Effects of feeding evening primrose oil and hemp seed oil on the deposition of gamma fatty acid in eggs (삼씨유와 달맞이유의 급여가 계란 내 감마지방산 축적에 미치는 영향)

  • Hemp seed oil and evening primrose oil were incorporated into the diets of laying hens for 5 weeks and the level of gamma fatty acid in the eggs that the treated hens laid was then evaluated. Hens were fed corn-soybean based diets that contained 5% tallow, 5% corn oil (CO), 5% hemp seed oil (HSO), or 5% evening primrose oil (EPO). The hemp seed oil and evening primrose oil influenced the amount of gamma linolenic acid found in the eggs through blood. The level of gamma linolenic acid in the plasma was significantly higher in hens that received the HSO and EPO diets than in those that received the tallow and CO diets. The HSO and EPO diets led to a 1.09% and 4.87% increase in egg gamma linolenic acids, respectively, when compared with eggs produced by hens treated with tallow and CO. Taken together, these data demonstrate that healthy eggs with increased gamma linolenic acids can be generated by minor diet modifications when hemp seed oil or evening primrose oil is included in the hen diet.

  • The objective of this study was to determine the effect of dietary oils on the levels of the ${\gamma}-linolenic$ acid in chicken meat lipids. Three hundred ten five, 1-d old, male, Ross strain, broiler chicks were fed for 35 d to compare diets containing evening primrose oil(EPO) and hemp seed oil(HO) to a control diet. Fatty acid composition of lipid from chicken skin, thigh and breast muscle were determined at the end of the trial. The level of ${\gamma}-linolenic$ acid of lipids from chicken meat fed diets containing EPO or HO was significantly higher than that of the control group(p<0.05). The level of ${\gamma}-linolenic$ acid of lipids from chicken skin was highest in the group, which had been fed the EPO 0.85%, followed in order by EPO 0.7%, 0.5%, EPO mixed oil, HO and HO mixed oil. There was a significant difference in the level of ${\gamma}-linolenic$ acid of chicken skin between the control and treatment groups(p<0.05). The level of ${\gamma}-linolenic$ acid of lipids from chicken thigh muscle was also similar to skin, and significantly higher than that of the control group(p<0.05). The level of ${\gamma}-linolenic$ acid of lipids from chicken breast muscle was highest in the group, which had been fed the EPO 0.5%, followed in order by EPO 0.7%, 0.85%, HO 0.5% and HO mixed oil. There was a significant difference in the level of ${\gamma}-linolenic$ acid of chicken breast muscle between the control and treatment groups(p<0.05).

Effects of Dietary γ-Fatty Acids on the Fatty Acid Composition of Pork and Plasma Lipids in Swine (감마지방산의 급여가 돼지의 혈액지질 및 고기부위별 지방산조성에 미치는 영향)

  • We report that the gamma linolenic acid content of pork is higher in finishing pigs fed diets containing hemp seed oil, evening primrose oil or borage oil as the sources of gamma linolenic acid. Thirty-six three crossing swines ($Landrace{\times}Yorkshire{\times}Duroc$), 80 kg in body weight, were randomly separated into four treatment groups with three pens per treatment and three animals per pen. The finishing swines were fed the experimental diets for 35 days until they reached the market weight of 110 kg. The animals were assigned to the four experimental diets: control diet containing 5.00% tallow, T1 containing 5.00% hemp seed oil (hemp seed oil 40:soybean oil 60), T2 containing 5.00% evening primrose oil (primrose oil 40:soybean oil 60) and T3 containing 5.00% borage oil (borage oil 40:soybean oil 60). The plasma triacylglycerol and total cholesterol content of the swine in the gamma fatty acids-fed groups were significantly (p<0.05) lower than those in the control group. No gamma linolenic acid was detected in the plasma of the control group, while tile level of gamma linolenic acid treatment groups was significantly (p<0.05) higher than the control in the order of T3, T2 and T1. Moreover, the level of gamma linolenic acid increased with increasing number of feeding days. There was a significant difference between the treatment groups (p<0.05). There was a difference in the amount of saturated fatty acid and polyunsaturated fatty acid accumulated in the pork according to the treatment groups or the parts of the pork meat. The level of n-3 fatty acid of pork was highest in T1, which had been fed the hemp seed oil, followed in order by T3 and T2 (p<0.05). The content of gamma linolenic acid in pork was highest in T3, which had been fed the borage oil, followed in order by T2 and T1 (p<0.05). In particular, the level of gamma linolenic acid in pork increased in the order of the back fat, pork belly, ham and loin.

  • Hemp [Cannabis sativa L.] has been cultivated as a fiber crop for long history, but it was a good oil crop because its seed contain plenty of lipid which is high ratio of unsaturated fatty acid. Hemp seed oil was extracted with a extruding method in many countries including Europe. The color of oil extracted with extruding method is dark green which could be difficult to attract consumer's interest in Korea because of insufficient information about hemp seed oil. This study was conducted to know correct information about hemp seed oils which were extracted with pressuring and extruding methods. In extruding method, seeds were crushed during the extracting process and discharged oil cake in shape of thin ribbon, but maintained seed shape although the seed were slightly flatted in pressuring method. Oil yield were higher in the extruding method in comparison with pressuring method. The oil have lower degree of lightness but higher degree of greenness and yellowness in the extruding method in comparison with pressuring method because of higher content of chlorophyll A, B and carotenoid. In fatty acid composition, the ratio of palmitic acid, stearic acid, oleic acid and ${\gamma}$-linolenic acid were higher but linoleic acid and ${\alpha}$-linolenic acid were lower in the extruding method in comparison with pressuring method. The content of total tocopherol and ${\gamma}$-tocopherol were lower in the extruding method in comparison with pressuring method.

Mutagenic and Antimutagenic Effects of Hemp Seed Oil Evaluated by Ames Salmonella Testing (삼종실유의 항돌연변이 효과)

  • We examined the in vitro mutagenic and antimutagenic effects of hexane-extracted hemp (Cannabis sativa L. subsp. sativa var. sativa) seed oil (HO) with and without S9-mediated metabolic activation, using the TA98 and TA100 Salmonella Typhimurium strains. The MTT assay revealed no cytotoxicity in HepG2 cells for HO quantities $\leq400g$/mL. In the mutagenicity test, revertant colonies did not exceed spontaneous colonies in number. Colony numbers did not increase in either strain after HO treatment, with or without metabolic activation. HO showed no mutagenic effects and did not induce a mutation in either strain. In the antimutagenicity test, HO reduced the number of mutated colonies induced by 4NQO in both strains. The inhibition rates of HO (TA98, 21-91%; TA100, 21-85%) indicated a potent reduction in mutagenicity induced by 4NQO. HO showed no significant mutagenicity and may have antimutagenic effects, as assessed by Ames testing.

Effect of hemp seed oil on lipid metabolism in rats fed a high-cholesterol diet (햄프씨드 오일이 고콜레스테롤식이를 급여한 흰쥐의 지질대사에 미치는 영향)

  • Purpose: This study evaluates the potential protective effects of hemp (Cannabis sativa L.) seed oil supplementation in rats fed a high-cholesterol diet. Methods: Rats were fed a 1.25% cholesterol diet for 8 weeks, followed by oral administration of either of the two doses of hemp seed oil (HO) (0.5 mL/kg (HOL group) or 1 mL/kg (HOH group) body weight/day) or simvastatin at 10 mg/kg body weight/day. Oxidative stress, lipids, liver enzymes, and renal markers were measured in the serum. Western blot analysis was applied for evaluating the expressions of inflammatory makers. Results: Except for HDL-cholesterol, the altered levels of lipoproteins, aminotransferases, urea, and creatine kinases in hypercholesterolemic rats were significantly corrected by HO administration. Especially, compared to the HOH group, HOL treatment further reduced AST, ALT, creatinine, TC, and LDL-cholesterol levels. Moreover, both the atherogenic index and cardiac risk factor (CRF) in the HOL group were more restrained compared to the HOH group. Increased levels of p-AMPK coincided with the inhibition of SREBP-2 activation which subsequently suppressed the expression of HMGCR. Nuclear factor (NF)-κB activation coincided with the PI3K/Akt pathway activation and the increased phosphorylation of p38; these levels were significantly suppressed by HO treatment. In addition, HO treatment markedly reversed the changes in chemokines such as ICAM-1, VCAM-1, and MCP-1. Histological alterations induced by cholesterol overload in cardiac and hepatic tissues were ameliorated by HO supplementation. Conclusion: Taken together, our results indicate a low concentration of HO demonstrates improved dysfunctions caused by a high-cholesterol diet via inhibition of the PI3K/Akt/NF-κB signaling pathway.

A Study on the Composition of Fatty Acids of Hempseed (대마(Carnnabis sativa L.)씨의 지방산 조성에 관한 연구)

  • This investigation on the composition of fatty acids of hempseed through gas -chromatography analysis found the follwing results. Myristic acid and other ten materials were detected. And there was mainly composed of myristic acid 29.4%, Palmitoleic acid 16.2%, linoleic acid 14.9%, oleic acid 12.4%. It also showed that heptadecanoic acid 10.8%, erucic acid 0.5%, docosahexaenoic acid 0.3% and essential fatty acid were contained 11.9% between them. As stearic acid, docosahexaenoic acid, linoleic acid and arachidonic acid made lower cholesterol level in body, they will help prevention of senile disease with the oil d hemp seed.

Variation on Fatty Acid Profile Including ${\gamma}-Linolenic$ acid among Hemp (Cannabis sativa L.) Accessions (대마 유전자원의 지방산 조성과 감마리놀렌산 함량변이)

  • Hemp is cultivated to produce fiber and seeds for extracting vegetable oil. This study was carried out to obtain reliable data on fatty acid profile including ${\gamma}-linolenic$ acid (GLA) in seeds of hemp accessions with regard to suitability for both human nutrition and pharmaceutical purposes. The ratio of unsaturated fatty acid including ${\alpha}-linolenic$ acid were high but saturated fatty acid including palmitic acid were low in the seeds of hemp accessions, perilla and evening primrose. The ratio of GLA in fatty acid profile of evening primrose and hemp seeds were 12.5% and 2.1 %, respectively but not detected in perilla seeds. In the fatty acid profile of hemp seeds accessions, the range and coefficient of variation of GLA were $0.8%{\sim}3.8%$ and 42.9%, respectively which are highest among the fatty acid. Among the major characteristics and fatty acid ratios, flowering date and ${\alpha}-linolenic$ acid showed highly positive correlation but not showed any significant correlation between THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol) and any fatty acids. Among the fatty acid ratios, negative correlation were showed between palmitic acid and ${\gamma}-linolenic$ acid, and showed highly negative correlation between oleic acid and ${\alpha}-linolenic$ acid, linoleic acid and a-linolenic acid. The accessions of high GLA ratio were originated from Europe including Central Russia, and were short in flowering date and stem height.

A study of dietetic on the constipation (변비(便秘)의 식료방법(食療方法)에 관한 연구(硏究))

  • Objectives : This research examined about dietary therapy on the constipation based on the literary findings, for clinical treatment and prevention of the constipation. Methods : This Research examined on histories, compositions, applications, and effects of the constipation on about 100 cases of dietary therapy of the constipation from recent Chinese literatures Results : 1. Various vegetables, animals and mineral materials including herbs, grains, vegetables, fruits, food and drink were used for the dietary therapy. 2. Methods of the preparation for use as therapeutics were decoction, pulvis, gruel, medicinal wine, cake, tea, paste and gelatin and etc. 3. Frequently used materials were sesame oil, honey, ear mushroom, shiitake mushroom, kelp, walnut seed, hemp seed, groundnut, glutinous rice, apricot stone, yellow bean peel, radish, potato, spinage, and spring onion. Conclusion : Though dietary therapy for the constipation is not based on clinical or experimental data, but through experience. It is mostly based on Yin-Yang and five elements, visceral manifestation, channels and their collateral channels and chinese herbal medicine theories. If we use them properly according to oriental medicine method, it will be effective on treating and preventing the constipation.
