteria of EHD and the existing Korea good manufacturing practice (GMP) regulations. Methods : Among the accreditation criteria of EHD, criteria of general herbal medicine was compared with the pharmaceutical GMP of Korea. The regulations of the accreditation of EHD and the regulations of KGMP were compared and organized with similar things based on the index of KGMP. All criteria from both were extracted for each element, classified into key-words and evaluated by dividing them into the same, similar one and no-matching. Results : Among the 189 criteria of KGMP, 77 criteria were consistent with the accreditation of EHD, and 15 criteria were similar. Based on the accreditation of EHD, 70.4% of the criteria were consistent or similar to KGMP. There were a total of 27 key-words only in the GMP criteria and not in the EHD one. Hence, a total of 25 key-words only in the EHD criteria and not in the GMP one. There were 12 similar key-words, and among them, there were 4 key-words in which accreditation of EHD was more specific than the KGMP. Conclusions : The criteria of general herbal medicine in EHD showed a similar or equivalent level of accreditation criteria compared to that of pharmaceutical GMP in Korea, and it ts believed that it should be considered at the current level to reflect the characteristics of herbal medicine.
This study analyzed mycotoxins, aflatoxin B1, B2, G1, G2, fumonisin B1, B2, ochratoxin A and zearalenone, using LC-MS/MS and conducted risk assessment on 54 samples of seeds distributed in SeoulYangnyeongsi and the management status of extramural herbal dispensary facility. The matched calibration showed a good linearity as observed in 6 concentration levels(r2>0.999) as a result of method validation applied with Arecae semen. Limits of detection(LOD) and quantification(LOQ) were in the range of 0.02-0.11 ㎍/kg and 0.08-0.34 ㎍/kg, respectively. Recoveries also estimated, ranging from 65.1-99.7% with relative standard deviation(RSD) 0.5-6.3%. As a result of the method on 54 samples, mycotoxins were detected in 16 samples. Among them, two Thujae semen showed a degree of concentration that exceeded the aflatoxin specification. In the risk assessment, the human exposure safety standard values were calculated as ADI(Acceptable Daily Intake) for aflatoxin B1, fumonisin and zearalenone. Ochratoxin A was calculated as PTWI(Provisional Tolerable Weekly Intake). The MOE(Margine of Exposure) of aflatoxin B1 was in the range of 40.36-3536.88. And no items exceeded 100% in %TDI(Tolerable Daily Intake) and %TWI(Tolerable Weekly Intake) of fumonisin, zearalenone and ochratoxin A.
Objectives The purpose of this study is to help improve the management of traditional Korean medical(TKM) clinics and the policies for supporting them, by conducting a survey of the practitioners of TKM. Methods Stratified sampling was conducted based on regional location, and 700 samples were selected in a random manner from the membership list. The questionnaire was delivered and returned by mail. The survey was conducted between 20 July and 31 August 2010. A total of 177 questionnaires (recovery rate: 25.28%) were recovered and analyzed for the study. Results 1. The the survey indicate that the overall size of TKM clinics has fallen compared with previous survey, while the average number of beds per clinic has remained unchanged at 7.9. The sale of medicine as a proportion of total monthly sales has increased. 2. There has been no change in the composition of clinical staff as there are three nursing assistants. Although the average daily number of patients to clinics has remained at around 33.90 compared with ten years ago, the number of patients requiring seeking acupuncture treatment has increased while the number of those treated with medication has decreased. 3. Clinicians in TKM have indicated their preference for a binary system that separates TKM from western medicine (57.4%). The respondents do not favor the separation of dispensary from medical practice (81.5%), marks of origin for medicinal herbs (68.9%), disclosure of the prescriptions (67.2%), and the overseas expansion of Korean medical services (70.4%). However, they indicated that they are very much in favor of being granted the authority to employ and give orders to medical technicians (96.0%). 4. The respondents selected Korea as the country that maintains a proper academic system for traditional medicine (45.5%), and are not in favor of opening Korea's traditional medicine market under an Free Trade Agreement(FTA) with China (72.7%). Conclusion The overall status of the management of TKM clinics has declined compared with the preceding decade. There has been only a slight change in clinicians' opinion of the related policies and regulatory issues.
